Gary - looking good. I like the first and the third, which has nice separation from the background. Also like the second and third of your previous set a page back.

Some more from downtown Hamilton last week..

M9 with 90 Summarit, 50 Lux x2, 28 Cron x2.

Catching up on images on the previous page:

Michael - great light in both of those and love your daughter's expression.
Charles - Tainan looks to have some interesting old sections. I'll have to check it out if I'm ever back there again. BTW, the only time I've ever experienced blue skies in Taiwan was on the east coast and at the southern tip at Kenting. West coast has always been white sky with hazy sun. But that provides opportunities in itself with reduced harshness that would otherwise be a problem with direct sun. Very nice capture of your god daughter - great feel and expression.
Joe - excellent B&Ws again! Really like the one of the school kids and the third one of the shinkansen. Again the layers..

Thanks Ron Tainan definitely had unusual lighting, compared to other Asian countries. Bright, hazy, when it was not raining, but still fine for shots. Unlike here in Australia, when the sun is out the lighting is just plain harsh!
Very nice set of shots, and I do prefer the B&W shots particularly with the strong design composition
Gary, nice shots! I do like the CV 50/1.5 lens, as it is sharp, cost effective and no focus shift, even though the lens has been discontinued.

Those are great Ron! I generally think the color treatments are better than B&W - The green and orange plus all that great natural grey really work for me. Having said that, I love the last one, and think B&W is probably the right way to go for it.

Thanks for comments. Charles, Ron, Andrew, Joe.

Adam, Good luck with your decision and look forward to see your works here. I agree 28cron and 50lux are hard to beat. However, I will be as happy to have Zeiss Sonnar and some ZM lens like 35f2 or 25f2.8. I don't think performance wise, ZM are lacking. I even feel Zeiss have better coating and T stop. If Budget is not a concern, go with Leica is always safer choice

Ron, those are great shots. Color and contrast are just beautiful. Last one is 3D.
Joe, Those B&W from Japan are awesome shots. I love them all. you PP them in LR or use SEP?
Gary, The first tree shot has very nice rendering. and the CV35 shots from previous page are nice too!
Charles, I like first street shot of 24lux very much. your god daughter like a little angel.
lovinglife, the last B&W one is nice.

A portrait by 50lux WO, It was slightly missed focused. There are others in focus but I like this frame better. Window light in the morning before work. My son was hit on his face on desk when he play with his sister before this capture.

This one is after work tonight. 50lux WO.

zhangyue - FANTASTIC, I actually like a lot of your 50lux shots, and I think you also use a CV35 right?

Charles - I'm back, picked up an M9p today, along with a 35/2 ZM just so I could see if I liked the FL or not (honestly can't remember if 35mm on RF is something I like or not). Honestly though, if I did buy a 35, I'd get the 35 1.4 ASPH pre-FLE, because from all the shots I've seen that looks like one killer lens (I'm just a bit concern about focus shift issues).

rscheffler - Yeah, I was thinking go 28cron or bust.. Because I remember really not loving the 28ultron. The same people that are temping you, are temping me (plus now I've added you to the list of temptation photographers). I really still don't know what I want to do lens wise..

BTW, I took a few shots with the M9p just testing it out, and honestly I remember what I don't like about it.. The fact that the camera is slow at processing the preview, the fact that the camera is slow in general. The LCD screen still sucks and I'm having a hard time adjusting to the focusing and I still can't seem to produce clean files This is going to be fun!!

Quick picture of my dog trying to eat my durians. My only model for today with the 35/2 ZM:

Thank Michael Magical shots of your son, particularly the last shot!

Adam, congrats on the M9-P and ZM 35/2 Nice capture I have not been able to really acquire the taste for durian...yet! The ZM 35/2 is a very nice lens.

Yes the M9's do have their quirks, but to be honest it has slowed my thinking down in taking shots, to where I feel I enjoy photography more. My number 1, gripe would be the processing speed. Everything else I don't really notice, even the LCD, as I don't rely on it so much now. In many ways I became too reliant on the LCD with DSLR's, rather than concentrating on technique.

