I have a question for you guys, and it comes from playing with my new to me Df as well as my new to me 24mm 2.8.
Can Nikon MF lenses be trusted to just be put at infinity and be accurate when distance shooting? Is the infinity stop accurate on older Nikkors or does it vary lens by lens.

They vary depending on the factory and their history, try a star test to check.

The plane everyone goes to see, SAM 26000. 40 image stitch
Wow, 40 image stitch. Looks great, I imagine you can count the rivets if you wanted to. I like the position you got that from, with nothing in front of the plane. An the lack of people in front of the plane, though maybe that's part of the benefit of the 40 image stitch, pick and choose.
I see some typical barrel distortion from the stitching, does taking it all in with a superwide or defished fisheye look the same as the stitch?

If the lens is rectilinear it will make no difference, only final fov, the distortion in fisheye panos changes the game.
Naturally the above applies if taken from the same camera position!

I didn't attempt to shoot it with the fisheye in my bag, but I may go back and try it with a 50 or 85 and see if it does the same thing. Lack of people is that they were moving and they "disappear" with the shutter speeds I don't have anything wide enough from where I was shooting to get the whole plane in one shot

Star test? Does that mean just take pictures of stars and pixel peep?
Yes, or if you live somewhere that is always cloudy use the reflection of a christmas ornament, bumper, etc reflecting a light. I'd use the center of the field wide open, that lens can get nasty off axis.

Not really, this time. This laptop is just about six years old and it took about 20 minutes or so.
Thats, great! It took me about 20min to stitch 12 shots. But perhaps you dont shoot as many pixels as I do, 36MP? Itīs a ridiculous amount of pixels..Sometimes I consider buying the D700 again.
Also, do you apply a lens correction profile to each image before the stitching process?
Great image btw!

Went out tonight for a little roadtrip, found a new spot for once. I brought a lot of lenses. Ending up using only the 25-50mm and the 20/1.8 AF G. But I switched over to the 25-50 quite fast again. Itīs so much easier to use when itīs dark outside, and it has a focus infinity stop which helps out a lot when shooting in the dark. So tonight the 25-50/4.0 ais - 80īs-90īs made something lens won over the top modern extra-super-duper 20/1.8 Af.
Just love this lens. Shot @ 25mm f/11, 30s and iso 320:
Yup, D3 is also 12MP. It's still good for my needs, though I would LOVE to have an 850... but that's gonna be a long long way off yet.

Thanks Colin, this time I decided to use the 28. Can't afford to buy any more new gear, and may be selling off the Gigapan I picked up last year, but haven't devoted time to learning it. Next time, either the 85 or 105 from the same spot

Laura,
Isn't this the parallax effect exacerbated by a wide angle lens and close subject matter?
Dan touched on this a few months ago.
While I was at the museum, I brought both the 28 f/2 AI-s and the 28 f/2.8 Series E with me, and all of my 50mm lenses to test on a single subject in difficult lighting. The lighting overhead are fluorescent tubes and incandescent lights. Tripod used, shutter trigger employed.
50mm f/1.2 AI-S
50mm f/1.4 SC Auto
50mm f/1.4 AI-S
50mm f/1.8 Series E (black ring)
50mm f/1.8 Series E (chrome ring)
You'll find them labeled under each image as to the f stop and lens used.

I often shoot panos with the 24mm NC and find that applying lens correction before stitching helps.
Generally I process one central image in LR to my liking then 'sync' up all the others in the pano series.
At that point I merge them and hope for the best.

I missed reading this question, oops. No, no lens correction applied to these, before or after.
