The gods of summer have, for whatever reason, smiled upon me and I will soon be in possession of a Sinaron Digital HR 35/4 (rebranded Rodenstock Digaron-S HR). It's in a Sinar digital board, so I'll have to rehome it to a different aperture housing and it will require the ACB-310 wide angle bellows to use it on the Actus, but, if the 60 HR is any indication, it will be well worth it.

Yeah, you can count on the standard bellows adding 10-12mm to the camera's flange distance, so lens with a rear-of-lens to image-plane distance of 30mm or greater will clear with no problems. The 50 makes it easily and I doubt you'll have any issues with the 40 as far as the flange. The 50 has roughly a 60mm IC that's good to the edges by f/5.6, so there's some room to shift there. No idea about the 40, but it wouldn't surprise me if the IC isn't much bigger than 42mm. The general rule of thumb is that Rodenstock is conservative when they list IC's, where Schneider tends toward optimism....Show more →
Hi Brad,
Thank you. I still remember many people in the past for large format indicating that they thought that Schneider was conservative in their estimates for IC. Maybe they are not as conservative as Rodenstock. I believe that I saw somewhere on line that Schneider indicated an IC of 43.2mm for the 40mm lens at f11. Hopefully that is a coservative rather than an optimistic estimate. But, if 43mm is correct for the 40mm lens, unless I am mistaken that for using the lens in a portrait orientation that would allow for 19mm of shift total (43mm - 24mm) (only 7mm of total shift for landscape mode - 43mm- 36mm) which would result in the possibility for stitching 3 images in portrait orientation of 9.5mm left and 9.5mm of right shiift. Potentially there could be more, but I will need to take delivery of the lens.
Unfortunately there was an incompatability with my Leica R 28mm f2.8 Super Angulon PC lens and the Cambo Actus Leica R lens adapter. The lens had too large a diameter and I had to resort to using a flat blade screw driver to remove the lens from the lens board mount. The lens and the damaged lens board adapter were just delivered at Capture Integration and they will be shipped off to Cambo to repair the lens adapter and make modifications to the board hopefully so that the lens can be used and mounted and removed from the adapter without issue. Capture Integration is preparing the Cambo Actus Leica R lens board and my Leica R 28mm f2.8 Super Angulon PC for shipment to Cambo in the Netherlands later today. They are going to hopefully be able to get the work done before Cambo breaks for 2 weeks for their Summer Vacation. I will report back once I have everything back in hand.
Also, at present the 2 Actus 39mm lens boards were postponed for delivery to Capture Integration for today rather than this past Wednesday. Hopefully they will be shipped to me today. I placed an order for a 3rd 39mm thread Actus lens board today for the 40mm Apo Componon HM. So right now, my Actus is a paper weight since I have the Actus and no lens boards to use any lenses. Will have to wait for the delivery of the first 2 39mm Actus lens boards till sometime next week.

Hate to disappoint you, Rich, but the standard IC diameter for the 135 format can't be less than 42mm because the diagonal of the 135 format is 42mm, so even in portrait orientation, your corners will still be right at the edge of the 40's IC (assuming 43mm is correct). You won't end up with more than a mm to shift in any direction without hitting the end of the IC in at least two corners.
That's too bad about the SA PC. If they can't make it work, there's always the Digitar 28 L (non-ASPH). Same optics in a Copal shutter. Although, these days it would be cheaper to find an SA PC used, remove the lens from the bellows, and figure out a way to remount it on a different board.

Thanks. I wasn't sure if had gotten that correct for the shift as I used to alway look at the info provided by Rodenstock and Schneider and to follow their guidelines for shift depending upon the IC. We know that the lens covers the FF format for printing since it is designed to print FF. I hope that the lens will have a much larger IC but I will need to wait for the lens. At the very least, I hope that it will provide sufficient coverage for tilt. Hopefully some shift would be nice for such a tiny and light lens.
As to the Leica R 28mm f2.8 Super Angulon PC, hopefully we will be able to get the board modifed (bringing the ring down and flattening somewhat so that the lens release can be accessed. I have small hands which will be an aid. But, I believe that the SA-PC is supposed to perform better than the Digitar 28L due to the ability to take advantage of the lens helicoid for postioning of the lens elements and in particular the lenses floating element.

