I know what you mean, but, according to online samples and user reviews, the Sonnar is much better wide open than the Planar 50/1.4 for SLR. It seems the main problem is the focus shift, and when addressed properly the in focus parts are quite sharp and there is less veiling haze.

Is yours optimized for 2.8?

Nope, my old one was assumed to be, and it was great at 1.5 when I was able to nail focus. But it's a lot easier to nail focus with my 50lux (assuming I'm not focusing and recomposing).

I don't like the 50/1.4 ZE, ZF at all.. I much prefer the 50MPZE (in fact still one of my all time favorite lenses).

Thinking of doing the optimization myself, I've read about how its done, I just need to find some free time to do it without distraction.

Adam, actually, I will recommended sonnar highly. I sold it but if I can sell my lux at $3800, I will keep sonnar. (I don't want more loss on selling things.) My opinion is at f1.5, if you take portrait, the difference between it and lux is hardly noticeable given DOF and focus error. Bokeh might suit my need better. I am not the only one complain 50lux's 'smooth' bokeh I guess Now, the thing is what aperture it optimize at? I prefer at f2.8. I will compensate the focus at f1.5 with 2M. It is pretty easy, just practice

Haha, I was shooting something the other day with the 50lux and I was thinking that the bokeh would be more interesting if it were brush-stroke in rendering like the sonnar, and I decided to just order one on a whim.. Now I'm annoyed that I did, as I remember why I sold mine off

That and I've gotten so use to the focusing tab on the 50lux, that I no longer like the bump on the ZM (use to love the ZM bump). Oh and the f/stop ring is not in half steps...

In all fairness it's been raining here quite a bit. So I'll give myself a bit more time with the lens before I sell it off.

I have lots of lenses now, but I'm slowly starting to think that I could get away with just having the 50lux and 35cron or 28cron.. I think I buy and sell lenses because I'm bored/restless with the little free time I have.

Anyway, I think I'm going to keep the Sonnar at least until my next trip, whenever that is.

Nice shots BTW, you have better luck with your 35cron then I do

While I'm on the topic of 50mm lenses. Here are some shots from the other day with the 50lux. I was at a wedding show with my fiance (one of the stationery sponsors: www.papertigerpress.com) and we were also supporting a friend who was in the show (pictured below, the girl in more then one image) and a friend who owned the shop.

Hi everybody,

Before I ask anything - yes I am fully aware that same question must have been covered so far ( probably many times ), but it's kinda difficult to read all those 585 pages to find all the answers, right...?

It's about "right" 50mm lens. Here's the story: I have possibility to buy brand new 50 Lux-asph - no waiting time at all - my camera dealer has it on the stock! My wife told me I was out of my mind willing to pay that amount of money for one lens, but it seems that she has accepted it now...

But...

I didn't have chance to shoot lux myself yet ( I read really a lot about it though ) - I expect to do it tomorrow. But during the last several days I had opportunity to test latest 50 Summicron - and...I like it very much! It is insanely sharp from wide open ( a lot of people say it is sharper @f2 then Summilux! well, that might not be the truth, but I can hardly imagine a lens that can be sharper! ).

So now, even I got a green light from my wife to buy Lux - I am thinking if that really would be a good idea or I would be better of buying a Cron...? And use spare money on 24mm Leica or 25 Zeiss ( I have idea to shoot Leica with only 2 lenses 24/25mm & 50mm )

Surely I get one extra stop with Lux( 1.4 vs. 2 ) and creamier bokeh, but is it worth the money? Specially if Cron really is sharper...? What do you say? What are your experiences and thoughts about this?

Thank you very much!

At the end a couple of random photos taken with Cron - all of them wide open:

Hard choice. I had the 50 Cron DR as well as the 50 Lux ASPH. The Cron is a really nice lens, nice boke, good sharpness, a classic, but... The 50 Lux ASPH is probably the best lens I have ever used, for any system. Not everyone agrees though.

Perhaps one of the best ways to decide is to actually look at all these 585 pages, paying careful attention to which lens makes which photos. You get a good feel for it after a while.

Held og Lykke!

Nice samples, you will be just fine with 50cron

I can feel your pain Hopeful there is more people visit this thread and have used several 50mm lens to give you’re an idea. Why not try to bring this question to outside of this thread? Or even other forum like GETDPI or LUF? You might get a lot more opinion than here.

