Re: Manual Focus Nikon Glass

Just acquired David Douglas Duncan's "This is War". Fantastic photo essay on the Korean War. Gives one an eerie feeling of what it would have been in the midst of it all. The photos are that real.

Have been skimming through the writeup and some of the photos so far. They were all done with the Leica IIIc, and Nikkors - 5cm f1.5, 8.5cm f2 and 13.5cm f3.5 (there's a page near the end describing the equipment used - film was Kodak XX). Taking all those photos in such circumstances is by itself quite incredible. I have the Leica IIIc - compared to the Nikon S2 or SP its viewfinder (which is different from its rangefinder) is miniscule. Focusing particularly with the 13.5cm is approximate at best. And loading those Barnack Leicas is an art by itself, even in the comfort of a kitchen counter, I can't imagine how it was on the front lines.
