Raymond, glad to enjoyed the views. Here are a few more from London and then to the next stop. I should have used MF lenses more but when traveling with other folks, AF is just so much easier.

Do like me.
Just sold my D500 + grip and 24/3.5 PC-E and ordered Z6 + FTZ + 24-70
The waiting has started, I'll probably get it just before Christmas. Nbr. 2 on the list.

There was a good reason why I had all (almost) my MF-lenses chipped. I'm prepared for the Z.
D850 + 24-70E > 2000grams
Z6 + 24-70 < 1200 grams
I know it's not the same and the first combi is better, but for travel there would be little difference and I'll keep both for the time being.

Now I have to find a good home for my Nippon Kogaku Nikkors.

Chris - did you do all your chipping yourself or did you get someone to do it?

The chips work great on the Z, you can even shoot full Auto and P mode (not that I would ever do that )

One thing to note that with chipped lenses you have to set the lens to minimum aperture and control the aperture with the front command dial. You do not have the ability to set aperture control to the aperture ring on the lens like you can on DSLRs. Once the Z camera senses the CPU any aperture setting on the lens other than minimum will give you the fEE error. Just taking me a while to re-learn using the front command dial. The advantage is that you get correct aperture recorded in EXIF

Non-CPU lenses - control aperture on the lens, but does not transfer the actual setting to the EXIF data.

Also it appears the image stabilization efficiency when using non-CPU Nikkor lenses is tied to having the correct focal length entered into the non-CPU lens database in the camera. (I have not read this anywhere, but did notice it shooting yesterday). I had forgotten to change the non-CPU entry from 400mm to 50mm. Was testing to see how low I could go on the shutter speed and it did not look right. Set the non-CPU to 50mm and it was perfect again. Makes sense if you think about it. The stabilization would be different trying to settle a 400mm field of view vs a 50mm or wider field of view. Movement not as amplified with the wider focal length.

Edit: Page 298 of the manual. (who reads manuals )

I have a Danish vriend who did the chipping for me (his nickname is Dr. Lens. )
What kind of chips do you use? Probably dandelions. Mine are original Nikon contact blocks (got them via a Norwegian friend). On the Df you could configure the camera to use the aperture ring. On my D850 I have to use the front dial as well.

That is who I thought did yours. Remembering from the other Nikon Glass forum (BR). I am using the Dandelion yes, except on the 45mm P which is chipped from the factory. But with the dandelion I am limited to the lenses you can modify (physical space to put the chip). I tried to get in on one of the Nikon chip sales that BR had the other year, but was sold out before I could get in.

On your D850, if you go to Custom Settings Menu > f4 Customize command dials > Aperture setting - You can select between Sub-command dial control or Aperture ring control for aperture.

Hello - this is my first post - ver 2. By that I mean I first posted it on the general Nikon board and it was suggested I re-post here.

I have some older Nikkors from the 70s when I had a Nikkormat. They have been on the shelf for a very long time until I recently got a Df. I really enjoy using these on this camera and would like to add a few more MF lenses to my collection. Specifically, I was looking at a 28mm. I am trying to decide between the f2 and the 2.8. Bjorn Rorslett has the opinion than the 2.8 is sharper for close up, but the 2 is better at infinity. I have read some reviews/comparisons that I have found on various sites - but all of them quite old. There seems little consensus and it may be due to sample variation. My use would be mainly (but not solely) landscape where infinity focus and corner sharpness is important to me.

My question is threefold, as I do rather enjoy the non-AI lenses with the scalloped metal focus ring:

1) Sticking with the pre-AI, pre-K, but still wanting some multi-coating, is there a significant performance difference between the NC Auto variants of the f2 and f2.8?

2) Do you find this same difference (if there is one) in the AI/AIS versions?

3) Is there a significant performance difference between the NC Auto and the AI/AIS versions? [is newer always better?]

Thank you ahead of time for your considered opinions/knowledge!

Yep, the contact blocks are not longer available.
When we met last September for Photokina I got the last one for my 50-135 and Dr. Lens put it in.
I still have 2 lenses to chip (25-50 and 200), but it’s not likely I can get those blocks (or for an outrageous price).

I only have a dandelion in the 55/1.2 and that was a hell of a job (he had a couple dying on the job ) a real contact block didn’t fit.

Hi and welcome to the thread!

Others will chime in I am sure (weekend traffic on the thread picks up vs during the week).

