I got lured by the sheen on another originally non-ai Nikkor P (factory ai'd later). It looked like brand new and was inexpensive. It simply is beautiful, and it is like I found a lens forgotten on the shelf for 50 years & 5 day shipping! - all shot with the 55mm f3.5 AI'd.
Still playing with the long-way-round package, but it was worth the wait. I did find one flaw on the 180mm f2.8 ai'd lens. There is a tiny, tiny rub (about the size of a fly poo) on the back edge of the builtin hood. It really looks like a highlight to me, but I would think that it makes it miss the Rafael perfection seal of approval....Show more →
Actually James on lenses larger than the 135mm 2.0 you are allowed three tiny fly poop marks as long as they do not lie within 1 inch from each other.

James - that 180mm looks great, although I wonder if you would give those of us not familiar with fly poo another point of reference as to the size of the rub mark?

This probably won't mean anything to anyone on here except Colin and Steve, but every time there's a discussion about Ben's and Phillipe's work I think of this guy - Johnny Nice Painter from The Fast Show, a comedy sketch show in the UK in the 90's.
His wife always tries to steer the conversation away from the possibility of mentioning the word black of course
The usps wandering package contained a very low click enhanced IR converted Canon 5D. I still haven't cracked the 7D open for a third go at getting power to the boards. In that first IR attempt it was with a camera I didn't use much, and that I felt the crop sensor didn't deliver the best IQ. I also installed a 830nm filter which is intended for black and white only, and is very dark with a negative EV of 2-4 stops. That would further degrade the IQ, and so I began looking at the whole IR shebang again. I settled on 665nm enhanced color filter, because not only do you get some awesome colors, but you can get almost the same dramatic black and white. This way the negative EV is 1-2 stops, but the 12.8 MP sensor has much larger photosites which physically allows more photons to hit each site. I have used ACR with Bridge and Photoshop CS4 to uprez images since the early 2000s, and lightroom has the same ACR module builtin. I expected the FX > resize would result in much better IQ than a crop sensor. Today I created my IR camera profile in lightroom, The sun popped out for 30 minutes with blue skies, some wispy clouds, and green cedars. The old battery only allowed approx 20 shots, but new ones are on the way. Nikkor 35mm f1.4 ais

Andy - do you remember the Queensland Tourist Bureau slogan....... "Queensland, beautiful one day, perfect the next"
I don't mate, when was that ? (only been here since 2007).
Also, Coalcliff Beach, as you SHOULD know is in NSW (Just up from the Sea Cliff Bridge south of Sydney)
Only one I remember was Australia's "Where the bloody hell are ya?" starring who I now know to be Lara Bingle. Pretty sure I was in the UK still at that time. Oh and Paul Hogan's "Throw another shrimp on the barbie"
Are you familiar with the clip I linked to above ? Johnny Nice Painter ?

Ha ha..... I sense a note of reproach in the capitalised "SHOULD", yes, I know Coalcliff very well because I used to live in Stanwell Park when I first started work. No, I wasn't commenting on the photo directly but I knew you were in Queensland, or on your way, and when I saw that idyllic beach pic it made me think of the Queensland Tourist campaign. In fact they used lots of material like that except not so dark. Your last pic is even darker than that Coalcliff one, and, as you know, that coming from me is not a criticism, quite the contrary.
No, I didn't know the clip, but I watched them. I loved the sheer Englishness of them, and how when he goes beserk she just stays calm and says " we better be going home Johnny". Although the implication seems to be that lots of black is crazy..... and, well, what can I say, ......and frankly your last pic is about as dark as anything I've done.
I can't remember when the Queensland slogan was launched, they used it for years, was probably the 80s or 90s.

Haha, fair enough. Well it was just after dawn so it was pretty dark. That's why I don't do sunrises, seconds after the nice golden light bit it's over. I mean, I could lift the exposure but that's not what it was like at the time. The lights on the coast are a clue
Anyways, you think that one was dark......stick this in yer pipe and smoke it !
I've always been fascinated by the ocean pools here. Those two young fellas did actually throw themselves into the tumult shortly after. Mentalists !
PS - There was a bloke on that show called John Thompson. He's from Manchester, you'd like his accent ! Here he is parodying Bernard Manning, a racist comic from the 70s, also from Manchester.
Ben, great capture by the Spanish steps. That is an excellent area for street shooting, pick a spot and briefly wait for something interesting to develop.
James, awesome looking Nikkor-P. Have fun with the new toy.
Andy, excellent photos specially the stadium shot.
Getting the 830nm IR look is incredible simple using global adjustments with the Curves dialog in photoshop. (ctrl + M, white eye dropper/click, black eyedropper/click)
Random thoughts of the day. That happens when you are on vacation and have free time on your hands
I am really tired of adapting lenses. The results are always with a few exceptions below expectations. Lenses made for 35mm may work on medium format, but with compromises. Likewise using them on crop sensors removes some of the desired characteristics of the old lenses. At least for me they do.
Quality control of the various adapters are typically hit or miss and "getting what you pay for" does not hold true all the time.
And if I am really honest with myself, I really don't like the whole EVF mirrorless experience with adapting lenses. For me, nothing beats an optical viewfinder. Especially a split prism finder. Fortunately my eyesight is still good enough (corrected) to still use them. I am sure that one day it will not and I will address that then.
As our founder said, kit building is forever. So I think my "kit" is going to go through a radical transformation in 2022. Back to OVF and little if any lens adapting. *I don't consider LTM > M really adapting with the minuscule M ring and the lens actually engages the rangefinder focusing mechanism. So will still use the Nikkor LTM lenses on Leica.
But for the F mount glass it will be the Df (Nikon on Nikon).
Medium format will be Pentax 645Z with its optical viewfinder along with the Pentax glass I was adapting to the Fuji.
As for mirrorless, I will probably keep the Z fc with two native Z lenses, but no adapting.
All subject to change depending on which way the wind is blowing

Andy - I don't know John Thompson but I certainly know Bernard Manning. We were talking about the Beatles doco, Get Back, a few pages ago, well that shows them in 1969, which is at the same time that Bernard Manning would have been at his peak in working men's clubs in the north. It was a complicated time.
