Confused-that last shot the Sigma looks weird compared to the Nikon.

i think the focus is off a bit on the nikon. have you tried lens calibration feature on your camera? some lenses can be off a bit.

His tests were not consistent. Looked to me like different cameras, angles, and distances. There was also moving while taking the shot. The video was entertaining.

From the images posted in this thread, the sigma looks sharper and a bit more saturated.

I think they both look soft. There must be a problem with how images are being resized or I am not wearing my glasses.

all of these samples are taken wide open unless noted, but looking at them they seem pretty sharp for wide open

i upload on flickr so it is resized from there

True. All of the wide open images from the Sigma here look sharper, but pause the last shots he takes on the video and look at the models defocused face and tell me that the 85D doesn't look more pleasing/natural than the Sigma.

Hey JR , are you having front/back focus issues? All 4 people portraits are OOF how could we tell sharpness here?

I expected the Sigma, with its newer coatings, to do better with flare and it sure seems to.

I would say conclusions can't be drawn on sharpness until the focus is corrected. flare, oof rendering, etc you can see the differences....but the focus is clearly off on the Nikon. As you say JR...how ironic

p.2 #17 · Battle of 85mm 1.4: Nikon AF-D vs Sigma

Thanks Ryan - i'll try to get the focus corrected and get some samples to show sharpness

so far, here are my thoughts...

AF = Sigma (quiet, faster & more accurate in low-light)
Bokeh = Nikon (slight edge in my eyes, but Sigma is surprisingly close)
Flare = Sigma (new coatings = no surprise)
Build = Draw (both are well built)
Sharpness = (TBD...)
Color = Draw (Sigma has more contrast/saturation and gives off a warm tone, so it depends on preference)

Conclusion: Which one is better? I would say they are pretty equal, and I would be happy keeping either one of them! I think if AF and silent AF is important for you then the slight edge would go to the Sigma. If the lens is used solely for posed/portrait work, then you can't go wrong with the Nikon D. Also, if you currently own the 85D, and are happy with it, then there is no point getting the Sigma instead. The 85G is another story...

from what i see, i prefer the Nikon bokeh but it's not as large a difference as my admittedly hurried shooting with the Sigma at PhotoPlus showed. i need to do real test with the Sigma. AF speed was hard to tell though it was definitely a lot quieter.

Herb...

HHmmm seems that the sigma has a bit more saturated color which is good. Maybe JR you can try to Manual Focus both lenses to eliminate any front or back focusing.

sharpness test: taped a magazine subscription ad to a door, and set up the tripod and took pictures with both lenses at f/1.4, f/2.8, f/4, f/8 (taken in aperture mode)

here is a picture of the original distance (taken at minimum focus distance)
