It's not so bad until you see for yourself what their APO lenses can do.

Oh WOW, and I threw an offer at an OM 50 f/1.2 and it was accepted!
After looking at the OM images thread, I really wanted one, so there I go!! I am going to be eating catfood for the next month, but it will be worth it, right?
Good for you! I picked up an OM 50 f/1.2 a few month and I love it!

Thanks!
I managed to figure out where the squeaking in my new Nikkor NC 24/2.8 was coming from, the rear floating group.
Good as new. Now I can use it without worrying I might wear out something.

Last Friday I was checking out the local online Craigslist ads when I spotted a listing for an Olympus 24/2.8 lens for the amazing price of $20.
I contacted the owner who explained this was a wide lens he bought for his OM2 film camera that stopped working years ago. The lens had been his closet ever since and he wanted it gone. I rushed over there firmly believing that there must be some catch: the lens would be damaged or it would not be a real Zuiko. But this sample was everything I could of hoped for: it was in mint condition with its factory soft pouch and paperwork. He even pulled out the factory Olympus 24mm metal lens hood for this lens. This sample was one of the final versions with the newest multi-coating.
I own the Zuiko 28/2.8 but the 24/2.8 is reportedly to have better IQ. An absolute great find for $20. The focus action is way smoother than it is on my Canon EF 24/2.8. Like most of these Zuikos the 24 is very compact (as seen in the image next to a roll of film.)

Max, my research on Oly 24/2.8 serial numbers (previously posted) shows that this is a multi-coated version. Not only have you scored a peach, for the price of a peach pit; you've scored a MC peach! Well done.

Very nice. This was my very first Alt Lens, (see top of page) ... but I didn't pay $20 for either my first lens or my last one.
Received Leica R-EOS adapter today - my first Leica arrives on Friday.
I'll never forget the feeling I got with my first shot with the Oly 24/2.8 ... It was like I was seeing REAL COLORS for the very first time (compared to my non-Alt glass). "Stick a fork in me." I was toast.

Yeah, this "I got a super deal" crap is probably usually BS anyway. I've seen this in every segment of society. It feels good to get a great deal and/or to be recognized as someone who knows how to get great deals. No one ever stops to consider that in doing so the person just ripped off the other by jipping them out of the fair and going rate.
Even if it's not actually BS such "deals" are incredibly rare and all a person is doing by posting about it is contributing to the ruin of a marketplace which we (and they) the buyers&sellers of used glass, are responsible for. Many of the people reading these posts then feel like they should get the same and refuse or become reluctant to pay the going rate.
I used to kinda do the same thing by siting the difference between the Japanese and US going rates but I stopped when I realized there was a high potential for messing up the market place and/or causing someone to feel bad about paying the going rate.

Bifurcator...
I am not putting forth BS on this forum. And I am not looking for attention. I, like many of us, have been buying and selling lenses and other photo kit for years. The prices I have paid has been across the entire arc of great to bad.
With the work I do I can often quickly check the offerings on the local Craigslist section. I am never really looking for any one thing, just seeing if there is anything that catches my eye. After doing this for some time you see everything from good deals to insanely ridiculous asking prices. It can be downright amusing.
In this case this was a regular guy who was selling off several older film camera related items that he wanted out of his home. This was not some poor grieving widow I was taking advantage of. Buying and selling items via a system like eBay or Craigslist is all about matching the seller's asking price with buyers who are willing to pay that amount. This is a open market in a free market economy. The stage is set with the seller who offers his/her items for the cash amount he/she would like to receive. In this case this seller seemed happy to take my money with a handshake. I, naturally was thrilled with the deal. I did not "rip off" this person as you are accusing me of doing. Nor do I feel like I am contributing to "the ruin of the marketplace" by agreeing to this seller's asking price!
As such the only point I will agree with in your accusation/rant is that this occurrence was indeed incredibly rare. No one on this forum is going to sit and wait expecting to pay what I did. Deals like this are rare, but they can and do happen, no matter what the item being offered for sale is. Finding such opportunities can be instant dumb luck or a once in a decade event that comes with patient diligence.

There are great deal around, you just need to be lucky, and recognise them when they happen (that bit isn't luck).
Some one just (weeks ago) gave a way an Olympus 28/3.5 and an OM40, entirely for free. I offered to buy just the lens but that was more trouble than giving everything away so I missed out! The flawed logic there is that if I hadn't offered to pay I probably would have got the lot for free.

Makten - nice results with that P67II + 55mm. Gotta love 6x7.
Re: finding great deals: ultimately the deals are out there to be found. Luck is made, not found. So if you are searching all the time, you will find the deals. I recall reading from one guy on MFlenses I think, where he scored an OM 21/2, 50/1.2, and 85/2 on Craigslist for $50/ea. I found the ad that had them listed and he wasn't BS'ing.
I score deals of that magnitude sometimes, but it takes a lot of effort to track them down, and a leap of faith sometimes, plus of course the ready capital to pounce on them. Often bulk purchases of a package of gear net the best deals. However I usually don't post about them, just keep the info to myself.

You have no responsibility to defend a statement like yours. Many of us have gotten lucky with great deals on good gear. And so far as feeling like you have done someone an injustice by purchasing an item for exactly what the seller was asking in a free market, ridiculous. Enjoy your lens knowing that you paid what the seller asked. Now back to what we actually are here to discuss, photography!