Charles, I agree with you on that.. But it's been so long since I used an M9 that I've forgotten all the little quirks that make it so frustrating when trying to get back into the groove of it. I've turned off the LCD and I just leave it at that.. On a more functional note, a meter scale would probably make it ideal for me, as I've developed a good grasp of EV comp. and being able to do it on the M9 with my eye to the viewfinder in M mode would be fantastic.

Honestly though, I don't mind. And will just use it as I've mentioned for fun/travel. See where it takes me.

As far as durians are concern, you really need to have a good durian before you can make up your mind on them. But some people just can't handle the smell, or really just don't have a taste for them. I find it funny that I'm seeking them out the second they come into season.

Best,
ADam

Thanks guys.

Taylor - thanks for the feedback. I was torn between full B&W treatment or partial. It was near sunset and the warm light made the concrete walls look dirty, and the shaded areas were very blue. I found the colours distracting and went for keeping just the green of the grass and the orange of the ceramic tubes/pipes, but for some full B&W just seemed better. I'm kind of allergic to dirty looking neutrals, or what I would expect to be neutral, which includes concrete.

Michael - lovely portraits, especially the second one!
Adam - looks good! The durians sure look like some alien pod about to pop open, haha..

Completely agree here. DSLRs made me accustomed to instant feedback and developed the habit of immediately checking results. Part of that was also the tendency for AF inconsistency and wanting to ensure I had correct focus because it was very difficult to confirm this by eye on the focusing screen, especially with wide angle lenses. This became a hyper acute problem while using the Canon 1DIII cameras, which I loved for everything except AF, and therefore became extremely paranoid about AF consistency.

What I've found with the M9 is that I have gradually weaned myself from the need/desire to confirm focus through image review. During my initial time with it I was always zooming in to check focus. I think this was inevitable because I didn't have a real feel for how critical I would need to be with RF focusing. Over time I also became more familiar with how the RF worked with each of my lenses. And, following calibration at Leica, I'm now at the point where I'm confident about focus accuracy with my fast lenses, such as the 50 Lux. If I add any new lenses, I'll probably have an adjustment period with that lens until I feel comfortable with it (was very close to buying a 90AA recently, but ultimately decided against it). It also took a while to accept that I didn't need to be accurate with RF focus unless shooting at or near wide open and with longer lenses. There is a certain freedom in shooting a bit stopped down and only needing to be in the ballpark. In that respect I find the system to be very fast (assuming the darned camera isn't asleep and I forgot to wake it). I have also become accustomed to the buffer limit and know that I can quickly shoot around 5 images without worry. But if I anticipate drawn out action, then I will have to make a decision whether to shoot more initially or hold off a bit for the action to possibly develop into something more interesting. That is where I most want to see Leica improve performance, which hopefully will be the case with the M10. While I doubt Leica will do it for the M9, I would probably pay for a buffer upgrade if they offered it.

No comment really from me about durians. I've had them. The taste was not bad, but yeah, the smell... There may be some parallels with stinky tofu, which I actually like the taste of, but again, the smell... Isn't there a law in Singapore about durians?

M9 & 21 Lux, 50 Lux for second and last. I think all were wide open. The 21 Lux does sharpen up a bit centrally at f/2, but it is surprisingly quite good across the frame wide open, not that you can really tell at web rez.

Thanks Charles, Ron, Michael

LL, congrats on your 35 FLE. Nice shots!
Gary, excellent set with the CV 50/1.5. I've had this lens in the past on my M8 and really enjoyed it. Smooth and sharp and quite a bargain for a fast 50mm.
Ron, excellent texture and composition with the Hamilton "hole" set, 2nd and 3rd are my favorites. Love those diagonal compositions on the second set.. 1,4 & 5 are my favorites. The layering on #1 is most excellent!
Michael, love that portrait of your son! I think capturing these little "incidents" will make these family pictures even more memorable when you look at them 10 to 20 years later.
Adam, congrats on your M9P. Durians, yummy, king of fruits! I once sat next to a British gentlemen on a plane and when we talked durians, he said, "You actually like eating turpentine?"

