Did some reading on the 85 f1.4 AIS definitely gets really good reviews and average it's about $500 on eBay for a decent copy of it.
I was reading Ken Rockwell's review on it says it's one of Nikon's 10 best lenses they've ever made but then he throws in the 85 f 1.4 and the 85 f 1.8 the auto focus lenses he says the 1.8 is sharper than the AIS.
But I guess the AIS has just got creamy dreamy out of focus area.
There are a lot of good 85 mm lenses and I actually been struggling do I just want to get an auto focus lens and flip the switch to manual focus and have auto focus available too or do I want to get strictly manual focus.
I think my choices are the 85 f1.4 AIS or the Tamron SP 85 1.8.
I think after reading the reviews and the advice you guys have given looking around I'm going to go with the 85 f1.4 AIS. Trying to find a real good copy on eBay seems like most of the listings 90% of them are in Japan.
Sorting through my fly fishing (tenkara) gear. Taking inventory so I will be ready to hit the water soon. Threw some stuff on the table and here it is. Not much but kept me busy today.
Rod, line, flies, hatchet because it was out And some ITO yard that I use for dubbing on some flies.
Behind the scene (or over the scene I guess) shot with the Zfc/Lens Turbo II/ 20mm/3.5 Ais
In the Beginning... (you need to play some music during these photoshoots)
[Partial Lyrics]
"There you go man, keep as cool as you can.
Face piles
And piles
Of trials
With smiles.
It riles them to believe
That you perceive
The web they weave
And keep on thinking free".

My head felt like it was On the Threshold of a Dream
I had to look that one up. Early Moody Blues. Before I started being familiar with them

Mike, buying from Japan is easy and sellers are very ethical. Be sure to read the description as something is lost in translation of condition, and they may call a lens with fungus "mint" because it looks that way on the outside. Their descriptions are very accurate though, and the product photos excellent.
High ticket items from Japan may get stuck in customs until duty is paid and cleared, duty is only 2 or 3%. A $500lens should sail right through
I just ordered the camera below from a Japanese seller, it has a small dent at the flash mount but is claimed to work perfectly. The seller called these cosmetics "only tiny scuffs" which is not accurate in English but the photo tells the true story. .The price was excellent. Keeping my fingers crossed.
I don't take KR seriously. The Japan listings on eBay are usually the best sources and best descriptive of what they are selling. I got a beautiful copy of the HC Auto 1.8 from Japan, so have a spare copy. The spare is not the best looking copy, but it takes beautiful images too.

I'll jump in with Scott and post one using the Zfc and Lens Turbo II. This with the Nikkor 50mm f/1.8 Ais adapted.
After avoiding it for 3 years, Covid jumped up and bit me in the ass
Now isolated in my home office above the garage in the hope my wife does not get it. So tossing darts today waiting for fever to go. May break out the fly fishing gear tomorrow. Standby for boring pictures while I wait it out.

George, wish you a super speedy recovery.
I had the virus last January and the isolation was the worse part of it for me.

I ordered from Japan on eBay before for a Bronica GS-1 film camera and all went well. I guess I'm surprised that 99% of those lenses come from Japan, not many listings here in the USA. You get $40 shipping and then 2 weeks of wait is kinda a bummer.
Really depends on the shipping. I have ordered quite a bit from Japan and it is most of the time very quick. I have actually ordered something from KEH here in the US and from Japan on the same day. The eBay order from Japan got here quicker. I have never had anything hung in customs and have had orders up to $1000.

Went down by the river a couple days ago for an IR fix with the Nikkor-P.C 55mm f3.5 ai'd micro
9 image stitch of an island
10 image stitch of a swampy area
Far left edge in the distance I dropped the cup shaped lens cap to my Rokinon 14mm f2.8. It bounced
off the 200 foot long raised wooden walkway into the swamp below. The swamp runs parallel to the river
and is fenced off from the public walkway. There my cap lie in the mud on the edge of paper thin ice
above the water. Found a 7-8 foot long stick, and flicked it the rest of the way down the raised walkway
and under the fence. Whew!

George,
That's the ticket! Hope your fever has broke and you are feeling better. Music makes me focus on a task better, and time just flies by. Good composition!
