Thanks, Charles! Yes, I felt perfectly comfortable photographing those birds in the last shot
No, but seriously, the M9 is definitely a more discreet tool than a DSLR. Plus it looks so anachronistic that I suppose that the subjects don't really know what to make of it.

Yes, I think so, a photo student with a grand-father camera or something. I don't recall ever being looked at funny when carrying my M8, but every time I carry the D3, especially with the Nikon handstrap and the 100MP, people look at me, worried and suspicious. I have no idea why.
I'm not sure how things are in Germany now, it's been a decade since I've been, but unfortunately where I live (very conservative and relatively culturally void) people, I think, assume anyone with a camera that appears large is considered a potential predator. It's a shame that they don't understand those people are using cell phone cams or hiding in bushes with super telephotos
I blame the news and sensationalist journalism that misrepresents stats... Otoh I have to be sensitive to the fact that anyone of Latino roots is concerned that someone making their photo is doing it to send to immigration here.
Zombii, thanks for showing us some of your Noctilux shots, and thanks for sharing your thoughts. I went to the camera shop today and played with one. It was the one that has the hood I like (last batch of the f/1s I believe). It was really stiff in the focusing dept, and you really have to turn the sucker, but I liked that, it reminded me of my ZE lenses all precision like. The Summicron also has quite a bit of a turn, but my copy is loose as easy to turn, so it's kinda less precise in my unskilled hands. I took two shots, and they didn't turn out very well, but I was being intimidated by the sales staff who was eye'n me like a hawk ready to run away with his overpriced lens.
Anyway, now I think I'm officially looking for a noctilux if I get a good enough deal I'll buy. But in the meantime I'm looking for a Lux-asph so if I get a good deal I'll buy.. It's now a race to see what comes my way first.
denoir, it's funny but it doesn't seem like you're using an M9, except for your spontaneous but amazing canoe shot, I think I'd get the lens after looking at that shot. Also in your last batch of shots, on first glance I really liked the guy walking down the path, the lens seemed to work it, but the bokeh is a bit rough if you look closely, and I'm not sure if it's your sharpening, or the lens characteristics. Please advise when you have a chance.
charles, great capture, I'm starting to see what you mean about it being a heck of a lot less intimidating using the M9. I'm able to grab people shots, a DSLR wouldn't have allowed me. But again tradeoffs, your file doesn't look that clean, and from what I can tell it was a bright day when you snapped that shot no?

HAHAH, have you read PCBs statistics on illegal aliens in the United States of America? I'm sure half of them probably are worried you're a immigration detective.

Adam, how do you mean that it doesn't look that I'm using an M9? Do you mean rendering style or image content/composition?
The rough bokeh is because of sharpening. I actually missed focus a bit there so I added some extra sharpening.

Yah maybe I should wear my green card around my neck. I don't get troubled as a white guy who sounds 'merican though, I'd be pretty upset if they stopped my mother...not that ice assumes too many British illegals are in the country... Anyway, sorry for the hijack

Yeah, sucks... I live in Singapore and because I'm a white guy I'm either:
A) Out to sexually harass the local girls
B) I'm a rich white expat with sucker written on my face, who'll pay outrageous prices for camera goods. In fact they quote me so high, I have a hard to actually buying gear. If it weren't for the iPhone and mobile browsing, I couldn't even put up a good argument.
C) I'm obviously cursing the mall to get a tailored suit, cus I need more F*N suits.
D) Whenever I go out to bars with my fiancee, she gets the "SPG" treatment, and she's mixed?!
The cool thing about this, if I have a camera strapped around my neck people think I'm a tourist, and sometimes the old guys will offer up suggestions on places to eat. And random conversations lead to random portraits. Now with the M9 it's even less intimidating.
Charles travels to thailand a lot, he should know the white guy in South East Asia treatment. I'm sure every time he leaves his hotel they're offering up some kinda pingpong show and a tuk tuk ride

Nice shot of the guy walking. I think I took that same picture - though I missed focus by about 5 feet This was with the 50 ASPH - ooo too clinical :P
Yeah kinda is to clinical
Seriously though, how'd you miss focus by 5ft, the guy had his back to you, no need to be sneaky?
BTW I always nail my focus, but I think my lens or camera misses

On some images, yes rendering style is very unlike what I've seen/experienced with the M system.
In some images you've still got that structured "I'm an engineer" composition style that a lot of Zeiss fanatics have (are you an engineer?).
But then all a sudden wham, you'll get a spontaneous M shot. Which is really funny because most people on the forums are rather neutral in there shooting. With only a slight lean in one direction or the other.
It's all a good thing, what I'm explaining, but it's fun to see from an outside perspective.
I've said it before but your canoe shot was really awesome, reminded me of a shot I took of some threadfin (fish) sitting on ice with the 35ZE.. You'll have a few spontaneous shots, then your boat shots are like you're trying to be a Canon ZE shooter.
For you the M system seems to be a smaller version of a DSLR (which is what you've said it's going to be), but for others when they make the switch, it's like a new shooting experience. It's very entertaining!
Yeah I was wondering if the bokeh was that way because of subject distance, but wasn't sure if it was a PP issue, as your other shots were smoother, but the subjects were closer. I like the lens, and it seems to be working for you.

It was snowy, wet, and cold. I took two pictures of the guy and it kind of slipped my mind to refocus between the two. Haha. So 'missed focus' really means 'didn't focus'. However, I liked the 2nd composition more than the first, and in my mind, the focus didn't really impact the image one way or another.

Yeah it really didn't matter much for that particular shot.
I'm just messing around.
ummm you know how many times this week I didn't take the lens cap off my camera while I was shooting!
Can't quite get use to the idea of a RF not being TTL...
