I agree to 100% on your final verdict.
For photographers lacking a huge arsenal of lenses this camera might be really nice as an alternative to other APS-C-offerings.
Nikon should just add some small and fast primes. 18/2, 23/1.8 and maybe a 40/2 or about.
Agree on the small fast primes. Fuji is leaps and bounds ahead in this for APS-C lenses. But still, this camera may be nice for adapting the small Nikon S rangefinder lenses. Very small adapter compared to what is needed to adapt F mount. But you still lose the character of those old lenses by shooting on a crop sensor. If only it was full frame vs APS-C
They did a nice job on the looks IMO. Very nice indeed.
This would have been great to use MF Nikkors on (with that alternate adapter). I don't care about the 20MP or lack of IBIS but APS-C ... Can't get past that.

Once again, if only. It would have brought me back to the Nikon camp if it were full frame.
I really want that fully articulating screen on Z-fc. To adapt a phrase - one man's madness is another's brilliance. I just hope this 'madness' will make sense a few years from now. Maybe a Df equivalent with a suitable minimalistic adapter on.
As a big fan of DX, I am uncertain where my Nikon mirrorless future lies. Z50 offers too little for someone who used D70 lineage or D100 lineage cameras. Z-fc needs lenses. You don't really want to put the FT-Z on that body. Can we have a FT-Zh(eritage) instead? Ugh! Nikon logic can be so difficult to understand.

They hit so many check marks on this. I really like the body. Plus having the LCD screen able to be completely turned to present a textured back is a nice touch. Would make a great travel camera. Hopefully this Z f line will be continued and evolve into something sustainable. The price seems right. No more than what people are paying for a high end smartphone. If it makes money for Nikon to continue, I am all for it.
George, I am somewhat glad that I am seeing more likes than dislikes for the camera. To be honest, I have no experience with the heritage cameras of the film era. Therefore, do not have strong feelings, attachment or memories of what they were like.
All I have heard/read is that the Df is a poor representation of them. I really like that camera but not enough to make me want an APS-C version. Reason why I love Nikon 1 is Nikon tried to give it more than a few native lenses. They have never tried the same for DX, even though it seems very obvious it will benefit them.
I am keen to see what the Z system will look like in a few years.
I love the looks of the Zfc, but agree that there needs to be more small primes. There is a 40/2 on the lens roadmap, but it will look like the modern Z lenses. I don't think it will look right on this camera. I like the idea of a retro/heritage adapter. If they are going to make a retro camera, they should make an adapter that makes legacy lenses look like they belong on the camera.

Maybe someone (Metabones, Laowa, etc) will come out with a speedbooster type of adapter like has been done for the Fuji X system. This would allow a somewhat shorter adapter and would expand the field of view to close to native focal length for the legacy glass. But for a straight adapter, it would still have to be a 30.5mm length to cover the difference in flange distance. I know Leighton is doing good work with his speedbooster.

Yes, that would be really nice. When I was shooting Fuji, I had a speed booster and it worked great.
Davinci Horse pov - lying on the ground under his raised hoof. Nikon F3HP, Fuji 100, scanned with 5DS-R, Nikkor 105mm f4 ais micro + Tubes. Oh yeah, lens used on the f3HP was the 35-105mm f3.5-4.5 ais.
The whole bronze is here and is 24 feet high. The raised hoof is about 6 feet off the ground, and the belly is about 10 feet off the ground.

Great point. This would certainly make the camera more appealing.
Still rather a full frame version, but a speedbooster would certainly open up options.
Even though I have not touched DX since I replaced the D300 with the D800 (and found manual focus lenses as a result), I am intrigued by the Zfc. The looks, and those cool looking lenses. Sometimes I think the new lenses look a bit too sterile.
And I do want to see Leighton and Steve as two happy bunnies
