I only shoot film & hated the minolta cameras. The lens was good but I have the ZM 50 planar and I like the Leica bodies a lot so I wasn't using it.
I have basically accepted that ~50mm is really all I want to shoot and I just sold my 35 biogon. I have been looking at options for getting something a bit less expensive and putting the balance in the bank. I was looking at the ZF 50P and the 50MP on something like an F3 but hey, I saw a decent price on a 50/1.2 and may purchase it. ...Show more →
if you hate Minolta cameras I doubt this lens would cure you of that. I think most of the Minolta cameras suck too, but I am quite fond of my xd-11 (also called an xd-7 in certain markets). if you're looking to save money I would just get an xd-11 + mc 50/1.4 for ~$150. it's a better all round 50mm (better build too) if you aren't looking specifically for the f/1.2 look.
I actually like the mc 50/1.4 better than the zm 50/2, but a lot of that is probably due to my preference for the rokkor look over the zeiss look.

Did you compare them directly or just from what you see online?

thanks,
Phillip
i've shot with them both directly, but only for a limited time with the zm (just shot with a friend's). i didn't do any 1:1 comparisons as i rarely do and they're very different lenses. the zm is more contrasty and sharper at large apertures (at f/5.6 on aps-c i wouldn't give either one a resolution advantage). the rokkor is much more pleasing to my eye at f/2 and has an extra stop.

thanks, if it wasn't for that nasty hexagonal aperture blades

yeah, no kidding. the zm is definitely better in that respect. i still need to go through and see if there are any cheap russian rangefinder telephotos with the appropriate sized aperture and an appropriate number of blades for a transplant. otherwise maybe a jupiter-3 could do the donation...

keep us updated ;-)
I had banned my Minolta 100/2.5 from my camera bag because of the 135/2.8 but a i wanted to travel light this weekend it got another chance and made good use of it, really like the results.
Funny how this thread gets more activity than the Alpha mount thread. These pics qualify for both: I just picked up a Rokkor 58/1.2 adapted for A-mount. Still trying to learn how to use this lens. My first impression (somewhat surprisingly) is that I don't particularly care for this lens for WO closeup shots, but that I love the rendering in medium distance subjects with a more distant background. Also somewhat surprisingly: at least on the a850, I don't love it indoors, but I really like it WO outdoors in good light. I'm still also struggling with the focus, having gotten used to being able to zoom in on my NEX.
see the second one is what I liked about that lens. I have never been a fan of the super washed out backgrounds.
anyway thanks guys on the help with the 50/1.2; I think Im gonna pass. I dont think the 50MP is a good purchase for me right now so it looks like Im gonna go home empty handed. oh well.
I have heard and seen good things about the 50/1.4 MC but it doesnt have enough going for it to make it worth it right now. Maybe if I could stick in on the digicam in a pinch or if I like Minolta cameras.
