Wow, this thread is on fire. Since I was logged the last time - 40 more pages. Serious steam! Well, itŽs been about three weeks or something but it took me a couple of hours or so to catch up. IŽve been busy with everything and nothing. The inspiration that we spoke of a few weeks ago have not been on top. But it seems a lot of you guys on the thread have had a lot of inspiration So nice to follow up and see whatŽs been going on, well done everyone!
IŽll not be able to follow up much for a while now. Next week me and the family leaving for a well earned vacation to Indonesia, Bali. WeŽll stay there for almost a month and the first few weeks weŽll be almost off the grid with very little access to wifi. WeŽll stay on a little island off the coast of Bali with very little connection to the rest of the world. Then later on weŽll take the boat back to Bali and stay on the "mainland" for a few nights before we fly back to the swedish summer again. I bought a new memory card so IŽll be able to take at least 2000 shots back, hopefully with a high keeper rate
As always, I now stand before the dilemma: Which lenses shall I bring?
Alt1, go for the zooms:
25-50mm f/4.0 ais
50-135mm f/3.5 ais
Alt2, go for the fixes ones:
NC-24mm f/2.8 AiŽd
35mm f/2.0 ais
SC-50mm f/1.4 AiŽd (the 50mm f/1.8 ais unforunately got aoil on the blades )
HC-85mm f/1.8 AiŽd
PC-105mm f/2.5 or 105 f/2.5 ais
Q.C-135mm f/2.8 AiŽd
IŽll bring the 20/1.8 af in both choices and perhaps a bad-ss tripod... Knowing that Alt1 would be the best in terms of saving space and weight and that Alt2 have some special character to it gets me in a lot of trouble And of course there are some really nice character with the Alt2 too....Bahh..
Or shall I just bring em all??
Alt1 + a copy of 105/2.5 and you're settled. I'd rather take two bodies and less glass.

Ohh...I just took away the 28/2.8 ais. D_mn, those issues are not easy to solve. I'm thinking that I have the 20/1.8 af (not a nmfg, I know ) and 25-50/4. But the 28/2.8 is such an awesome little lens. Perhaps I can smuggle it into Annas backpack... Hmmm...

Add that to option 1 and you have a really fine kit.

My idea as well.
When I go fro far-away-travels I take as much gear as I can carry.
Bali wil give you lots of great opportunities, just look at Andy's posts (Cadman...). He probably will give you some tips.
You'll need fast lenses as well for portrait/evening/night/inside shooting So the 50/1.4 SC as well.
My take:
Two bodies (what if one fails, I had this a couple of weeks ago on a trip to Germany).
25-50 and 50-135 for shooting during the ay
50 and 105 for when you need the speed.
And the 24/2.8 because it's so small
The 3 primes weighs next to nothing compares to the zooms.
How about a fish?
BTW for those once-in-a-lifetime travels I'd depend on AF-lenses.

I always spread the weight with my wife during check-ins and take it back after. I tried to keep it in her backpack, but that doesn't work.
George, Philippe you owe it to yourselves to make it out west for the fun of it and the photography.
Joseph its funny that you mentioned tranquility. While in the Labrynth, Robin suggested we cut the boat motor to "feel" the silence. We did and heard talking coming from a boat that was behind us. So much for that!
I've also been following the debate on lenses to pack and this trip I had the 18mm F3.5, the 35mm F1.4, the NOCT and the 105mm F1.8. No zooms but in July we are going to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and "feel" the need for a zoom. Taking the Vette so size is a factor.
Here are some more shots of the "Labrynth." Very narrow on the way in and thanks to the low water level had the opportunity to get shots normally underwater. Because of the pitch of the canyon walls the center of the channel was where you need to be in order not to damage the prop.
Even though this is not critically sharp [hand held], I liked the way the light from an overcast sky was hitting this Kalanchoë tomentosa. It was sitting on a table in front of a black coat hanging on a rack.
As a game, I sometimes use just whatever lens is on the camera. In this case it was the 80-200/4 shot wide open at 200mm and ISO 2500 on D700, underexposed 1-2/3 stop.

Ken,
Very nice. You definitely have a B&W flower 'signature' - a signature I like a lot.
One of Curtis's favorite flower setups: The Df, Nikor-P Nikon 105mm f/2.5 Ai & PK-12 tube.
First bloom from a seed planted 5 years ago of the Montana State Flower. It is about the size of your finger nail.
ISO 100, f/5.6, ss 1/800, AWB
Thanks for your advice Chris. What you said and what the other said I'll have to bring an extra luggage with gear But it's true, I need perhaps the SC50/1.4 as well. But the thing is I dont shoot much portrait in general. But, just in case...
Also, I only owe two af's, the 20/1.8 af and the beloved but much too heavy 80-200/2.8 af ed. I would love to bring that lens as well but very heavy. The rest of the pack are mf's. I now think I've decided to bring following:
What bothers me a bit is that I dont have the TC200...would be nice shoot some tele too.
