Just acquired David Douglas Duncan's "This is War". Fantastic photo essay on the Korean War. Gives one an eerie feeling of what it would have been in the midst of it all. The photos are that real.
Have been skimming through the writeup and some of the photos so far. They were all done with the Leica IIIc, and Nikkors - 5cm f1.5, 8.5cm f2 and 13.5cm f3.5 (there's a page near the end describing the equipment used - film was Kodak XX). Taking all those photos in such circumstances is by itself quite incredible. I have the Leica IIIc - compared to the Nikon S2 or SP its viewfinder (which is different from its rangefinder) is miniscule. Focusing particularly with the 13.5cm is approximate at best. And loading those Barnack Leicas with film is an art by itself, even in the comfort of a kitchen counter, I can't imagine how it was on the front lines.
Thank you everyone for the likes and the comments.
Peter a friend in the neighborhood Safari's every year both to hunt and to shoot photo's which he does with a D7100. The hunted meat is butchered and given to the local tribes and is appreciated.
On a very sad note Marshall, owner of our local camera store is at home and under hospice care. My prayers and hopefully all yours will make his passing easier. His father is at 103 years old is very distraught, so are his children. He taught college and retired as a Physics professor, and for many years he loved photography. He often said he hoped his body went before his mind.
In honor of all things old I purchased a "working" Sekonic light meter, the L-VI. I paid $11.00 making my S2 investment $250.00 Now it's time for me to step into the "50's"
Hi everyone, back from a trip with no daily internet access, went to Puebla Mexico for a first communion and a family reunion, not my direct family, an adopted one.
Way behind on the thread, will catch up on my reading, just hope you are well. Congratulations Ken on the S2.
Always loved to visit the old towns, like Cholula, and take photos of the colonial buildings; a reminiscence of what I was born into, adobe, stone, ranches, horses, Catholicism.....
Sadly all historic buildings were closed and cordoned with some damage, top of bell towers and crosses fallen.
Thanks for all the likes of late. Much appreciated. Eclectic German mix coming up from the 24 NC.
Whilst in Berlin we managed a few hours in the “Museum fur Fotographie” which hosts the Helmut Newton Foundation. Normally photo exhibitions display only a handful of pictures but there were hundreds upon hundreds of Newton’s work and equipment. In the Nikon section I noticed a 50mm SC 1.4 and 85mm 1.8 H.
Absolutely no photography was allowed and I even had to check-in my camera bag. So the best I can present is a warped view of the building’s entrance. 24mm NC used. Well worth a visit if you are ever in the vicinity.
I've been very busy for the past few weeks with yet another course towards my master's degree. As a result, I've had to participate only as a stealth operative in this thread, through multiple daily clickings of the Like button. Even when burdened with much busy-ness, I just can't do without my daily dose of the excellent photography and enjoyable conversation that can always be found here.
Something very nice happened to me recently, when I went to E-Bay looking for a 5.8cm f/1.4 S, then found and bought one, only to discover that I had bought it from Ani! This is the second lens I've bought from her, after the 20 f/3.5 UD she sold me back in the spring of 2016; and it is just as satisfying a lens to use, with a truly buttery focusing action. I have yet to take it out for the full, immersive photographic experience, but here is a photo of it (with the Lens Turbo II focal reducer) on my X-T2, taken with the 135 f/3.5 QC on my trusty D800E. I think even the "Nikon camera--Nikon lens" purists out there will have to concede that this is a drop-dead gorgeous combination!
Df and 28 F4 PC, processed with Silver EFex Pro. The processing emphasized the grime that's accumulating on this well-used Df's shutter. May need to do some eclipse cleaning soon.
