You just need a winter hobby. Come up and help with my projects. Repainting bathroom and kitchen cabinets this month. Took a day off of work today to get supplies.

We have been in our current house for 23 years, so maintenance is due. I was ready to do a full cabinet replacement but my wife said for us to go with the repainting instead. Between the bathrooms and kitchen, I think I am saving about $15k.
Now where else could I spend that money?
I am going to leave the countertops to the professionals.

George,
I don't envy you.
This time 4 years ago I was completing what you just described.
Our kitchen unit carcasses were 20 years old but too good to throw away. So I ended up painting them.
Measured up the worktops, cutouts etc, and ordered them online. I did all the fitting and plumbing. Long old job but saved a boatload of money. Just had to call in the professionals to install the new gas fuelled range.
Utillity/washer/dryer room got ripped out a year ago. Installed new everything on this occasion since the old stuff was falling apart.
This summer the plan is to completely replace our en-suite bathroom and return it to its former size. The previous owners had stolen a single bed sized chunk out of it to make an adjoining bedroom bigger. I can move the stud wall easily enough but will need to call in a plasterer to make good because I'd make a right royal mess of it.
I threw in the towel 2-3 years ago. Kitchen, master bath, small bath, all floors, all counters, every room painted, new mattresses and ceiling fans. Had the house built 29 years ago, it was time. We saved in cabinets with a refinish as they were all good and actually ALL wood not like what you get today!
Our house is built on a concrete slab. We need new flooring in our kitchen. The linoleum that was installed when our house was built 13 years ago has seen better days. We decided that we would have the concrete stained and, if we didn't like it, we could then have some other flooring installed. Usually, I'm a DIYer, but decided to hire pros to stain the concrete. The old linoleum has to be removed and the glue has to be ground away and the concrete somewhat polished. The quote came back very reasonable, I thought, except for the labor to remove the old linoleum. Being the tightwad that I am, I decided that I would remove it myself. Thankfully, my wonderful wife pitched it. It was 4 hours of very hard work, but it saved a ton of money. That was last weekend. The concrete guys come in a couple of weeks to finish the job.
I'm not sure what major project my wife has lined up next, but you can be sure that she's got something in mind.
You are not alone. I just finished laminating our 2nd floor and the next project is already in the pipeline; removing the carpeting of the open stairs on the 2nd floor and then laminate.
