Perfect timing I would say. I get to follow up George in posting

Even though I have not yet found the time to make a cup of coffee, I did take a quick snap.

20170620-DSC_2783 by b j, on Flickr

The thing about coffee, to me, is that I grew up in the Netherlands. Coffee is part of culture, intent on sharing time with friends and family, and enjoying a whole set of experiences. There is smell, taste, cookies and cake or pie to go with the coffee. I have not encountered a culture where the drinking of coffee is so entangled with nostalgia and rituals. That's something I like, and something I miss a lot. In other countries I visited, coffee is often offered out of politeness or convenience, but that is not the same. More often then not, the coffee offered is one of these instant brews, or something out of a machine.

In order to stay in touch with the coffee culture I grew up with, I gathered a set of habits and peripherals that help me brew a nice cup of coffee that makes me want to sit down and slow down. Just me and my coffee. The philosophy behind that, and behind obtaining the right peripherals, is as much an individual thing as finding the right car. Personally, I won't settle for a Honda Civic or Volkswagen Golf. When it comes to coffee, I want some luxury. So we're moving towards Mercedes territory, but not quite. I'm not going to be chauvonistic about coffee. Willing to look across the borders, Toyota is a perfectly fine cometitor, and so is Caddilac. Both are not Rolls Royce or Bugatti, which is good. Trying to impress the neighbours takes my mindset away from the pure coffee experience, and has me wondering about unimportant stuff. No need to impress anyone, but myself. So even if Cadillac has plastic buttons instead of ivory, inlayed with gold, to operate the heater, it is still every bit the ride I would want it to be.

So, even if I have not had the time to enjoy some of that coffee, I did gather all the peripherals needed, and am now waiting for just the amount of time I will require to enjoy that first cup.

George included a coffee mill in the box, to allow me to get the grind just the way I woyuld want it. Now that was one of the items I was still missing. With that, I will now go on the hunt for some roasted beans from New Guinea to serve when this half a pound is spent

And going from coffee straight to cameras, there is that rumour that I would leave Nikon and move to Fuji. Well, with a little luck, selling some lenses might allow me to hold on to the D3 while buying a Fuji X-Pro 2. After testing the waters, I found that the X-T2 does not give me the feedback I need to make photographs. As I mentioned before, it's that electronic viewfinder that gives me the feeling of observing the world through a TV screen or a computer monitor, where my Nikons always gave me the feeling of seeing a small crop of reality. I know that is just a matter of acceptance (and evolution), but I'm not accepting it (and choose to stay a dinosaur in a worl full of gophers?)

Sticking with the traditions of drinking coffee and observing my world through real glass, I'm still glad I am offered a way to enjoy a bit of all that new and revolutionary electronic gimmickery. But just as I won't buy a coffee pad machine, I am not ready for an EVF

And to be honest, how could I be, this far from a power plug? (I know John manages)

Buddy - love that shot and the story behind it. Amazes me how this forum connects people from all walks and from all locations around the world. Thank Curtis!

Rafael - love your connection to this page with the picture of the coffee berries Also, great find on that 105mm. It looks great.

Colin - man I really like your IR work. Good stuff. A unique view of Scotland

Ram - enjoying the Georgia photos, but not sure I could take 80 degree in the house for long. We are a spoiled bunch here in the US.

Curtis - wow, 96 degrees is hot for your area. Be careful in the midday heat, but really enjoying your floral work.

Ken - great colors from Zion NP. Such a contrast to where I am at.

Glen - Pavlov dog reference was funny Good use of the 16mm and really like the black and white.

Peter - Speaking of 16mm, love the Firehawk

Back to Buddy's comments above... I have been shooting this week with both mirrorless and "proper" DSLR (Df) and tend to agree with his thoughts about the two technologies. I find room for both but have limited my X-T2 use to the long lenses purely for the ease of focus confirmation. In the end you use what you need and what gives you the most enjoyment. Sometimes that means putting the cameras down and just enjoying the view.

Like fishing. You go out and get the latest lures, new line on the reel, freshest bait and catch nothing. Then nature steps in and shows you how it is done right in the same place you were fishing all day. Shot below as an example
(X-T2 and 400mm/2.8 AIS)

And finally will say good evening with a pirate themed sunset
(W-Nikkor·C 2.8cm)

I'm always amazed by this lens and its rather simple construction. Some reviewers have been unimpressed, but my copy is quite sharp. And mine is a beater lens compared to your new acquisition. Here's a crop from one taken yesterday at the Chinese garden.

