Thanks AL, whoever you are. I'll check that out, though I discovered there is an upgrade for Nikon NX Studio that solved whatever the problem may have been. It is fairly rudimentary software but it seems to be enough for me to process images I feel comfortable sharing with friends.

Speaking of which... here are six photos I took at the Marin Farmers' Market. They say in their advertising that they have 200 vendors participating... which certainly seemed to be the case today. We had real trouble finding parking when we arrived a bit before 9:30 a.m. But we got what my friend Sue needed. I'm generally the sherpa lugging bags and wheeling carts... which doesn't leave a great deal of room for the camera and taking photos. I got a few but clearly, this is something that deserves full attention. I shot all of these with the 55 f/1.2 S.C. with the Nikon AI conversion kit installed. I was thinking about you Leighton...

This was my first photo at the vendor where we do most of our shopping. There was a line of about twenty shoppers when we finally were ready to pay... but there were four checkers so it was pretty quick. And here is another from that same vendor...

55.1.2.SC.Celery by Curtis Grindahl, on Flickr

Celery is $2.75 per bunch and we bought seven. Sue juices celery most days.

55.1.2.SC.Peaches by Curtis Grindahl, on Flickr

Two peaches was a bit over four dollars... beautiful freestone peaches.

More peaches and nectarines but these aren't organic.

55.1.2.SC.Flowers by Curtis Grindahl, on Flickr

A great many vendors selling flowers. It's that time of the year.

55.1.2.SC.TripleTRanch by Curtis Grindahl, on Flickr

I share this in part because of the building behind the market. In fact, the market is held in the parking lot of this building... the Marin County Administrative Building... designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. I've shared photos of the building in the past. It is quite remarkably... but on Sundays its just the backdrop for this huge market.

I'm a cat fancier Jim and Oscar is precious. I'm also fond of black cats, having had one that was part of my life for a few years. I called him Black Cat... He'd been abandoned at an apartment complex my former wife and I moved into. He was dipping his paw in the swimming pool to get water as we spoke with the manager. She said he'd been using the pool and apartment dumpsters to sustain himself in the months since he was left. It took us two months to make friends and he eventually became part of our life.

Thanks for these lovely photos.

Ah yes, a reminder of the unofficial thread motto---and primary devilish philosophical principle---that "Kit Building is Forever!" The great thing about this principle is that it even holds true when people sell off some of their MFNG, inasmuch as this enables others to own those lenses and build kits of their own.

Here is another set of images from the classic car show in Coombs, all from the 24 f/2.8 NC.

I've concluded Glen that the cars at events like this that most strike our fancy tend to be the cars we loved when were were youths. My first car, bought in the early 1960's was a 55 Chevrolet Bel Aire. Most of my friends were into mid-fifties Chevys, 55, 56, 57. They still stir my juices. Of course, I eventually found the Corvette... my first being a 1956... then two different 1965's, one a roadster, the other a coupe. The 55, 56, 57 Thunderbirds were also special. Those were the days...

Thanks for sharing these.

And thanks for reminding me...

Where has the time gone?

13 years for this wonderful thread where so many fine people have come to visit and some have lingered. Curtis started this thread two days after Nikki (the wife, not the lens!) and I were married; I was a bit late to the party and didn't make my first post until Jan 16, 2011 (page 57!). I couldn't help but be inspired by all the pictures coming from these wonderful lenses! Folks (especially Curtis and Laura) raved about them and unlike the AF counterparts, I could afford some of these on my shoestring budgets (married college student).

Inspired, intrigued, egged on, whatever you'd like to call it, I carried out my fair share of kit building through those early years, buying a few lenses from folks here FM, some from this thread, and beyond. I don't have any of the originals anymore
- jhinkey's lovely 28/2 AI fell by the wayside due to a temporary dalliance with the 28/1.8 G AF-S
- AI versions gave way to AI-S versions for the shorter focus throw that I found useful for chasing fast moving children
- Experimenting with different focal lengths.
- My widest lenses were the 20/3.5 AI-S and 20/2.8 AI-S
- My longest was the 300/2.8 ED AI-S (still sad I missed that 500 f/4 AI-P that was on the board a few weeks back for $450 with a TC)
- At one point, Nikki (again, my wife, not the lens) suggested maybe this was getting out of hand because she couldn't remember how many lenses I had. At the time, I think I had: 20/3.5, 28/2.0, 35/1.4, 50/1.2, 105/2.5, 180/2.8, 200/4, 25-50 f/4, 50-135/3.5, and an 80-200/4.5 (AI). I ultimately agreed and started evaluating my most used focal lengths and whittling things back (she didn't realize at the time this would manifest in me picking up Leica M6TTL's or Pentax 67's on 2 occasions each when the prices were siren song low). Ultimately I'm glad that I passed many of the lesser used lenses along. I settled on 28/50/105 as my 3x main focal lengths and still find this is what I gravitate towards most.

