Thank you all for chipping in re: 35mm lens. Sounds like the Biogon wouldn't be such a bad starting price after all, which is reassuring, giving its price. A 35/1.4 Asph would definitely be out of budget for a first lens. Long term, I'd definitely want to keep to one brand for a consistent look, but I guess no harm in starting with something like the Biogon as it wouldn't break the bank.... I could easily fit in an extra WA ZM lens, just there seems to be lacking a fast short tele... Anyone know if Zeiss plan to address this at any point? Or are they happy with just the 85/4?

I did see there is an affordable, older Leica 35/1.4, which seems tiny! But I think I might prefer the higher contrast of the Zeiss in this case.

The older, tiny 35 Lux-M is not all that sharp, has stunningly beautiful boke when conditions are perfect, and horrid, headache-inducing boke in the worst case

Didn't see the odd bokeh. I saw the amazingly bad coma control on digital. I don't dislike the rendering, reminds me of some of my older Minolta glass, I just think I'd prefer the Zeiss to start

Erm, are you referring to the X1, or did I miss something?

Since we are talking about Leica 35mm lenses.Does any one have any shots with the older 35 f2.8 Summaron? Would really like to see some samples from a digital body.

I tried several 35mm M lens. 35 bigon f2.8 (very briefly)35 Biogon f2, 35mm cron V1, and VC35 1.2 V1. In terms of WO at f2, they all about the same in center which is good enough for me. But Cron V1 has bigger sharp circle. Stop down between f2 to f5.6, 35cron and Zeiss almost the same and VC35 slightly lag. after f5.6, zeiss is the sharpest with 35cron very close.

However, 35cron and VC35 doesn't have any focus shift but Zeiss does. i like the 35cron the most as I can place my subject almost anywhere in the frame without worry its resolution at WO. Can you image I prefer almost 40 years design. What a achievement! Also I like it is high resolution but low contrast as well, seems give more headroom for PP. but don't take my word on this, it could be just subjective feeling.

So Jim to answer your question, if 35 mm f2.8 as people said that have better stop down performance even than 35cron V1 8 element. (though I never see real picture to back that up) I would say go for it if price is right. One thing need to be careful is find a better copy with good coating is not that easy, make sure there is no haze. otherwise, the flare will be crazy and clarity will suffer a lot as well. My first 50cron Rigid is bad on this and I have to return to the ebay seller.

Hope this also help Recardo's question about 35mm.

Great shots all

Will catch up later. Meanwhile, here's a high ISO test shot. Zero sharpening. Not too bad.

Nice Joe, so is it a keeper? I think you're the first kid on the block here with an MM.

Thanks Ron, I think its quite an impressive sensor. Need to test it out but ISO10,000 is useable for me, which is nice. As many reviewers have mentioned, the files are very "malleable". Even at ISO10,000 the details are intact and you don't really need sharpening. I used +25 Luminance NR in LR4 on this shot. Noise at ISO10,000 is probably similar to the M9 at ISO2500 but it retains details much better.

I liked the various test photos I saw at ISO 10,000 and also didn't feel additional sharpening really added anything to them. It kind of reminded me of TMAX 3200, though perhaps finer grain.

I'm curious if you run into any banding issues with it. So far this has not come up in any MM reviews I've read. It makes me wonder what exactly has been revised/improved in the MM over the M9, considering they both use the 'same' sensor.

When's the 50AA arriving?

Considering your recent work, it would seem to be the natural progression... (both the MM and the 50AA)

Joe, seriously congratulations on the M-M Very nice examples too, particularly at 10,000 ISO!! I really like the almost like grainy feel to the shot. Imagine that combined with 50 Nocti, and you would need a flash light to be able to focus

Thanks Charles. When is yours arriving? Most dealers in the US only received one copy last week but I think more are on the way next month for those that pre-ordered. No 50AA or Nocti planned for now but if they made a 35Cron AA I would be really interested .

I'll be on the watch out for banding when I shoot some more.. but its a nice feeling, having ISO5,000 or 10,000 on a M body was not possible in the past, so this opens up opportunities for night shooting, stopped down or with longer lenses, very interesting. The grain is very fine and natural looking. I'll try some test prints this weekend at higher ISOs but I don't think it will an issue.