Rafael,
Out of curiosity (not Nikon related) but is that a house encased in a protective sheet? For what purpose? Chemical attack on termites or something?

Haven't watched "Breaking Bad" then Colin? You are correct though, chemical attack on bugs. (Walter White in Breaking Bad in Season 5 runs the ice/meth lab while using the sheeting as a cover.)

My day out today part 1 - Cougal Cascades in Currumbin Valley south of Surfer's Paradise.

Before bananas were grown in farms in Queensland they grew wild and farmers planted them in valleys/rainforest. To restrict blight etc. in 1927 the QLD Government decreed that the fruit must be boxed so the farmer began cutting the local wood like Quandong and Flooded Gum using a band saw powered by a kerosene engine. The farmer would camp at the head of the valley in tent with his family while they milled the timber.

However, the banana crop failed due to the surrounding terrain preventing the bananas from getting enough sunlight so it was sold for cattle farming, and then a timber company bought the land in 1948 to mill timber. These are the remains seen here, partially renovated in 1986.

Fortunately, the residing farmer when selling the land refused to sell it to developers or timber concerns and it was put in the hands of the National Parks.

You said it Collin - termites. The US is somewhat civilized but they do not use termite resistance treated wood in the frame of houses. Typically this tenting and gassing is done as a condition of sale.

Just picked up a mint F3/T (black). Probably one of Nikon's most beautiful cameras but shooting the first roll of film I noticed a couple of peculiarities: its shutter release is super-sensitive, I shot 3 or 4 blanks; and, the shutter speed window in the viewfinder is often difficult to see when shooting vertically (which I shoot 90% of the time), however, it's not a show stopper when shooting without a meter (as I usually do) but could be a problem if one shoots the automatic "A" mode.

Anyways, I like the camera!

Thanks for the likes and comments on my work.

Glen it seems we have the western part of North America to ourselves. Nice series on Alberta's "Badlands" and its fossils.

Raphael in Florida we lose more houses annually to termites than hurricanes. Our neighbors house was just tented when it sold.

George nice work from the outer banks of NC.

Philippe the hospice series is very good and I echo the other comments on the nurse in the silhouette.

Well today is a favorite of mine and we are still on Jay's suggestion of places to go in Utah. The state boasts of its "Top Five" parks and Bryce Canyon is on that list. Here is the first set of Bryce.

If you never owned an F3 before, then, welcome to the club of F3 owners. With the F3/T you certainly picked up a beautiful camera.

For those who owned many other Nikons, but never an F3, the shutter release is indeed super sensitive. The film winder is any bit as amazing. Hardly any resistance as it runs on ball bearings with the finest grease to keep things lubricated.

(If I had to retake that photo, I'd mount the 80-200 f4 Ai-S, which seems to be right at home on the F3 (no surprise there given the vintage of both camera and lens)

I just learned more about my old F3. Rarely ever did a manual film wind. It's a camera that begs for that big old motor drive

D810 with the 180mm f/2.8 ED below - SOOC JPEG, not because I wanted, but because the SD card died. The interesting part is that when that happens, all the NEF files that were shot until SD card was replaced were gone and only JPEG was recorded to the CF card. Not the failure mode you would expect when the JPEG target card fails.

Anyway, had the camera set for Landscape color mode and the rest is pretty much what it does automatically. Moral of the story - stay away from "refurb" Sandisk Ultra extreme pro SD cards.

These geometric shapes and contrasting features attracted me in a nostalgic way.
The potato field drills reminded me that as a 10 or 11 year old I used to get paid to pick potatoes by hand during the October school holidays. Such child labor practices would be deemed illegal today in the UK - but it didn't do me any harm and actually taught me a healthy work ethic that I have carried throughout my adult life.
The tractor would uncover a few rows and you had to pick up all the 'tatties' within your marked area before it came round again. Tough work for little pay.

Some real nice work on recent pages... Colin's cool infrared shots, Ram's open flower shot, George's sunrise, I also like the very colorful submissions by Andy & Ken. Glen, you're making great use of that 16mm 3.5 AI. It's amazing how many excellent rectilinear looking photos I've seen from that fisheye lens over the years.

Here's some urban art on a crumbling wall in Chicago. Nikon 50mm 1.2 ais taken at 2.8.
