Thanks for comments, Charles and Joe.

Joe, I would suggest you have some nice rest instead here

Adam, nice set. thanks for share. but they are too small.

Andy, I have 90 Elmarit, not tele-Elmarit. it is pretty good at f2.8, and extreme good at f4, CA is very minimal even it is not APO. but to be honest, I have find any weak telephoto lens yet, not to mention something from Leica. It really depend on your budget and how often you want use it. 90AA is my dream lens but I have to let it wait since frame and focus error on rangefinder in this focal length is pretty significant, IMO, f2.8 is sweater for keep rate.

Some more to share from Hangzhou Lingyin temple
It was raining hard that day, so most shots I took are from NEX-7 with kit lens, Leica is too delicate for this case

zhangyue - I posted 56 images, figured I'd better make them small for easy loading. Love the atmosphere in your second shot.

Charles, thanks.

Jabberwockt - #9, #10, #11, #28 (both shots)... It's a great lens but a few things to consider.
1) It's big and pretty heavy.
2) It takes a while to get use to the focusing.
3) You're better off with a 90summarit or 75summarit as they're smaller/lighter for travel, and fantastic. I've never had much luck with my tele-elmarit, always found it to hazy (had two copies both mint).. Whereas the summarits are sharp and contrasty on the subject, but hazzy in the background, weird signature, but love it.
But with that said, as Charles mentioned, it's a hard lens to beat optically. So up to you in the end.

Thanks Charles.
Michael, great one of the goldfish (last one of the first set) and like all of the second set. M9 is not too delicate!
Wow Adam, that's an impressive set! Lots to like there, and for me, particularly #13 and 28 - interesting characters in that one... and hats.
Edward, like the first one more.

I'd also like to try the 90AA.... but from my experience with the 90 Summarit, I probably wouldn't use it a lot compared to my other M lenses and the size definitely would be a consideration. And, the 55mm filter size would be the odd one out of the set, since most of what I'm using takes 46mm (though admittedly I hardly ever use filters).

As I think I mentioned, when I was in Munich a couple weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to be able to meet up with Hilmar (seekuh) for a couple hours or so and also borrow his 50 Cron rigid...

So, the following are images from it on the M9, all wide open, IIRC...

And a quick comparison vs. the 50 Lux ASPH, both wide open, Cron first:

100% crops, LR default sharpening:

I like the look of the Cron. It's somewhat lower contrast and less perfect. Unfortunately I didn't try any near-distance subjects..

Thanks Edward. I really love late afternoon autumn light on crisp, clear days...

Since we were discussing 90mm lenses, here are some with the 90 Summarit during the same outing:

This one was considerably underexposed in the foreground to preserve detail in the clouds... it's a bit hazy looking because it started to get foggy.

I second guessed myself after reviewing the above image on the M9's screen and opened up a couple stops for the following shot, but even with some recovery, you can see the clouds have lost some info in the extreme highlights..

And for this one I darkened the exposure one stop after figuring out the sky was a bit too hot...

And the same scene with the 50 Cron rigid:

Hi guys, just a quick question. I recently purchased a 90 summicron 3 cam but I think the lens cap has been lost. Just wondering where I can get a replacement? Im pretty sure its a 48mm filter thread so I should just be able to purchase generic 48mm lens cap for it correct?

Very nice Ron! Nice warmth to those images... That 50cron rigid looks to be a great performer. I wonder what the main differences between it and say a 50cron IV would be? It seems to have some nice character which I like....

That is a R lens is it, then, wrong place to ask. check Adorama, BH and camera west.

+1, I realize it in the trip back to China, Most shots I got from Suzhou, shanghai, Hangzhou area doesn't have good clarity. It might be moisture, dust in the air until later I went to Qingdao, a city along the sea, I got much improved clarity.

Michael, I like the second one... looks like an interesting place. My GF recently suggested we should visit China, but I think her interest is more culinary than photographic...

Forget about this, then you should go, take whatever you individual's need. Though, now days, everything good in China is more expensive than here, food, clothe, camera.... at one store in Suzhou, I find Leica M9 and 50lux on display, and 50lux sell for $45000 yuan, equivalent to $7500 US.

Ron, I enjoy your whole sets. and nice to see some 50cron rigid pictures from you. It seems 50lux slightly sharper at f1.4 than Cron at f2. (That is match my experience)
You are also right about contrast, plus it is flare especially backlit.(I can see a hint of it in your comparison shots with 50lux) However, I really love it, one thing you didn't cover is once stop down, it is extreme sharp lens. Its handling also perfect to my need, I love it as a tool and most time I forget about PixPP as long as it meet my not so high standard threshold on sharpness.

