Zeiss.

In some images you've still got that structured "I'm an engineer" composition style that a lot of Zeiss fanatics have (are you an engineer?).

Guilty as charged!

But then all a sudden wham, you'll get a spontaneous M shot. Which is really funny because most people on the forums are rather neutral in there shooting. With only a slight lean in one direction or the other.
It's all a good thing, what I'm explaining, but it's fun to see from an outside perspective.

I've said it before but your canoe shot was really awesome, reminded me of a shot I took of some threadfin (fish) sitting on ice with the 35ZE.. You'll have a few spontaneous shots, then your boat shots are like you're trying to be a Canon
...Show more

Very interesting observations. Makten and Ryan commented how my M9 shots were different from my 5D2 ZE shots. I'm not sure that I see it myself beyond that I still have to master the M9. I would guess that the M9 shots are most similar to my Zeiss 35/1.4 images as I use that lens handheld most of the time. I use my ZE glass most of the time from a tripod. My "natural domain" would actually be medium format photography but unfortunately the digital MF systems avaliable today are not practical enough.

As for the canoe shot, the approach was not really different - I just happened to see them from a good angle and I took a couple of shots until I got the framing I wanted. I followed up with a few shots from close up as apart from the stacking of the canoes I also liked the aluminium texture.

For you the M system seems to be a smaller version of a DSLR (which is what you've said it's going to be), but for others when they make the switch, it's like a new shooting experience. It's very entertaining!

It is a new shooting experience - I can't frame worth a damn! No but seriously, while I recognize that different camera systems can be easier or harder to use for some things, I don't really consider the camera of being anything but a tool that is used to implement a creative vision. The camera should bend to the will of the photographer, not the other way around. I think that it's a common problem that people think that a Leica should only be used for B/W street photography. The sad state of the Leica user's forum and the rangefinder forum (b/w "street" shots made by apparently pointing the camera in a random direction in an urban environment) is an example of that. This seems to be a problem especially apparent with Leicas with photographers fancying they are the next HCB but without an elementary understanding of the basics of composition. This forum is fortunately an exception (there are others such as the GetDPI forum) where you can find a fairly wide variety of styles.

So while there are things that the M9 either helps or makes more difficult, the type of photos I wish to make remains the same. I love to do abstract closeups where I play with bokeh - something I can't do with the M9 due to the poor MFD. At the same time the portability of the system helps me to get some shots that would have been more difficult with a DSLR. All things considered a DSLR as a far more versatile tool but the diminutive size and portablity of the M9 definitely has its appeal.

Anway, I'll balance out all that talk with a couple of more shots from yesterday.

Canoes, less exciting angle:

Luka....I will need to look at your prior post with the 25 but #2 taken with the 25 looks NOTHING like what I was getting. I was getting a ZF 21 type DOF with excellent contrast and extreme sharpness all over. Your lens looks nothing like that. I really like #1 & #4 btw....

Edit: The CA looks horrible as well...especially being a f/3.5 shot. I was not seeing that at all.

It'll be a great day when I can start to edit and weed through some 3000 exposures I've taken here in NZ. For now, another 'unedited' shot.

25mm zm biogon, f/11, M9, b+w linear pol, singh-ray reverse nd grad.

Thanks Ryan. #2 was shot with very high contrast - the f/3.5 is most likely actually f/2.8. I have however had problems in high contrast situations even at f/5.6. Plus the focus ring gives a somewhat uneven resistance. So I may have gotten a lemon and it may need a trip back to Oberkochen...

Regarding DOF, I'm getting a surprisingly thin DOF from it at f/2.8. The closest I've seen near that focal length is the Canon 24/1.4 @ f/1.4..

Here are two more shots with it. Please ignore the strong red/cyan drift - it was configured as a 50 lux asph as I had forgotten to change the settings after using the Sonnar:

And one Sonnar:

Thank you Luka and Adam
Adam, the shot was converted using Silver Effex Pro, and I forgot to turn off the grain!
Yes the M9 does draw interesting positive attention and does quite often becomes a talking point, where it allows you to talk to the people from a different angle.
I had an interesting experience in Phuket, Karon beach, where a family were relaxing with a tuk tuk business. At first they were very negative, as someone had been previously taking photos with a DSLR, very pro looking, and they have received some negative publicity through some articles that had been written. But after sitting down for a while, the entire family warmed up, and were looking forward to have their shots taken. I don't think this would have happened if I had the 5DII.

Obviously there are too many engineers in this forum...go figure!

Kidtexas, really nice shot! Love the mood to the shot

Great shots Luka! My favourites are with the 50 Sonnar...so far! You mentioned about the MFD, and I have made mentioned before, that the difference between 0.7m and 1.0m is a large advantage. Having the 50 Lux with a MFD of 0.7m, does lend itself to portraits even though the perspective can be distorted, and a wider variety of compositions. The ZM 25 also a small MFD of 0.5m, but on the M9 it is 0.7m which can yield interesting shots.

