p.82 #1 · which lens has the most 3D POP?

Okay challenge accepted. I will take a few of my most poppy lenses and a few of my flat lenses. Then I will photography the perfect subject for this 3D pop comparison with great dimensionality and restricted mobility: poop. Stay tuned. I can't wait for you guys to look at my poop pictures and discuss if some pop more than others or deny the existence of pop.

I’m going to ignore the “poop” thing (as soon as I stop chuckling) and offer a modestly serious response. (Best 3D Poop Pop?)

IF anyone actually wants to attempt such a test, note that it isn’t about testing some mediocre or poor lens against a very good lens — it is about testing two good lenses where one is claimed to be this thread’s “best lens for POP” and the other is an excellent lens thought by some to have less “perfect pop,” whatever that means.

Understood.

Just to be clear ... I'm not advocating that these components of the entire "3D" realm are the constituents of good photography. Simply that when / where the topic is regarding the influencing factors associated with Trompe' Loeil of a depth perception cues in a 2D medium to emulate a "3D" physiological response ... there are a variety of aspects that go into play with how people perceive depth. The topic was of significant interest to me and my studies were long, deep and wide (back when).

From that, if others DO HAVE an interest in those things, I gladly contribute

Suggesting people they better leave a conversation isn't good manners in my vocabulary. I believe that good manners imply listening to everyone, even when their contributions to a conversation can be judged unimportant.

Cybercomms can be a tough gig sometimes. Apparently, I didn't do a good job of conveying my agreement with you. Sorry for that.

No problem!
By the way, I have seen a photo posted by Ross Martin today that, to my eye, looks like 3D-popping. I belive this was taken with the Tamron 50-400mm zoom:

For me still the best 35mm Summilux. Can’t say why but its look and sharpness for me is better than with both FLE versions.

Makes sense to me. I mean, a given design that is optimized for its goals of (2 meters, for instance), then revised to allow for better mfd performance, is going to make some form of quid pro quo (assuming previous optimization) to the optical design. The differences may not be well discerned by everyone, but for those with a discriminatingly nuanced eye, I can understand why you might feel that way.

Vignette was not added. It does that wide open - until I think 5.6?

I honestly can’t say what exactly it is that I like so much about the output of the first Summilux ASPH (11874). With any other lens, I’d probably describe the bokeh as too nervous, but with this 35 mm I don’t even notice it in a negative way. The lens somehow creates an incredibly harmonious sense of depth and three-dimensionality — I still haven’t figured out why.

What I find curious is that it’s often traded for almost the same price as the first FLE (11663).

I remember that Mardi Gras street portrait. It made me happy then and now again following the link and revisiting it without knowing what I would run into.

A lot of pop there.

For me, the most "poppy" lenses are (I've used) : Loxia 35, Loxia 50 and the Sony 1.8/55.
