My first full day with the Rokkor 58, I apologize for the heavy handed post processing these are 1D3+58 1.2 mostly at f/2.8. It was a friend's last day of work at Johnson Space Center here in Houston (heavy layoffs), so he was superkind enough to let us around the campus for a more intimate tour. Had a wonderful time!

Full set (sorry its mostly 17-40 shots! :P)

These are apparently leftover parts from the Mercury space program?

I just scoured the entire thread looking for 58/1.4 shots. I don't need the extra speed or skinny DOF from 1.4 down to 1.2 ... so I'd rather save a $$$. BUT, it seems that virtually nobody is using the 58/1.4 ... is it THAT MUCH different from the 1.2

Seems the bokeh is creamy smooth compared to the 1.4. Its the legend

Its not the speed, i think most of us shoot at f/2 or smaller but the bokeh is incredible. Wide open is something else..silly creamy

different lens design (f/1.4 has one less element) and very different look. the MC PG 50/1.4 is much closer to the look of the 58/1.2 and even cheaper than the 58/1.4.

there are even offers for converted ones ...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Minolta-Rokkor-58mm-1-4-Fast-Prime-Lens-Converted-Canon-EF-7D-40D-50D-60D-T2i-/230672522052?pt=Camera_Lenses&hash=item35b5275b44#ht_7151wt_1280

but they do not show the lens from the back. could be that it is a bad conversion. a serious trader would show pictures of the lens alone !?!

L.

PS: once i had a 55mm 1.8 on Oly E-510. That also seems to be a great lens.

Awesome! Leady, is that field curvature making the bricks on the right in focus?

good question ! i am not shure, you have the same effect in the distagon 35mm 1.4. there you are in focus in the middle and in the corners, but for the rokkor i need to check....

... done ...

if you use it wide open, you have a strong vignette, which makes the difference between the focus (middle) and the blur (middle) strongest. In contrast you have a "semi-"blur in the corners.

nice effect

Yeah I've also seen it in the cy 35 1.4. I think it's field curvature, but combined with the soft edges and a bit of vignette, it is quite cool and I quite like it. There a portrait in the Zeiss 35 1.4 thread of a motocross rider which has all these and looks amazing

Here's the link I was referring to:

https://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/839374/58#9852642

So does that only occur wide open or at certain distances?

... but at the motocross rider the focus is on the tire.

I think, this is such a picture::

you can see, that it is sharp as well in the corners... the focus area is curved on the ground, see the ground-bricks.

Yep. I always thought field curvature would ruin shots, but it seems to make them better somehow, especially for these type of shots which I would be using the lens for.

I realised once I found the motocross picture it didn't show any field curvature, it's still an awesome shot though!

I just got a cheap Chinese branded EOS bellows and dual axis slide rail kit.
It isn't as bad people have told me it would be, I'm guessing "the people" on the "other" forums don't know how to use their gear?
Anywho, OF COURSE, it was windy the entire weekend I wanted to play.
So, my niece and I played with it anyway!
I'm guessing these are all wide open, I didn't take notes.
Some are soft/OOF due to the freakin' wind! Believe me!
Heh, *8^)
Oh, NO PP, other than running through Image Processor to resize and convert to JPEG.
I guess Camera Raw uses whatever defaults are set?