I still think the M9 is a very capable camera, especially at lower ISOs. Here's a few M9 shots taken with the CV 35/2.5 recently in P-town. I don't see the need to upgrade to a M10 at all, at least not for me.

I agree, my eyesight is probably a bigger hindrance to shooting the rangefinder at those high ISOs.

Joe, masterful shots with the M9! The M9 is a great cam, and will be for some time. Your shots on your zenfolio site are excellent. Beautiful B&W conversions. I am really looking forward to more of your shots with the M-M

ISO10000? That looks super clean at the size. Congratulation for the MM. What is your plan? have two M body or keep MM? I envy you

Nice BW set, and first one is awesome. given BW like this, It hard to believe how MM can improve upon

Thanks Charles, Michael!

Charles, don't look at my zenfolio site, its a mess and full of pictures I rather not show
Michael, I'm not sure what I'm going to do, I need to be convinced that the MM is worth keeping as its rather pricey. I have no qualms buying good lenses as they hold their value much better, but cameras will eventually depreciate and leave a hole in my pocket. My plan is to keep the M9 for color and B&W (low ISO) and use the MM for purely B&W days and when the light is low. I think if you shoot the M9 at close to base ISO say 160-400, the files are great and I agree, depending on the type of photography you do, you won't need the MM. I may be wrong but I think probably 80 to 90% of people who will buy the the MM are hobbyist (myself included) or very established B&W pros who can see the benefits. I simply cannot see many regular working photographers who can afford this camera which is a big pity.

As to what I'm seeing so far, I don't really like the way the MM responds to blown highlights, very abrupt cut off, not gentle and very unlike B&W film. Once its gone, its gone and I need to be very careful with exposure and decide how certain loss of highlight details will affect the overall picture. If you look at many examples on Flickr or elsewhere so far, you will see many pictures with blown highlights and it simply kills the picture, at least for me. The cool thing is the RAW histogram has divisions into 10 zones, pretty cool. Just as I had to adapt when moving from the M8 to M9 metering, I think its a matter of having to adapt to the MM. The other negative on the monochrome sensor is that I have to go back to shooting with B&W filters, which can be a nice nostalgic experience but can also be a chore keeping various filters, different sizes, more things to clean, etc.

I'll let you all know how I feel in a few weeks when I have more time for photography.

Meanwhile, looking back at the past few pages,
Paul, I like the picture of the girl in the park shot with the 28Cron, beautiful.
Bruno, really nice deep B&W tones to those shots, nice!
Luka, nice to see you back. Excellent shots as always! Love that first industrial shot with hints of yellow on p557. The X1 still looks very capable. Not upgrading to the X2?
Charles, ditto with you Bangkok Nocti series, excellent work as always!
Doug, two very nice B&W shots a few pages back with the 90 Summarit.
Seekuh, that's an excellent vacation shot! Congrats on being shortlisted!
deang001, nice set from Dubai.
Michael, love the colors from your film set. The red line composition is excellent! Were these Costco scans?

Joe, Thanks for the write up. I agree this MM body is niche of the niche I think good thing about it is Leica can keep it in their product line for a long time like MP?

I feel it won't outdated for a long time. As myself, I don't see I will buy one unless for 2nd M body, which is too much for me. I fully agree with you this is for hardcore M user and BW aficionado as well as 2nd body for established Leica user. a very good one.

I can see its SNR/ISO advantage and benefit easily, and know resolution advantage ( but for the way Leica shooting (never tripod), I doubt the sharpness difference will be shown at regular shooting condition ) And for BW, we also loose digital filter of M9, which is a pity IMO. Still, I would say this is close to perfect tool for BW shooter.

I looks forward to more from you and Charles's picture.

BTW, yes, all scan from Costco before I am really into film, I haven't had time to invest/research scanner yet

Thanks Charles, Taylor & Joe

Charles, that 24 Elmarit is so good that I always keep it on the X1.

Joe, congrats on the MM! And great M9 set as well #3 is my favorite

Speaking of the MM, I was inspired to do a little test of my own - M9 @ ISO10,000. In short, shoot at ISO2500 under exposed by two stops and then pushed two stops to ISO10000 in post.
I just used the green channel (twice the photo sites = least noise) - it's possible that one could to something clever by averaging the R, G & B channels.

Anyway:

It's hardly a scientific comparison but it looks to me like the M9 shot has noticeably more noise in the shadows than the MM examples above..