------------
Surprisingly, I only had one major issue with my M9, some of you may know from my earlier posts, a faulty LCD which was replaced under warranty. 18 months on, and I haven't had any other major issues (touch wood) other than small niggles such as camera not switching on when I tried to switch it on and off in succession quickly, rectified by removing the battery and also dead pixels which I have not bothered to fix as LR4 takes care of them. The biggest gripe I have is the X#$@ dust on the sensor. Blower doesn't get rid of the dust and liquid always makes it worse. I have tried other cameras recently but always fall back on the Leica M. Even with some of its quirks, its just such a simple camera and gets out of the way, at least most of the time.

Michael, for B&W I currently use SEP2 and finish off with LR4. Currently working with the zones in SEP2 to make sure I get sufficient blacks using the contrast slider and then fine tuning with the midtones, structure and spot adjustments. I also selectively use the yellow filter to get some separation on the skin tones or foliage when required. I find the zonal tool in SEP2 really helps me to fine tune the whites and blown highlights, else I'll have problems with the whites on my prints. After exporting back to LR4, I'll make the final adjustments, normally to adjust the blacks and recheck for blown highlights if required after making a test print.

After 2 years with the M9, I'm still adjusting and trying to learn and improve my B&W pp, with prints being my final reference. I still love the tonality of B&W film but am willing to sacrifice the final 10-15% and use digital nowadays because its just more convenient for me, although I have to admit I still keep a fridge full of Tri-X and Neopan when I need a fix

I do not have an issue with my 50Cron V5, price-wise or performance wise. For me, size and weight is important, my preference is normally to go out with one camera and lens, with a 28 or 35FL my main choice, but a 50Cron, especially with the built in hood, fits into a pocket easily when I need more reach But I do agree with everyone else here that the ZM lenses are all excellent lenses, especially considering their price point.

On the way to catch our train to Kyoto, its just past 5am on a weekday and the platforms in Shinjuku is already filling up.

rscheffler - Lovely colors!! You know, I've been to HK tons of times, never tried the stinky tofu, always wanted to. As far as laws are concern, no durians in airports, on buses or trains. Some taxi's don't allow durians, but it's a real pastime here. Young and old, rich and poor gather in empty parking lots to eat durians from one enterprising fellow or another who's gotten a license to sell durians out of the back of his truck. The good ones will run you $50-$80 a kilo including shell and seeds (which make up 70% of the weight of the fruit). It's funny how I'll walk into a Japanese grocery store and laugh at the $80 dollar melons or $100 grape vines, but I'll happily fork out for durians!
Anyway, I have a horrible sore throat from eating them! One of the drawbacks.

joe88 - it really kinda smells/tastes like turpentine. In fact if you don't wash your hands well enough right after eating them, you'll smell like gasoline for the next few days. Sigh, I'm glad they are only worth eating a month out of the year.

Reading your post, I'm curious if you think that an M9m might be the way to go? I was actually considering it, since the M9 isn't a bread n butter tool, but thought I'd miss color to much if I was on vacation.

You make me miss Japan, if you post pictures of ramen shops I might just have to take a trip

Best,
ADam

So... The 75 summicron asph vs the 75 summarit. I've read a bunch, and seen some reviews, all seem to say the summarit is great.

So any reasons to get the summicron over it?
I'm thinking of buying the 75cron, wanna know why I should

The Summicron is probably better at close distances due to the FLE. At least the Summarit I've tried was not very good at MFD (compared to the 90mm AA, 90mm Macro and Lux 50). Besides this the bokeh of the Summicron seems a bit smoother. In every other aspect the Summarit is probably at least as good as the Summicron.

The 75 Summicron is a very nice lens. Excellent ergonomically in your hands, MFD of 0.7m, and easy to focus. Another reason why I usually opt for the 75mm's rather the 90 Cron, is that the frame lines seem nicely balanced to what you see, and what is outside of the lines. The 90 FL frame lines seem too small, to compose the shots as easily IMO. Don't get me wrong, I love the 90 Cron AA The 75 Cron/Lux I find make for excellent portrait lenses on the RF. With DSLR's though, I prefer longer, 105 to 135 ideally for portaits.
