I appreciate the effort Fred, especially the fact you're keeping all the older posts from the thread. Interesting that posts with link to some hosts still display those photos within the archived thread, while other hosts yield only the URL to access the photos. I originally had photos hosted by Picasa which Google shutdown a few years after buying the company. They continued to allow old photos to be accessed, but my guess is when the change was made to archive these posts, it was enough of a change for Google to treat those links differently. Clearly, that is not your problem and I doubt anyone who wants to go back into this seven and a half year old thread will be concerned about pressing a link if they really want to see what I contributed.
The archive now seems to work just fine, though as I mentioned to you elsewhere, it would be nice for the toggle to move between current posts and archive to be available at the top of each page rather than buried in a single post near the beginning of the thread. I imagine that would add a bit of complexity to your task, but it would certainly make it easier for folks to understand what is happening. I think even our friend Reagan would be able to handle that arrangement.
But thanks for keeping us informed and for answering questions as they arise....Show more →
Thanks for the suggestion!
We could also add a toggle somewhere on the top of "split threads" to complement the link.
What happens with images hosted outside of FM is out of our control. Usually after many years images get removed or recycled by the server host.

While I understand the need to manage volume, and I can live with working round the "archive" shambles, i am not at all happy with a broken promise. Since March 2009 the only way I could post anything on this site has been as a paid up member and we are promised that our membership allows us to -
Manage and showcase all of your uploaded photos in a gallery of thumbnails. Just click on any image in your personal gallery to quickly access the post where the full image was originally uploaded.
Now all i have is a gallery from March 2017 - 13 pages of thumbnails. Sorry but this is not what I paid for.
I realise that MF Nikon Glass doesn't need my gripe but I'm sure I'm not the only person here that's been affected and for those who have been smart enough to use Flickr and other hosts, i apologise, but I want what I've been promised.

Member absolutely are not obligated to pay for any service in order to post images here at FM. All one needs to do is to paste the image's full URL link onto the message box.
Regarding Upload & Sell: This service allows members to upload images directly to FM and also get access to post gear for sale at the Buy and Sell boards. If you have any further questions, please let me know via PM and I will do my best to answer any of your concerns.
Peter, Bummer. I doublechecked in case you had a filter on, and yes, yours only go back to 2017. Mine go back to 2012

I think you're missing Peter's concern Fred. He may have been mistaken that he needed to have FM host his images but his complaint is that he no longer has access to all of his images, that only those from the last year remain in his Upload account, though he has been posting there for years. This is clearly outside my area of experience since although I've subscribed, I don't upload images. In fact, I don't sell anything on the Buy and Sell forum either. I subscribe to support your website. But I understand that Peter is disturbed because he no longer has access to images he uploaded to FM. I don't know what the source of the problem is or the solution but it is a real concern.

I sent a PM at 9:31 pm , an hour before this reply. So far no response. I understand the point made but having a gallery is one of the stated benefits of Upload and Sell which I was happy to pay for also to support the website which in virtually all other respects met my needs perfectly. Obviously I can work around this but really don't want to have to start again from scratch.
Another thought is what about the long run. Does Fred plan to periodically move posts into the "archive". I am still not sure that's the best implementation vs. having a short default view (let's say maybe just 100 pages max (and the same concept would apply to member images too), and then if you want to occasionally see the more complete picture you have to explicitly select that option.
I will stop quibbling though and just get on with it.
Hopefully things will settle out in a few days as all the bugs get worked out.
My Upload only goes back 12 months as well, however I do see my images from beyond 12 months in the archive posts. So they are in there somewhere. My Top 15 are older than 12 months and are still there.
One thing I did notice, that searches in the thread only go back 12 months as well. If you try to search the thread for something beyond 12 months even if you are in the archive thread provide no results or incomplete results. In the example below, I searched "Nikon 135mm". The results show 46 entries but only display 2. Notice it results in 2 pages, but are blank.
Like Samy. Moving on and posting pictures. But I am probably going to try another site for hosting the images.
Is Flickr pretty much the default?
Search made while in archive section of the thread

1) It's easy to use once you get the hang of it.
2) You can share links to albums you've created it. Here's one for example: https://flic.kr/s/aHsm1n6NN5
3) You can go back and re-edit an image, then all you have to do is copy and paste the BBCode over your old image inside the thread.
4) Some of us on here. chat back and forth about our images.
There are some more, but these are the ones I care most about.
If you switch and need any help. don't hesitate to PM me.

The way that the "Uploads" button works is to show recent updated images located in threads that were not archived. This is the first time someone requests archived images to be shown on that page.. This may require code changes since archived images are located in different database tables. Thanks for the feedback, I will work on this.
Best,
Fred
I'll second Leighton's comments regarding Flickr. I much preferred Picasa simply because once I'd identified a folder on my local computer as one I wanted replicated online, software provided by Picasa AUTOMATICALLY uploaded each photo I added to the folder as I processed images. Flickr is more work, but I'd developed a system that is manageable.
1) I create a folder on my desktop called Flickr Uploads into which I drop all of the photos I process. I will have created a series of folders on another drive into which I will eventually transfer the photos. Those folders will be mirrored on Flickr.
2) I upload photos to Flickr as the spirit moves me, assigning them to the appropriate folder.
3) I move already uploaded photos from the Flickr Upload folder and drop them in one or another local folder. An example is the 2018 Chin Visit album found in my Flickr account. My local folder has the same name and it resides in a dedicated drive.
4) I'm not much into chatting with folks on Flickr since this is practically the only place I post photos. I prefer to save my witticisms for my friends on FM...
5) Yes, it is very easy to access and share photos, at least sharing them on another website. Unfortunately, Flickr's notion of family and friends is limited to those who have signed up for Flickr, so each time I want to send links to albums or photos I have to enter the email addresses for my REAL family and friends. But I understand, they WANT to create community, to capture eyeballs to increase their ad revenues... the American way of doing business. Of course, I hope they are successful in the same way I want Fred to be successful. If Flickr goes away, it would be a world of hurt for those of us who link to hosted photos. If FM went away I'd have to take up a new hobby!
Clearly, the changes Fred is making, at least up to this point, has made the Upload option so narrowly useful that I wouldn't blame folks for dropping their subscription and moving on. I refer folks to albums created for my trip to Turkey in 2012 and to the Netherlands in 2010 from time to time. I can do that with Flickr, but under this new regime those photos would only be found on this website and only if I searched for them in the archive. That is simply unacceptable to me... but I don't use Upload so it isn't a problem... except for me friends.
You almost gave away your address - Are you on one of the streets crossing San Anselmo Ave? I can almost do street by street combing based on your yard flowers and find your house. That and the fact that you are near Sir Francis Drake High School, makes it easier to spy on you.
I'm not trying to hide Ram... you're welcome to visit any time you're in the Bay Area.
I posted this photo last summer of my car sitting in the driveway where I live. You can only see the corner of the roof of the cottage I live in at the rear of this property.
And this is what the inside of my cottage looked like when George's PC lens passed through my hands. You can see the lens case sitting on the tansu folks in the thread know quite well...

At the risk of boring everyone of my friends on this thread, the only reason this has arisen is because of the new archiving system. Before this happened I had about 56 pages of images.
However I've had a PM from Fred and I'll see what happens. 'Nuff said for now but I do tend to be like a dog with a bone......................
At one time we did discuss (look it up in the archive ) going our own way but decided, with Curtis' urging, to stick with FM. It was a good decision at the time and I hope all this can be resolved.
Kevin wanted to see my rangefinder glass so I took a quick shot of the RF family.