Anyway, here is my take: at WO, it is sharp and might be the sharpest 1.4 lens. Is that really important? Not to me, unless you shoot 1.4 landscape like KR did or some flat painting. A lot of 1.4 lens will give you very close performance to it and cost significant small fortune. For landscape, it definitely sharp enough for me, but overall, I am not that impressed with its slow down performance. At f2, it doesn’t improve much compare to f1.4, might because of 1.4 is already pretty good. (I feel MP50 has better optical at f2 for most of the frame.) So I think if you don’t need use it a lot at f1.4, the summicron is a better bet to you for the performance and price.

Its CA control is very good almost to the APO level, which is a good thing. Contrast slow down is very high. Bokeh is very smooth if you after that.

I don’t like its handling, the pull out hood feel cheap. But that is just personal opinion. You know some lens you will just instantly like it,(say, ZF351.4, P50, P85 and 50luxR ) some just not, this case is 50lux. I should say a big part of the reason I never really like it is I have very high expectation for it. And I think it is overpriced. I feel its reputation has something to do Puts review, a leica bible.

Please don’t feel offended if you are 50lux owner as well all is just my feeling.

As for other 50mm lens, I just write something in previous pg about Sonnar, it pretty sharp WO and meet my requirement for portrait. F2.8 it is already very sharp lens. F5.6 only corner still lag a bit.

I also enjoy use 50cron Rigid, small, light with high build quality, most important can be have around $1000. Slow down, it is close to 50lux, it is not as sharp as 50lux until f4.

A lot people (Edward) also use ZM lens like planar, it should be close or as good to summicron for much less price. However, other than performance, you also happen to care about build and handling, you might want choose Leica and forget about other brand.

I like to use f2 lens for rangefinder system, it is a lot less fussy about focusing. (I have to send my 50lux to Leica to have it perform as is)

Will I sell 50lux? Probably not, as it is does nothing wrong. And it is a good tool for anything I can think of. Will I buy it at full price again now with the knowledge I have, no I guess. At least not for the full price. $3000 I will go for it.

Enough said. Hope it helps.

I shoot 50mm most of the time, and, although I considered the 50 Summilux, I went for the 50 Summicron because of the cost and size. The Summicron doesn't impede the M9's viewfinder as much as the Summilux, it feels smaller and lighter, and I was able to to purchase used the 28 Elmarit ASPH, 50 Summicron collapsible, 50 Summicron V and 90 tele-elmarit for about the same price as the single 50 Summilux. All of that for one stop wasn't quite worth it, for me, but the 50 Summilux certainly is fantastic.

Andrew, Very nice set, #3 is my favorite. Did you try those meat bun? those are use to be my favorite breakfast. Though a little bit too rich, but once for a while is OK.

Some from Shanghai, only be there one day and more than half with our friends. So not many photos.

21 Lux:

Thanks everyone for the comments!

Very nice examples Michael.
Andrew, seems you were really drawn in to the food... was it tasty? like the door knocker a lot.
Adam - these look really good, especially the skin tone. Did you do much to these in post?

I kind of agree with you Michael about the 50 Lux ASPH being somewhat overrated. It seems to have acquired a mystical aura of optical perfection, when in reality it's not perfect, at least in some situations, such as near distances wide open, where it's got some SA, and mid zone resolution can also takes a dip...

And I also hate the hood design. Kind of disappointed to see a similar design used for the new 50 Cron AA.

As for the Lux vs. the Cron.... IMO, the value of the Lux is that there isn't another M series lens of equal capability, both in terms of speed and overall optical quality (not counting the much more expensive Noctilux). If you think you'll need f/1.4 a fair amount and can benefit from a lens that is sharp at f/1.4 across much of the frame, even at infinity, desire modern near-perfection, neutral bokeh... then go for it. IMO, the Lux is a 'technical' lens for those times when you want precise results. If you plan to do a lot of portraits or are looking for something a bit less predictable, then maybe the Zeiss Sonnar is an option. There's also the discontinued Voigtlander 50mm f/1.5. Centrally is comparable in sharpness to the Lux (though with a touch of purple fringing), but it's not sharp across the frame wide open.

My issue with the Cron is for less than half the price you can get the ZM 50 Planar with (on paper) very similar performance, though the Cron has much less distortion. Admittedly, I have not tried the latest Cron (non-AA) and suspect it will render somewhat more gently than the ZM.