The lens is my most used lens in this trip, though most of my photo load is with 35cron, since a lot 50cron pictures with my kids in it.

More from Lingyin Temple, Hangzhou.

Ron, what great atmosphere, and nice shots as always! The 90summarit also looks like the 75summarit, I love the hazy bokeh!!

zhangyue - I've shot many koi ponds, and I must say, yours is REALLY nice, definitely worth printing big and framing.

Andrew, nice slices of life. I should remember to used my 28 more, it's pretty magical.

edwardkaraa - You're having great luck with the ZM line.. You're making me want to cheat on Leica branded lenses (see below).

---------

Was bored at the start of this week, so I bought myself a 50 Sonnar again to see if I've changed my mind about it. Probably not, as I was frustrated with the focus shift by Wednesday but I love the painterly bokeh.

Ron, great series, and love the lighting and the unique signature of the 50 rigid. The 90 Summarit really shines in your hands
Michael, beautiful set of shots! Truly love the muted lighting and PP'ing in these shots. Would make for a great series on the wall.
Justin, very nice capture!
Andrew, great set of street shots!!! Beautifully presented! The 28 Cron is an amazing lens
Adam, yes there is definitely a love/hate relationship with 50 Sonnar

Thanks guys!

The 50 Cron rigid definitely has an old school quality to it that might be difficult to pick up on in sharpened web-sized images, but is noticeable at full-rez. For a lot of the modern Leica lenses I barely touch the clarity slider, but the 50 Cron can benefit from a generous amount, depending on the desired end result. This of course does change the character of the images, which feel somewhat more malleable than the high contrast rendering of modern glass.

As for the 75 and 90 Summarits.... I've only had brief time with the 75 and feel it's probably a slightly better (sharper) lens with perhaps a touch less CA. But the 90 is definitely very, very good. And for me at least, it's the right focal length and price point.

Michael - I really like this set, especially the second 50 Cron image.
Andrew - great! feels like being there and love the mess of wires in the last image.
Justin - fun image and nice find!

Here are some at the Englischer Garten's Monopteros, a popular vantage point, with the 21 Lux, wide open IIRC...

Third one was cropped a fair amount... All except the last one were exposed for the sky while trying to pull out the foreground info from the deep shadows. Got some banding in the second one...

Adam, thanks for the comment. Indeed I love the rendering of the ZM. However, I am not really keen on the focus shift and "classic" rendering of the Sonnar. I prefer the modern look of the Planar. In fact I have chosen my lenses to give a uniform rendering, and I am a fan of the more "defined" bokeh of Zeiss that some may consider as harsh.

Ron, the last 2 sets are outstanding.
Zhangyue, beautiful shots of China. I love the door shot and the fish close up.
Justin, that photo looks like a classic.
Andrew, excellent street photography as usual.

Ron, first and last shots ::thumbs-up::

Edward, the 50/2 is a great lens, it's on my list of lenses I miss. It's just that I felt the need to play around with the 50sonnar, but again ARGH it's one annoying lens.

I know what you mean, but, according to online samples and user reviews, the Sonnar is much better wide open than the Planar 50/1.4 for SLR. It seems the main problem is the focus shift, and when addressed properly the in focus parts are quite sharp and there is less veiling haze.

Is yours optimized for 2.8?

Thanks for all your comments.

Justin, that is a great one!
Andrew, What a nice set! the 3rd and last one are my favorite.
Ron, again, very nice color under such challenge condition! #1 is my favorite.

Adam, actually, I will recommended sonnar highly. I sold it but if I can sell my lux at $3800, I will keep sonnar. (I don't want more loss on selling things.) My opinion is at f1.5, if you take portrait, the difference between it and lux is hardly noticeable given DOF and focus error. Bokeh might suit my need better. I am not the only one complain 50lux's 'smooth' bokeh I guess Now, the thing is what aperture it optimize at? I prefer at f2.8. I will compensate the focus at f1.5 with 2M. It is pretty easy, just practice a little. Above 2M, most likely, you don't need compensation. if further, it will be within your focus error for RF focusing and DOF will cover FS. You need your shot sharp slow down the lens, you don't need worry FS anymore.

Edward, there is no comparison between it and Planar at WO within 2M. Sonnar has no hazy in center. Infinity might be close.

A quick sample at f1.5

Zhangyue, that is what I was suspecting. The WO shot looks plenty sharp and the bokeh is just about right, smooth, but not too smooth. I don't see any veiling haze too, so I think most of the softness people complain about is caused by focus shift.

Nice set btw, but the b/w shot is my favourite.