I now have a 28/2 AI-S, a 28/2.8 AI-S, 50/1.2 AI-S, and 105/2.5 AI-S as well as a really cheap 50-135. I still regularly shoot them on my FE-2 or F3 and occasionally pull them out on my Z6. Even with a decade plus on the eyes now, I really prefer the viewfinder of the F3 for fast focusing of manual lenses although perhaps I'd pickup better on the Z6 if I gave it more practice.

My 105/2.5 still has the original dead fungus traces at the edge that were present when I bought it (knowingly, it was all I could afford at the time and I won't replace it) whereas my 50/1.2 has become a bit dustier, hazier, and looser over the years (it was always loose but has finally gotten a tad sloppy) and sadly picked up a few bits of fungus on an edge. I am not sure if I can bring myself to send it in for a CLA as it was always dusty and a bit hazy from the get go and I'm not sure I want the results that come out of it to change. Those two and my trusty FE2 have been with me for longer than my oldest child.

Enough about kit building. What's really great about this thread is all of the people. So many have come and gone, sometimes for a few posts, sometimes for weeks-years, some almost forever. It was so rare that we had issues with folks being sour about the original guidelines. Curtis' enthusiasm in getting the thread started and the kindness and warmth of everyone making this a happy little corner of the internet is pretty well unmatched in the history of the internet... or maybe it's the feeling of pleasure that comes over one from turning a smooth focusing ring! This group has been there for a lot of folks through hard times.

- Chris, keeping you in thoughts here for the prostate issues. Seems to be one of those things for aging with men.
- Leighton, I'm sorry to say I've still never made it all the way to your corner of the world. The closest we came was Tennessee (right along the edge of the Smokies at Maryville/Knoxville back in 2021 and another 6 or so hours away from you. I know for certain you have the more desirable locale of natural beauty!)
- Curtis, what a surprise it was to open this page a few days ago and see you back posting at such a historically normal rate! I'm saddened for the loss of your hikes at Mount Tam and the other surroundings. As a fellow lover of being outdoors, especially in such a lovely place, I can only imagine the pain of waning ability to do the same activities as when we were younger. I've watched this happen to my own father who is not too far behind you in years and it's been hard for him too. Hopefully there remain a few of the less grueling trails that remain well suited for your current ability. Although I don't get to post a lot of pictures right now (the work schedule remains busy and my 24-120 S is usually glued to the front of the Z6, I've enjoyed greatly seeing you back and seeing your pictures (both old and new).

Oh and by the way, if I ever grab one of those 500 f/4's, just remember that it was probably the devil (or Laura) that made me do it!

If any of you ever has a 500/4 that you don't want to tote around anymore, just keep me in mind at some point! It's definitely not as practical as carrying a 400/4.5 or 100-400, but certainly lighter on the wallet and still a fine lens.

Right now, my longest lens on the Z system is a 24-120 S. I used an E-Mount Tamron 70-180 (the one Nikon recently rehoused and released) but decided to sell it before the Nikon version came out. I am on hold for splurging on the Nikon version while it's at full price (it's a lovely lens and about the same size of the classic ED AIS 180mm) but I promised Nikki I wasn't going to go crazy with modern AF lenses for that kit. The Z lenses I've used are great, make no bones about it, but I try not to throw thousands upon thousands at lenses when I have my crew to feed and I like to save and space those purchases out on a longer time scale. MFNG was always more up my alley price wise for trying lenses! The long lenses get expensive fast, just a 70-180 and 100-400 quickly get close to $3000 and don't even get me started on that lovely 400/4.5S that is so compact for a family of folks who love to birdwatch on our hikes and drives.

Meanwhile, our pair of Oregon Opticron binoculars were about $200 and my main stable of 28/2, 50/1.2, and 105/2.5 were only about $800 combined back when I originally bought each. I think the craziest thing to remember is when I bought all of those, the only fast, modern 28mm or 50mm lens available from Nikon was the 50/1.4 G AF-S and I never felt that it delivered anything much better than what my old 50/1.2 was capable of. Nikon has really stepped their game up (as have most manufacturers) in this past 10 years for optics, but nothing beats the feel of a manual focus ring.

Speaking more of the people, nearly all of my children have largely grown up in front of the 28/2 and 50/1.2 (with some appearances by the 28/2.8, 105/2.5, and others) and many have taken a liking to these fine lenses. It's fun watching them smile as the matte and split prisms snap into focus on film bodies (without the film, that's too expensive these days) and they're mostly well hooked. I think in another 1-2 years when Z8's drop in price quite a bit on the used market, I'll pick one up and the Z6 will become a camera well suited for tween/teenage sized hands. You can bet there will be a 28/2.8, 50/1.2 or 105/2.5 out front. Fortunately, if any really continues to love MFNG, adding a used DSLR or Z5/Z6, FTZii and a lens will still be a song for a fun lifelong hobby.

It's just always hard to beat a 50/1.2 AI-S with Tri-X. Several years ago now, still a classic and I'm pretty sure Carhartt should pay me royalties for this picture. This was either f/2 or f/2.8. It's always been silly just how sharp that lens was by f/2.