IMO, it makes sense to have at least two 50mm lenses. One, such as the Lux ASPH, for its modern near perfection. The other, a vintage 50 for character. The Zeiss Sonnar fits here, as does the Cron rigid/DR... but I'd say, look for something even more vintage, such as a Sonnar design from the 50s/60s. There are the Nikkor 50s (f/1.4 and f/2). I believe Canon also made a Sonnar design, though it's difficult to find now. Their non-Sonnar 50/1.8 and f/1.4 also have good reputations...

A couple from the Munich Leica store... basically test shots with the 21/3.4... as the sales rep writes up the bill...

Wonderful pictures, everybody. I can't comment on all of them but I would like to mention the ones that really, really impressed me:

1) I like the photos taken by Ron during our walk across the Englischer Garten in Munich. They have detail, contrast and punch at the same time. Absolutely admirably work in my view. I'm just wondering who this stupid looking guy on the left hand corner is (in the last photo). Ah, it's me.

2) Andrew, the entire set in post 584 #8 is absolutely stunning but the last picture still stands out.

3) zhangyue, the first picture in post p.584 #16 is so nice. Cute girl.

4) Adam, impressing set. Very nice portraits!

And here's one from me. I'd call it "Twoday":

Thanks guys!

rscheffler - White balance and contrast since I can't judge WB on screen, and I like more contrast in my images then Leica RAW provides. However, I got the exposure right in camera so it didn't really need much adjusting in my opinion (shot in manual mode).

profus - IMHO, very close up shots like your first shot, and street scenes (far focusing distances) and I like the 50cron. Half body portraits and mid distances and I prefer the 50lux. Honestly though the 50APO is the best of both worlds but it's a stop slower then the lux, and in all fairness the 50/2zm is a great lens for way less money (but can give slight double bokeh effect, not as bad as the 35/2zm though). The 50sonnar is great for character, but it lacks in sharpness (or is a hard lens to get sharp) and sometimes the bokeh doesn't do what you want it to do (if that makes sense).

Bottom line, for the way I shoot, and for my personality, I'd probably recommend the 50lux for your sanity and the extra stop. Followed by the 50/2zm (priced better then cron and almost equal in every practical way) then 50cron then 50sonnar (unless you want pure character, then the 50sonnar comes first, but you really need to work hard at getting good results with it). The 50APO would top the list, but at the price, the 50/0.95 is just a few grand away, and gives you something you don't get anywhere else. The 50cron is the sharpest lens @ f/2 (after the 50APO). Hope that helps some!

If u really want the 1.4 the 50 lux is by far the best option. But there is a reason the 50 cron is leica's most famous lens, and that after 40 years its still in production.
I used the 50 lux multiple times, but never was really thrilled with it as the 50 noctilux did, or the 50 cron.

First time I took my 50 cron out I was amazed with the sharpness wide open. And I like the hint of classic it has.
The smaller size is a plus to.

Options would be the 50 ZM planar (traded that for the 50 summarit) with is quite similar to the 50 cron, but more modern and a little more hars. More zeiss like colors (thats surprising...)

The 50 summarit is my favorite 50mm lens, if it didn't had the 0,8m minimal focus distance. Absolute awesome picture quality, great build, great use with the focustab, really small and the focusring was the most smooth I ever used.
If u can live with f/2.5 and 0,8m than that one would be my number 1.

So overall, 1.4 if u need it, else I would get the 50 cron unless I can live with 2.5 and 0,8m.
If ur budget isn't that big, I would certainly pick the 50 cron or 50 rit and save the rest for the 28 cron. That one is even more expensive than the 50 lux (good luck telling that at home) but worth every penny.

Thanks guys!

Hilmar - wow, nice find!

Interesting points Robert - I briefly tried the 50 f/2.5 Summarit and thought it was an excellent lens. It seems we easily forget about the Summarit lenses as lesser alternatives because of the price, but having tried the 50 and 75, and owning the 90, I can't say I've been disappointed with any of them.

Regarding the 28 Cron... yes it is more expensive than the 50 Lux ASPH, but it seems to be somewhat of an exception among Leica lenses on the used market, sometimes selling for near $3,000 US while used 50 Luxes are typically within 10% of new... it's just a matter of having the patience waiting for such a sale to appear.

28 Cron, wide open, IIRC:
