One last one from October 7, 2015. Again between Three Forks and Whitehall. A lovely drive with sweeping vistas of a very beautiful but tough, unforgiving land. At least this pioneer found some shade!
And yes, it was a yellow day!

Very nice Colin!

Are you using LiveView or are you focusing through the viewfinder and using the IR offset on the lens focus ring for final focus?

George

George,
The D80 precedes Liveview so it is MF with IR compensation all the way! Manual exposure too. [Hence my wish to get a D7100 with CPU banks]

Generally I get visible focus confirmation via the green dot and then de-focus to IR wavelengths. I have learnt how far to tweak the focus ring for certain lenses without having to look away from the viewfinder and re-calibrate against the red-dot marker. I tend to shoot IR at f/8 so I have some margin for error. Alternatively I set infinity to the red dot and fire away. I do miss some shots through focus and exposure errors but that is part of the challenge.

I am hoping the D7500 release will cause D7100 owners to upgrade and reduce used prices.

Colin

hmm, first Nikon MF lens?

Mine was the 50mm f/1.8 AI (or AI-S?) - about 1984 in spring, purchased used with a used Nikkormat EL. I still have the camera, the 50mm I replaced in 1988. That was followed by some non Nikon glass (Tokina 24mm f/3.5 and Tokina 50-250mm), but by about 1988, I has a 28mm f/2.8 and the 135mm Nikkor-Q. The 28mm fell off Half dome together with the 50mm mentioned above. I replaced the 50mm, but never the 28mm. I missed the wide 24 Tokina, so eventually I bought a 24mm f/2.8 Nikon AI-S. Shortly after

I started with the 50/2 H, the forerunner of Peter's 50/1.8 AI, on a Nikkormat FTn around 1971 or 72. I still have the lens, but my cousin dropped the camera. Amazingly, the lens survived but the body didn’t. I later added the 28/3.5 H, the 105/2.5 P•C, and the 200/4 Q•C. The 105 still sees plenty of use, but the 28’s optical design is showing its age. In the intervening years many lenses have come and gone from my kit. Each of those lenses had its own characteristic charm. The only dog among them would be the 85/2 when used wide open or at close focus. Even it is quite sharp and contrasty when stopped down to 5.6.

Ken,

Amazing colours - must also be a geologists dream seeing all those exposed layers.

You are absolutely right. The best part is that according to the staff at the marina the lake level is down 85-90 feet. Everything that is white in the photos was not visible when the lake was at normal levels, We were very lucky indeed!

So now with my cross-Canada trek photos, I will leave the relative monotony of the prairies (at least, the part we drove through) and introduce you to the rather magnificent badlands of Drumheller, Alberta. I've had some difficulty boiling down the large number of photos I took in this natural feast for the eyes, so I hope you'll bear with me through the next few days as I post what I culled from the plethora of choices. This first set begins with the first glimpse we got of the badlands as we approached Drumheller, followed by a couple from our outing the next day. All are courtesy of various MF Nikkors mounted on the Fuji X-E2.

Our giant poppies are in full bloom. These stand about 5 feet tall and range from lilac to deep red. There were plenty of bees swarming around too but as I was leaving to go to work didn't have time to capture the bees going about their work.
So here is a triptych - sunny-side-up!

Very nice Colin. I'm not aware of such poppies, only big ass red ones with black middles and they certainly didn't grow that tall.

Day 1 here on the Gold Coast, crappy weather, daughter working so I went for a walk in the park.

It's been ages since I've had motivation to get out there and shoot for pleasure, it felt good despite the weather but maybe having a D800 back in my hand helped.

I was toting the 28/2 and 180ED

Well ..... I have tried and tried to post some pix

But the wi-fi here in the French Alps is against me all the way.

The place I am staying at has the worst internet connection I have had in many years. In fact dial-up was better that this !!

I will have to post lots when I get back to the UK unless I find a better area or server ....

Some great pix from others here .... when they eventually load .... !!

Still enjoying

Steve

Perhaps you can upload thru your phone connection as there're no roaming costs in the EU anymore.
A good 4G connection is as fast (or mostly faster) than a lousy WiFi connection.

Colin, your poppy shots are entrancing! I've been greatly enjoying your IR images as well.

In order to ensure that my badlands photos don't become an endurance test for you all, I'll pick up my posting pace a bit to get through them more efficiently. Here is another set from our outing. As Curtis mentioned in a recent post, manually focusing slows things down and, I find, more fully absorbs me in the moment and the subject of my photography. Being immersed in the badlands in this way was an almost transcendental experience.

Andy,

The soil in Hampshire must be perfect for opium poppy cultivation. We have a fee draining flint/stone soil.
See newspaper article from a few years ago.

Disclaimer - I have nothing to do with the above!

I must confess that we do let them just self seed everywhere but last year we did gather the seed and this spring sow them, along with other wild flowers, in a small wildlife area that we created in our front garden. The new plants are plentiful amongst the long grass. I hope they might flower later in the season.

If you don't hear from me again then blame the DEA.

"Escobar spotted in Eastleigh !"

Sounds more like a potential football transfer.

The wildflower patch sounds idyllic. Great for bugs and macro can't have one here - snakes !
