p.21 #1 · Nikon 35mm 1.4

Went to a local camera store and they've got a few copies. I took some test shots on D700.

here is a 14-bit *uncompressed* * uncooked* raw file.

Bring it up in either Nikon's ViewNX or Capture NX2. You should be able to see the focus where the focus is locked. You can discover tons of EXIF data, including focus distance in the raw file.

Here is another test shot at wide open. 14-bit *uncompressed* *Uncooked* pure raw file.

This lens is actually pretty soft at f/1.4 actually. Me and a friend that owns a 5dmk2 with a canon 35mm f/1.4 did a couple of comparison shots and it blew mine outta the water. Made me think mine was a bad copy, but after going online and looking at other full resolution f/1.4 shots with the nikon 35mm, mine were pretty similar to what I saw.

The new 24mm f/1.4 is much sharper wide open, but I find this focal length more usable so I won't be switching to 24.

I am waiting to see what the new 35 1.4 from Zeiss can do first before I make my purchase decision.

JR, you are an amazing photographer to say the least!

Has anyone that owns the 24 and the 35 decided on which lens they like Better? I'm having a hard time deciding. I also already own the 85 1.4D.

i owned the 24 1.4 it was too wide for me - the 35 1.4 seems like a perfect lens I can use all day for anything. But its so expensive for just f/1.4

I have both and I am stll not sure which I prefer. Frankly they are different lenses altogether. When I need to decide which to use it's usually about focal length more than anything else. In that regard I choose the 35 a lot more these days as it's just a more general purpose focal length. Nothing says you have to shoot wide open necessarily either.

The 24 is sharper wide open. Focus is faster on the 24 also.

I have yet to see a sample image that would make me want to part with $1800 to buy this lens. They all look soft to me, the DOF is just small there's no sense of sharpness. I'll stick with my 24-70 f/2.8.

I thought it was my monitor or something, but I agree, no offense, but the lens looks like it has great micro contrast as usual with recent Nikon releases, but they do look quite soft to me.