I'll be curious to see what you find out. If it doesn't do much for you on the Actus, you can always mount it in a short M42 helicoid and use it on the a7r that way. That's pretty much how I use all my enlarging lenses now. I strongly recommend the use of hoods and UV filters, though. Those lenses weren't meant to see any time outside.
I didn't realize the SA PC had a floating element, but that's all the more reason to look at a used copy to remount, only if Cambo can't make yours work. It's what I'm doing with the Samyang 24 and, once I'm done, I'll have the floating element intact. I'm not sure how much close focusing I'll be doing with the lens, but it's there if I need it.

Hi Brad,
I didn't realize that you were using your enlarger lenses primarily in a helicoid at this point. I would like to use them in the field since they are supposed to be such sharp and fine performers. I have B +W UV filters for each of the 3 Apo Rodagon N lenses and will get one for the Schneider 40mm f2.8 Apo Compon HM lens. I found some images on-line with the Schneider 40mm used outdoors with the Helicoid. It had quite impressive performance I believe on an A7r. I am trying to figure out if I can somehow use a Lee or some other Compendium Shade to cover the 4 Enlarger lenses and to act as a lens shade. I will have to see what I can dream up or come up with. At least I could use collapsible lens hoods which may be the better part of Valor and I can borrow the Heliopan Collapsible lens hood to start and when needed from my Minolta CLE MC 40mm M-Rokkor lens, but I would still consider protecting the lens housings from the sun.
As to the Leica R 28mm f2.8 PC you may wish to look at this link:
My 28mm PC lens was I believe my first purchase on the Buy sell FM forum. I got mine for a very good price and have been pleased with it on my M4/3 Lumix G1 in the past. I believe it should hold up to my A7r cameras stopped down to f8 and for greatest corners and 11mm of shift at at f11. Stopped down the lens is supposed to be close in performance to my Leica R 28mm f2.8 Elmarit V2.

I think you might be overthinking the need there. I haven't had any problem with light leaks from the housing themselves, but they all flare pretty easily. I think you'll be okay with just hoods and UV filters. I use the cheap Chinese screw-in hoods, but a collapsable will work fine.
The helicoids available aren't the highest quality and you'll want to be careful to wipe down the inside before use to remove the loose coating (so it doesn't end up on your sensor). You'll also want some good flocking tape and a few other parts. Here's what the APO-N 50 looks like...

I wasn't suggesting to cover the Apo Enlarger lenses due to light leaks, but rather to protect the plastic housings from the UV rays which may tend degrade the plastic. As you say, these lenses were designed for usage in a dark room and not out of doors.
I will watch out of the flaring with the lenses, but the lens hoods should help a lot. Have to monitor the postion of the front of the lens and any light sources and/or reflections.

Ah. That I hadn't given much thought, but the housings are pretty cheap and easy to replace. You could get an umbrella arm for your tripod. Then your whole camera would be protected. Just be sure the pod's counterweighted before the umbrella goes on or off.
Have you had any problems with shutter shock using the a7r on the Actus?

Hi Brad,
I will do my best to limit the amount of time that the Enlarger lenses are in direct sunlight and if it gets to be an issue, I may try to drape something (maybe a t shirt) over part of the bellows and the Enlarger lens housings.
I have no lens adapters available for my Actus as my Actus Leica R lens Adapter and my Leica R 28mm f2.8 Super Angulon PC are on their way back to Cambo in the Netherlands as we speak and I am still awaiting the delivery of my first 2 Actus 39mm lens boards. I now have 3 on order and with the update 2 were supposed to be deliverd at Capture Integration this past Friday. I don't know if the boards were delivered and/or shipped to me. They have yet to charge my credit card for the third board. So, at this point, my Actus is a Paper Weight and I have only been able to mount one of my 2 cameras to the lens mount and that is it.
As to the question of the shutter shock, I will have to wait unitl I have lens boards and test different shutter speeds and different focal lengths. If I find a problem I will try different ways to combat the issue.

