I had to update my Capture NX2 to version 2.2.8 (please double-check, I am at work now so can't confirm) before it would let me open the D7000 NEF files. LR may have to be updated too, but I don't have much experience with LR.
Herb considering that you have absolutely no idea of the timing of the delivery of my D7000 and underwater housing I think you should keep your comments to yourself.
A quick google search for "lightroom 2 d7000" would have revealed the incompatibility before delivery or even purchase. Hopefully the situation doesn't result in any lost images, but I think the point of the comments is just that it's always a good idea to take some steps to minimize any issues, especially when away from home base, double especially if you're not going to be able to run the workflow through its paces yourself.
then you were even more sloppy than i thought. this is how Lightroom camera support has always worked.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. Updated to LR3 and C NX2 latest version and all is well. I appreciate the helpful comments even the thoughtless ones...

Herbs thoughts weren't thoughtless. Obviously you must have gotten the camera at the last minute, but even so, to shoot a few frames and to check them out at home before hand is simply prudent and smart.
So perhaps this can be a lesson to others, to be sure and do at least a quick dry run test of equipment before going off on a shoot with it. You were fortunate that simply an upgrade to LR and NX2 solved your issue. What if there was a physical defect that the camera couldn't write to the card properly.
I have seen lot's of rude comments in here from time to time, and I don't know Herb at all, but I know he wasn't overly rude. But I do think you snapped back at him in your previous comment...
