I have no idea why anyone would do that. Maybe Bigfoot?
I think the scale of the rocks is lost in capture. The B&W works better than the colour versions, not sure about the sun rays.
Regarding edits, I think as long as it's not photojournalism then you can do what you want as long as you state it in advance eg a lot of nightscapes/astroscapes you need to do a composite with an exposure for the foreground and one for the night sky.
It's the age old argument isn't it? Ansel Adams did post work in the dark room bla bla bla.
Some people think it's art so there is no limits. On the subject, an extreme example I did recently discover that you can replace the sky in On1 RAW.
I agree that as the photographer/artist, you have the license to do whatever you want with your photos. That leaves the viewer to make up their own mind on the work. I just can't bring myself to like such manipulation to a photograph because I still think of it as two different art mediums.
Both with Fujifilm X-S10 + adapter + Nikkor 400mm f/5.6K ED hand held; top ISO 800 & 1/640s & 42% cropped (11/26MP), below ISO 1600 & 1/500s & 92% cropped (24/26MP).

Something I ran into in 2014 near a small lake up north that has no buildings on it's shores are very large stones wedged into large tree crotches.
Any thoughts on edits like these, or why anyone would wedge large stones into tree crotches?
Clearly the fish were not biting.
I like the color better, the rays overpower the rock. You could try adding sun rays as a luminance layer to a color shot.
I think ethically anything goes these days.
Andy, you moon is not suitably rotated for the S hemisphere!
Andy,
My wife just walked by while I was looking at your two sky replacement photos. "Oooo that's beautiful - where is that at?". I said "Melbourne Australia", and my Sydney Australian wife said..."nothing in Melbourne is that beautiful".

David,
Interesting that you would mention marker trees. There is one about 50 yards from the first example of the rock trees. I knew the chief's son from the local tribe, and he said they made them to mark trails, and made them when the tree was a sapling. I used this one for 20 years to photograph my kid's family portrait upon. Here is the 2008 version.

When I was in the Smoky mtns, the locals talked of natives bending branches of tree such that the bend branch grew pointing the correct direction. That is the only reason I could see for putting a rock in the wye.

Great conversation James, we all live in a new age where anything goes. As far as documentary work, I lean on the keep it real side. I think if you are a photographer you look to the tools you have and have to decide whether you prefer reality or something altered. If you are an artist then you work to the creative vision you have in your head.
Then there are techies and gear heads (no offense intended as I am clearly part gear head get caught up in the technology and sometimes scoff at the idea of using inferior gear, a notion greatly created by advertising and reviews.
This forum and the family we have become sometimes drives my decisions as well. Sometimes it drives extra cost to make sure you are using qualifying gear (aka Nikkor Glass). No complaints on this front for me, we not only have Nikkor GAS but we are so much more than that and we protect a legacy and have fantastic times while we are doing it!
Me, I don't get too mired in being told what to do, aka latest camera arrived today and I blame George for it for his excellent samples here and being someone I trust in our family here. The battery is charging right now, then the learning begins and more glass for it comes between now and xmas.
My Z7 is up for sale and the D500 is next. Ironically I still love my DF most, followed by my D850. I feel sad sometimes when I think of the thought of DSLRs dying off.
In closing, match the goal to your tools, decide what your shooting for, you the Artist, the documenter, or as a photographer which we all have inside ourselves here!
As for your trees, I would pull the highlights down, shadows up a bit and run silver effects pro using High Dynamic range and then select the shading to get the most desirable result.

Wow Wow Wow, I am in love with the new camera and adapter! Cyber Monday brought the Fuji GFX 50R down enough to say just do it and I got the expensive boosted version of the Metabones adapter. to give pretty much 1 to 1 with my Nikkors.
I am delighted to say, no crop at all! And the files that come from it, I am just floored! Here are a few test photos on some of the lenses.
I will have some more later, I took out the Fisheye, 20 2.8 Ultra, 45P, 55 2.8, 15 3.5, 50-300 ED. All worked exceptionally. In adapter heaven now!
Other test shots, so I do see some significant corner softness in some shots, I will have to explore that more. Some of these are not great shots, just showing what I got with the various lenses, it will be fun to explore them all plus 4 nikkors I picked up. So far from todays test I like the 45P and 50-300 most. So many more to try!

Liked every image you shared. You and George are in the same camp now.

Nice snag!
I never had luck with the focal expanders and went the Pentax medium format lenses and Nikkor large format lenses route with the 50S. Good to see that your combo works well
FYI - the Nikkor for Bronica medium format lenses work well if you control the light (can have flare), but the adapter combo for it makes it very unwieldy. I can imagine how it would be on the frame of the 50R.
Most of the F mount Nikkor fast primes over 50mm cover the sensor quite well without needing the expander. Especially if you like shooting a 5x4 crop.
Also the 50mm/3.5 GFX lens is a must have. Only native Fuji lens I have.
I know I have shown this old wagon frame before, but I wanted to see how the tiny 25mm LTM lens would do with this subject. The natural light that time of day is hard to manage. Used a Nikkor Y52 yellow filter to help with the contrast. 16:9 crop

Congrats Mark ! I did have a look at prices on Cyber Monday but want the 50S. They do seem to appear on the B&S forum really cheap.
