And from the previous page I see Ben is checking in from time to time. He and Philippe need to go at it again to get some more acceleration in the thread.
Luka, cool black and white above!
Mawz, wonderful colors, including the sky. You may want to do a gentle cleaning of the sensor.
I probably only have 10 photos of birds and none of cats
but this guy landed right next to us and posed for a few minutes
Back when I had the 85/1.4 ai-s

Good reminder from Reagan (one of the best heron portraits I have seen!!) - something I need to get back into - birding. But of course it would help for the darned cold spell to leave us for the season.
Of course those birds up here are not as sociable, they definitely don't get close enough for Reagan's 85mm lens

By no means do these two shots qualify as "birding" pictures, but I was giving the focus of the Reflex-Nikkor 1000mm f/11 NKJ lens another try on the Df. The lens is showing promise. These were shot with the combo on a gimbal head tripod. Not locked down. I was just seeing how fast I could achieve focus before these guys went on their way.
I am sure I can get sharper images with a sturdy mount, mirror lock up or electronic shutter, etc. But I am liking what I see so far. Even with that donut bokeh coming out with the blue jay. Looking forward to getting shots of the nesting woodpeckers from their new hole in the last shot.

Reagan
That is an awesome shot Reagan! You should get a Df added back to your camera bag. Or a 5th round of the D700?
I considered buy a Df for the third time but I have a D810 that I hardly use
I did pick up a new XE2-s and I love it
First new camera that I have bought in years
400/3.5 ED-IF AIS for sale at the local pro shop - $800 - a good price or not?
I'll drop by the store Saturday morning to try to test it out, but it's kind of hard with a long tele w/o putting it on a tripod.
the 400/5.6 ED AI is great, but a faster 400mm would be great at times.

My beater 400mm f3.5 AI which produces damn sharp pictures costed me $600. Chips of glass missing in front element., banged and scratches on the body. I just ended up decorating it with some tape.
George, That's better than I ever got out of the press pool 1000mm f11 reflex lens. Other than being a b*#ch to focus - holding it still proved equally difficult. However, it is an engineering marvel. Virtually a compact telescope - Congrats!
