For some reason, I thought we had heard U.S. availability being February with a street price of $999. Perhaps the price is going up given it's popularity!

This is what I remember as well, it's possible the source got the price in one currency then simply converted it to USD, and typically that's not how the actual price ends up. I'm holding out hope for it to hit the streets at under $1,000.

Wouldn't that be a Leica M9? I know, there is a very big price differential; but, if that is what you want ...
One more thing; the M9 isn't all that small. I'd personally prefer an EVF if it was good enough, because framing with a rangefinder isn't too great if you like precise compositions.
Those of you who think the X100 looks like a "Leica ripoff", don't you understand that the only thing they have in common is the placement of the viewfinder, and that it is the most convenient place to have it?
After seeing it in someone's hands I'm significantly less excited about this camera. It's basically the same size as my full frame M9 with a 35mm Summicron mounted. Although it is likely to be a LARGE order of magnitude cheaper, but offers nothing (ok, maybe 720p video) to those who are proficient at rangefinder focusing and already have an M8/9.
ticks many boxes for me, if not for the hideous focus by wire thing. I have no idea why manufacturers do this criminal thing to their cameras, I would've thought a simple manual focusing ring would be cheaper anyway?
Because they get nervous that people who have only ever used an AF SLR will get confused/annoyed/intimidated by the extra markings on the lens, and heaven forbid it be entirely manual focus!
I'm sure the D90 was taller than that in comparison to the M9... hmm maybe just imagining.

agreed, this is why i've never been too excited about the x100. is it at least a bit thinner body-wise than the m9?

my point was not why get this when for only $9000 more you could get the m9 and lens (though if you already own the m9 it's a valid point). my point was that the x100 isn't particularly small. it is roughly m9 sized and leica m cameras didn't used to be considered that small (though the lenses were), there are a number of film slrs that are smaller than the m9 (or the film m from the same time period). it is only recently that camera bloat has made the leica m seem particularly small. i think the x100 is a welcome step in the right direction but is too big for me to get as a compact carry around camera and i think it would be much more attractive if they could have whittled it down a bit.
Although if you've seen the teardown of an M8 on the L-Camera-Forum you see that no space is wasted at all, they even have multi-tiered PCB's, and PCB's on right angles, all connected with flat cables, it's really quite elaborate. Add AF and the size benefits of an APS-C sensor become less and less. I'm still amazed they fit a 'full frame' sensor in the M9.

I have two 50mm lenses, one cost $250, the other $900. Just sayin.