The Schneider Kreuznach 40mm Apo Componon HM lens arrived. It is absolutely tiny and extremely light and brand new. Unforutnately at this point I am still waiting for the delivery of the Actus 39mm lens boards. So, all I could do at this point would be to mount it on my Leia R bellows to check that it will focus close up.
I will need to receive the Actus Boards to test the lens and to try to ascertain the Image Circle and its capablities for tilt and swing and to confirm focus to infinity.
With the design of the lens though the Lever on the lens precludes the usage of step-up rings and/or lens hoods. I gave a call to Schneider on Long Island and posed the question if removing the lever would cause a problem or a light leak and if I removed the lever would I need to put the screw back in place. They told me that many people use their enlarger lenses as taking lenses. But, would you believe that they could or would not tell me if removing the lever would cause a problem, result in a light leak, or I would need to replace the screw into the lens housing. The rep indicated that this was considered a modification to the lens and that I should call SK Grimes.
Anyway, I called SK Grimes and they indicated that Schneider had made changes back and forth on the design of the lenses over years and it would depend on the age of the lens. They suspected that there should be no issue, but suggested that if I had the capabilities to check to see if there would be any light leak if I removed the lever. If there was a light leak, then to try replacing the screw and if there was still and issue to call and to ship the lens off to them.
Before I get too far on doing things so that I can add step-up rings for filters and to add a lens hood I want to run some tests to find out the ability of the lens for rise/fall and shift and for tilts and swings. I will test the Image Circle and test the ability for tilting the lens. Over the years for many applications I have used tilt for DOF more than shift. So even if the lens would not afford any or much capabilty for shift and rise, if I can use the lens for tilt for near far that may be OK.

A gentle suggestion that ongoing discussion re these Schneider lenses etc may now be better continued via private messaging, returning this thread to its original brief reporting format.
I've enjoyed reading the detail, it's just a suggestion!

David's right. We should probably move this conversation at least to the Schneider/Rodenstock thread. But I will tell you that I removed the arm of the APO-Componon-HM 90/4.5 with no ill effects.

Not so long ago, I posted that my most recent alt gear purchase was the CV 35/1.7 Aspherical VM for use on an A7ii. After figuring out how to get the best results from that lens, I came to like it so much that I bought its sibling, the Nokton 50/1.5 Aspherical. It is a spectacular lens that I would place on the level of the Loxia 50/2, if not slightly higher. The rendering is different, with the Loxia having more punch, but the Nokton can easily be made punchier in PP. Some users say that the Nokton is stiff competition for the Leica 50 Summilux, but I cannot judge, as I have no personal experience with that lens.

I just took delivery of a Voigtlander Nokton 58mm f/1.4 SL II, Nikon mount. I had wanted to wait until 2017 before buying more lenses, but this one was becoming quite rare on the market, and I was concerned it would be discontinued, as has recently happened with some other SLR-mount Voigtlanders in the past few years. I was late buying a 90mm f/3.5 SL II, and was lucky to find a like-new sample about a year after discontinuation.

I just purchased a Rodenstock APO-Sironar Digital 55mm f/4.5 on eBay. Hopefully it is in the condition that I want. I tried unsuccessfully 2 times to get the seller to confirm the condition and that everything was fine with the lens. I informed the seller that if the lens was not to my liking including the condtion, glass and coatings, and performance that I would return the lens.
The lens is to become part of my kit for my Cambo Actus and my A7r cameras. In the meantime to use the lens I have a Cambo Actus Copal 0 lens board coming. I will use the lens board which is scheduled for delivery tomorrow to test my old Rodenstock 75mm f6,8 Grandaon N MC and my old Rodenstock 90mm f6.8 Grandagon N MC lenses and to determine if either or both perform adequately enough to put into service for use with my Actus. These lenses like the Rodenstock APO-Sironar Digital 55mm f/4.5 will have tremendous Image Circles for using my A7r cameras on the Actus. I will have determine for myself if these relatively large and heavy lenses are something that I wish to carry into the field as well as how far and how often.