I am not a pixel peeper per se and I have not really seen any significant difference between the f/2.8 and f/2. I have owned both and used them on the Df. I recently sold the f/2.8 to a fellow forum member and he uses it with stellar results on a Fuji X-T2. I did not use them on the higher megapixel D8xx cameras where differences may be seen. I do like the little extra light gathering of the f/2. Mine sample is great for landscape shooting.

Since both of mine were of the AIS versions I can't give you any information on how they perform against other versions.

One thing to consider when buying a non-Ai version lens (and they are wonderful looking and top construction) is you will be limited to using them only on the Df unless you have the aperture ring modified. Since the Df is the only DSLR from Nikon that has the flip up meter coupling lever. Of course you can use them adapted on other bodies like Fuji, Sony, etc. And the new Nikon Z cameras with FTZ adapter. But not like you can natively on the Df.

There are two camps regarding modifying (cutting) the aperture ring... One being you never "mutilate" a fine lens like a scalloped non-AI and the other being, make it work as a tool for photography. . But that is just something to consider for future use of non_Ai lenses.

Regarding coatings... I have a 24mm in AIS and one NC Auto. In my shooting I see no difference. May be sample specific or my shooting style, but nothing jumps out at me.

If you find any of them in excellent condition get one, shoot with it and see if it works for you. Most of the time you can always sell for what you paid (depending on where you got it).

As our founder of the thread says, Kit Building is Forever

Welcome to the thread GT

I have owned a few different 28's, currently a 28/2 ais that was recently acquired. Only one that didn't impress me much was the NKJ 28/2 NC but it may have been my false expectations as I had owned f2.8s before that. I was on the fence and only got the f2 recently over the f2.8 because it was a good deal and only slightly more expensive.

Rafael or Jose are more knowledgeable and I'm sure will comment in time. Jose has done back to back tests on performance at infinity of various lenses from his balcony in Brazil, just not sure if he has done one with the various 28s and Rafael probably owns every type of 28 in museum condition

Incidentally, I recently bought another XT1 (as I may have mentioned ) off ebay from a guy in Perth, WA. He was doing free Standard postage (as opposed to Express which takes 2 or 3 days).
It's ok I thought, I'm in no rush, but after reading more and more about the Z6 I was keen for some mirrorless action so was keeping a keen eye on the online tracking.

Posted on the 19th, it made it as far as Sydney by the 28th, before being sent back to Perth !!!

I queried it with the seller and he contacted Aus Post and they're "looking into it", say it may have been a problem with the barcode or the address (the one on ebay that has seen thousands of parcels successfully sent to me over the last 10 years).

No timeline given as to how long it will take them to investigate. They haven't lost the camera, it's back in Perth, just send it to me Express !

Rant over ! On a more positive note, my 85/1.4 has been put back together and tested and is on the way back from Melbourne. That'll be A$530 please sir.

In the meantime, here's an orchid with the 180ED on the X-T1 just to keep things moving.

George,

Thanks for the info. Did you modify or file the mounting point to mount it on the Z. I went to a local shop and was able to mount the lens on a Nikon D3500 but not on the FTZ adapter. Wondering if you did some filing to mount it. Thanks once again.

That is interesting. I have not modified mine. If something was done to it in the past you sure cannot tell by looking at it.

Here is a quick snap with mine attached. Sorry for the poor lighting. Just a quick grab to show you.

Thanks for the photo. Possible to post a picture of the lens itself without mounting on the adapter especially the area below the prongs. Thanks a lot. Your efforts highly appreciated.

Venkat,

Here you go. Other than the tick marks above the aperture numbers the ring looks just like my other 5cm f/2 (not a Tick Mark lens).

George:

Yes, the 24 was the other one I was looking at. I have a 24 f2 AIS. This was the first non-budget lens I bought. While shooting the cheaper, slower lenses when I couldn't afford better, I always heard to go as fast as you could afford - hence f2. There wasn't the internet back then (very early 90s). Now with all that is out there, come to find out the f2.8 is more highly regarded- harrumph! I am considering a 24 f2.8 NC Auto.
Thanks for your information - very helpful.

Doug I think both of those 24mm lenses are pretty lame with soft corners and vignetting!

Thanks again. Reason for troubling you is, I got two lens. The second one looks similar to yours which is the one which mounts only on the D3500 and not the adapter. The first one looks like the 2nd picture of the ebay listing linked below which does not mount on any camera. So I am not sure what's going wrong.

Thanks