Dan, really nice shot!

Vlad, very interesting series of shots! The last shot leaves you feeling very stark and empty.

Interesting discussions! When I reflect on the 5DII and M9, I now think more in terms of special lenses that reflect my vision of what I see. It was the Z* thread that opened a new way of rendering photographs, beyond what I could achieve with the Canon lenses. My favourites with the ZE's are still the 100MP, 21, 35 and 50MP. Out of the Canon L my favs there are the 85LII and the 135L.
Since the M9, finding the right lenses has been a balance of what I love and what I can afford But so far, the favs are the 50 Lux Asph(no surprise), 90 Cron AA, ZM 25/2.8 and possibly the 35 Cron Asph. I do have on order after selling some equipment, a 35 Summilux AsphII... hopefully not too far away. When the 35 Lux arrives, the 35 Cron will be traded in.

For my style, being on the move, I love the form factor of the M9. Now when I pick up the 5DII, I find it huge, although I didn't really notice it before, or just ignored it. Framing with the M9, I really learning to focus more on the composition even while on I am active or on the move. The frame lines are quite accurate when you get used of them, or you know where to interpolate them.

Yes the M9 does draw interesting positive attention and does quite often becomes a talking point, where it allows you to talk to the people from a different angle.

One interesting thing is that I've twice now had women approaching me and commenting on the "pretty" camera. My 5DII with Zeiss glass never got any direct attention but with my 7D and 70-200/II I've often had people asking me one if I was a pro and how far I could see with that thing. They were exclusively guys. So that's an interesting change.

Obviously there are too many engineers in this forum...go figure!

Not all that surprising though. With Zeiss and Leica you are looking at a demographic that 1) cares about details in rendering style and 2) has enoguh money to buy the not entirely inexpensive equipment. You end up with primarily with engineers but also with lawyers, doctors etc.. A starving artist can't afford such gear and a pro photogtrapher won't bother as it will only complicate the work and the clients don't care anyway.

Yes, I'm much more lens oriented as well which is sort of a problem with the M9. The only lens I've seen that has both a unique rendering style and one that I like is the 50/1.5 Sonnar. I am however not blown away by it. I have been more impressed with all of my ZE glass, the Zeiss 35/1.4 Rollei and the Rokkor 58/1.2. So although I do like its rendering style, it's not a lens that I would have bought for the 5DII had it existed.

Speaking of Zeiss, I tried a couple of long exposures from tripod yesterday. I'd shoot a couple of shots at max aperture and max iso to get the framing right and then I do the longer exposure. Not exactly the best workflow and the "noise reduction" stage slows it down.

Anwyay, 25/2.8.. 100% Zeiss rendering. Ignore the EXIF - all was shot at between f/5.6 and f/8:

Luka, great shot with the Pentax! Very classical art house feel to it

A portrait shot this afternoon with the 90 Cron AA. I am still having problems with the focus mechanism of the 90 AA. I know it's not me, as I virtually have 95% focus hits with the 90 Elmarit. I will have the lens sent back to be fixed! It is worth pursuing to get the lens to focus like the Elmarit. Carsten's comments ring true

Vladi excellent B/W shots. B/W is the thing I miss most about the Leica as my Nikon just doesn't give me the same results...not even close. I do slightly prefer the B/W from the M8 over the M9 though

Luka, those 25 shots are what I was expecting....the last two posts you had of them. Excellent. I like the stars the ZM line produces better than the ZE/ZF line. Those shots are sharp, and as you say, very Zeiss like. I'm still confused about the 25 shot you posted at the top of the page, that rendering looks nothing like the rest of your 25 shots on here. Not to mention the lack of sharpness

Charles, love the rendering on that portrait. Very nice.

Thanks Ryan. A key difference is that these were shot at a much smaller aperture and the light is even. I have a couple of shots with a medium distance focus and very strong backlight where the results are disastrous. I'm still not quite sure if it's expected performance or if there is something wrong with the lens. The shot on top of the page had some camera shake.

Anyway, a 35/2 shot in a non-denoir style

denoir - The Pentax 67 shot's really very cool. And yes your last shot is unlike you
And yes you really do make a camera work for you, you don't let it change you.

Charles - Awesome 90AA shots, I really like that lens, and you're saying it still needs to be sent in?

Best,
adam

Luka, great shot! Really love the retro style of the shot.
Adam, the 90AA was front focusing before, and now is back focusing, so the calibration needs to be redone. It is obviously not an easy lens to get right, but I love the rendering it yields, so it is worth the effort, as there is charge in the recalibration.
Joe, really nice shots, glad to see you here

Fantastic composition. The natural frames and the mood is striking.

And this is just pure love for urban darkness! Thanks for sharing.

Edit: And by the way, I don't get the thing with posting the same pic in color and B/W. That can make a good shot look bad. It sort of signals that the photographer isn't confident with what the final picture should look like. Bear that in mind, all of you. Even if the thread is aimed at technicalities, photography is still art.
