That's odd. What didn't work? Was the mount incompatible or the registration distance off?

When the lens was screwed on there was a gap ( approx 1/16") between it and the adapter. Also the top of the lens was 180 degrees out, facing the bottom. In any case the lens would not focus past about 15 feet. So I guess the lens should have been closer to the camera. I sent it back to B&H this morning.

Hmm. I can't explain the gap, but some M42 adapters, including my FDPro M42 , have the lens mounts held in by tension screws. That way you can loosen them and turn the mount until the distance scale is up.

The gap sounds like it might've been a bad copy on the adapter. It's an interesting lens, though. Well worth another try.

Question: do all screw mount M42 lenses have the same registration distance?

So far as I know, yes. It was supposed to be the "universal" mount.

It was probably an M42 lens with an aperture index tab at the base of the mount, in addition to the "stop down pin". This type of M42 lens needs a "rimless" adapter. Many M42 adapters have a flat rim at the base of the adapter that is designed to push in the aperture control pin on older M42 lenses, that have only this pin on them. This type of "rimmed" M42 adapter works fine with older pin-only lenses, because the flat base of the lens butt (into which the pin goes) sits flush with the inner face of the rim.

Newer M42 lenses with an aperture index tab in addition to the stop-down pin, won't screw all of the way down into a "rimmed" M42 adapter, because the aperture index lever tab hits the rim. This completely explains your comments about the lens not lining up correctly with the camera body and not achieving infinity focus.

Most of the newer M42 lenses that don't work with the rimmed adapters have a Manual/Auto switch; in Manual mode, the aperture stops down as you rotate the ring, and so you don't need a rimmed adapter to depress the stop-down pin.

I'll post some example photos later.

Also, there are many bellows and enlarger lenses with the M42 screw mount, and at least some of them (e.g. Schneider-K C-Curtagon 35/2.8) don't conform to the "universal" 45.5 mm registration distance that is shared by Pentax M42 (Takumar) and Pentax-K lens mounts.

I just double checked my Tak's that have the aperture index lever and square tab on my black Fotodiox M42 to EOS adapters, none of my lenses bind on the adapter, so your statement is not 100% accurate, though in this case it would be the most likely cause, to fix it, all that needs to be done is to enlarge the opening of the rim, a round/half round file should fix it fairly easily.

Here's some example photos, using a SMC Takumar 35/2 M42 on the left and a KMZ Industar-61 LZ 50/2.8 Macro on the right. The SMC Tak has an aperture stop-down pin (sticking up at the back of photo A), an aperture index tab (next to the rear element, above the "11" on the aperture ring), and a Man/Auto switch (immediately above the "11"). The KMZ Macro doesn't actually have an aperture pin (it's even older than that), but it serves the purpose. If it did have a pin, it would be in the same location as on the SMC Tak.

The second photo (B) shows the two types of adapters laying on the table, and the next two photos (C, D) show the adapters attached to the lenses. You can clearly see that the rimless adapter doesn't interfere with the aperture index tab on the SMC Tak.

OK, slight reset here. The SMC Tak aperture index tab does clear the rimmed adapter, but it still doesn't screw of the way down because of the little raised-square gizmo thingy at 10 o'clock on the mount base, opposite from the aperture index tab. This little gizmo probably engages a lever on the 'modern' M42 camera, to tell it what type of M42 lens is attached. In this particular case, the lens aligns about 90 deg off the EOS camera's "up", which is because the square gizmo thingy doesn't stick up as far as the aperture index tab. Anyway, I've had a lot of "tabbed" M42 lenses fetch up on the tab, but you're still doomed if you're using a rimmed adapter on one of the newer M42 lens variants. I guess the aperture index tab on the SMC Tak 35/2 is slimmer than on other lenses I've owned in the past that don't clear the rim.

You can find out more about Pentax M42 mount variants at AOHC,

http://www.aohc.it/testi.php?id_testi=40

That's where I just remembered that the "little raised-square gizmo thingy" is actually called the "diaphragm simulator coupling".

P.S. nothing is 100% accurate. I bet that most M42 lenses with the "gizmo" will not achieve infinity focus, even if the rim clears the aperture index tab.

Latest is a brass rapid rectilinear lens, 19th century, about 125mm, f8. Came with a little pouch containing four Waterhouse stops. Lens is tiny, about 1.25 inch long and 3/4 inch diameter. Just sent it off to SK Grimes to be mounted in Nikon F so I can use it on my D800E.

Note: Mine do not say V.2
Have you tried the Fotodiox rimmed adapter on your 35/2?

Can you show the ID ring on your KMZ Macro Please? thanks, I have only been able to find LZOS versions that look like yours (Industar 61)

Yes, as I described above after the "OK, slight reset here", The SMC Tak 35/2 tab does clear the rim, but the lens still does not screw down all of the way because of the diaphragm simulator coupling.

Sure. I'm basing my translation of the lens name on the auction that I bought it through. It was from the Ukraine.

Canon nFD 80-200mm f/4 L. Phillips pictures had a crazy impact on the prizes here in Germany. Therefore I had to wait for more than a year to find a reasonable offer.

Can't wait to test it against the Zeiss 80-200mm f/4 T* MM.

That is odd that all my S-M-C lenses with the diaphragm simulator coupling do seat fully on to the adapter.
I just tried my lenses on my Big_is M42 to NEX adapter, no issue either with it's aperture pin rim.
Do your lenses diaphragm simulator coupling nub stick out further than the Aperture pin when it's pushed in? mine don't

LZOS made your lens then, I was looking for a KMZ macro and couldn't find any.

The aperture pin on my SMC Tak 35/2 goes in 1 mm further than the height of the diaphragm simulator coupling. I just compared them using a caliper. I guess that explains why it won't mount flush with the camera with the rimmed adapter, but it will with the rimless adapter. This 35/2 is my last SMC Tak, and so I can't compare it with anything else. The mount is "vanilla". (i.e. not modified).

The top of the diaphragm simulator on my 4 or so lenses is about 5.5mm from the lens mount surface. (I may need to double check that)

This is my s-m-c tak 50/1.4 with rimmed adapter (to press the aperture pin)
However, I had to file away some of that rim, because it prevented me from turning the aperture ring.
The rim blocked the aperture indicator from moving and that somehow prevented me from setting the lens to manual mode.
