Brian brought something interesting to our forum 2 weeks ago , he discovered that by adding a 2x extender to the front of the MPE he could focus from approx 3 times life size to infinity.
Well I jumped on this like a dog on a biscuit . The extender he used for this was the Komura Telemore 95-II it's a 7 element extender made some 30 plus years ago .
E bay never lets you down . I found some 2 pages of this stuff. I got one in M42 mount, in the box never open . NOS. 30 dollars Make offer.
Here are some more misc shots from this combo.
You can now have your MPE on camera , and a small 2x extender in your pocket that will turn your MPE into a 130mm macro lens that goes from 2 plus life size to infinity.
Amazing. I would buy another copy of the lens if it would work from infinity to 3 or 4x...I need to use it for larger critters such as large butterflies more than I need the admittedly remarkable 5x upper limit of the stock lens.
It would be great if Canon or someone would design a specific adapter custom-made for the stock MPE to convert it to a lower mag and infinity focusable lens. Just dreaming I'm sure due to the low sales volume of the MPE.
Wonderful shots Tom - a whole car with an MPE-65 - . IQ looks better than the shots I did !
I did get the impression there was something funny going on with the set aperture and DOF with mine almost as if the the aperture was physically smaller than set. Did mean to try some shots at more open apertures like these.
Is this giving a different focus range than your canon fit TCs ?

Just curious, how do you get control over f-stop via an old M42 2x adapter and how do you link it all up to the 30D?
fotonix the extender is put on the front of the MPE lens via any means on attachment , homemade adapter , tape, rubber hose ,etc. it's not right up against the front I pulled mine back away from it 1/4 to 3/8 inch.

whole car , who'd a thunk it
yeah the f stop acts like it is two stops or so off, and being this was on the D30 and not the 5D I'm getting more of the sweet spot of the TC.
I am getting a full range with the Komura , but the Canon TC acted more like a diopter. fixed focus distance around 4 inches, and bad image quality.
Not that I have an MPE-65, but would the Canon 2x extender do the same job?
...not that I have one of them either, but I'm just curious
Matt, DON"T go buy any TC other than the one listed at the top of the page . They do come in different variations , they have them to fit minolta, nikon, oly, M42, etc . that's OK but it has to be the ( Komura Telemore 95-II ) At this time it's the only one that we know will work this way. Maybe M Vers and other who have Tamron , Kenko, Bower and other TC's can try them and see what the results will be .
Amazing info, sometimes I tested a Sony VCL-DH1758 (teleconverter for compact cameras) in front of MP-E with a increase in working distance and even won about two stops by better light gathering (it decreased the magnification).
But never was able to infinite focusing with the combo, looks that the MP-E is a inverted 65mm lens with some rear elements to provide best quality at highter magnifications, the possibility to infinite focusing with a inverted lens is awesome.
I tried a Raynox wide angle converter on the MPE with mixed results -might have to shoot some more images with it and post the results. No infinity focus, but very low mag at 1x (turned the MPE into a wide angle lens).
