p.483 #1 · Leica M/X/T/S/Q/CL/SL Picture Thread

Hi guys, long time no chat... Lots of great new work, 100 over pages since I've last been here!

Decided to take a break after my second M9 became problematic for the second time and had to be sent to Germany again for two over months!
Sold it off, and haven't looked at this forum for months from that point. Then last week while I was bored I started looking, seen so many great shots that I started to have the urge to buy another M9 (would be the 3rd one!) I blame all of you, you know who you are

Anyway, seriously considering another M9, after only a week of restless sleep, but I haven't fully decided what I wanna do yet. I've already started planning on not going overboard this time. So I wanna keep my Leica kit to two lenses ONLY. I know I could buy more, but I've made a promise to myself that if I did buy another M9, I would buy two Leica lenses, and would limit myself to them, and that I would use my DSLR/MFD gear for work ONLY. So the Leica would be my fun/vacation camera.
Why limit myself to two lenses? Because l'm a mass consumer that needs to set boundaries or else I go way overboard

With that in mind, before I run to the Leica shop and buy an M9, what are the pros and cons to buying the following sets:

35 summicron ASPH or 35 Lux pre-FLE + 75/2 APO or 75 2.5

OR

28 Summicron + 50 summicron or 50 summilux

OR

50 cron or 50 lux + 90 APO

Or any combo (2) of the lenses mentioned above..

Keep in mind at one point or another I've either tried or owned these lenses.. I really have no opinions on what to shoot (since I do it for work, I don't really care when I'm out having fun w/a camera), I kinda just shoot what I can, with the lenses I have.. For instance, I once took a 21ZE and 50MPZE to a beach resort, honestly didn't really miss my other lenses.. And recently I took a trip and packed only my 85 and again, didn't really miss my other lenses. Not because I don't like to shoot other FLs, but because I was trying to just say screw it, it's for fun, don't be so serious, and I kinda just went with it. The only thing I kinda hate is when I don't have enough light to shoot and my camera becomes a door stop (to be honest though, f/2 to f/1.4 really doesn't make a whole lot of difference in the grand scheme of things).. And most places I go are sunny

I guess a lot of this is personal preference, but if you needed to pick two lenses to do a wide variety of interesting shots, what would they be and why?

Thanks guys, I hope my next Leica doesn't bugger up on me!

Best,
Adam

I love 50 mm, but 35+75 must be the most versatile combo. 28 Cron + 50 Lux on the other hand, buys you (almost) technical perfection.

Does it have to be two lenses? What about a 28mm elmarit, 50'lux, and 90,cron?

Thanks for the kind words Gary, Charles, Andrew. Much appreciated!

Charles, the Nocti is magical for these type of shots! Beautiful, dreamy and classic looking. Make sure you make an archival print of it for her parents!

Gary, excellent set with the CV35 II. This lens seems to have it all, creamy rendering wide open on that last shot and tack sharp stopped down.

Adam, as to your lens choices, what is your favorite focal length? I ask because I think personally I would first choose a focal length that I'm comfortable shooting as a one lens kit first then pair a second lens to that combination. To most M shooters, I would say 35 or 50 would be the first choice, then it depends if you want to go wide or tele on the second lens. Makes sense?

35 + 75 would make a great 2 lens kit, plus the 75 APO allows closer focus (0.7m) for portraits. As to cron vs lux, size vs how often do you use f/1.4? If you don't mind the slightly larger size of the Lux, I would go with it as this would provide "insurance" when you need low light or shallow DOF. For about the same price as the 75Cron, you could also consider a good used copy of the 75Lux, another magical lens.

28 + 50 would also make a great kit too, especially if you enjoy shooting 50 as your main setup. 50 Cron or Lux? I think 95% of shooters would tell you the Lux if you are looking for perfection but I personally enjoy shooting the 50Crons, smaller, lighter and renders beautifully in a classic way but still sharp enough, although the 50Cron can flare if you need it for technical shots, especially if you use studio flash.

50 + 90 - I'm not too sure about how often you will use the 90 APO as although its a great lens, it could be kind of limited because its quite difficult to focus wide open. Coupled to the poor high ISO on the M9, it makes it not that practical for low light use.

I would go for the 35/75 pairing, and then I'm sure at some point you will add a third or fourth lens Good luck

Edit: If you are already considering the 75 AA or 90AA or any of the Lux, why not go for an almost perfect 3 lens combo? You can always leave one lens at home, ie
35/50/(75 or 90) - skip the 75/90 AA and go for a 75/90Summarit and the remainder of the funds could go for a 35/50 Cron or Lux combo, else
28/50/(75 or 90) - another well loved combo, 28Cron, 50Cron or Lux and either 75/90 Summarit

-------
Here's a set with the 50CronV5 and 90AA, on our way from Tokyo to Kyoto on the shinkansen. I love shooting in Japan, such as beautiful country and people are generally very polite and helpful. Plus, our hotel in Tokyo was smack in camera central Shinjuku. At night, I'll sneak out to Yodabashi camera and fondle with all the D4, D800, 5Ds, X Pro, OM-Ds etc, etc. I was hoping to pick up some gear here but everything is much more expensive than back in the US.

M9 #1 & 5 90AA, 2,3 & 4 50Cron

There is no shortcuts, you need to wait for a better light

I agree that one usually ends up with better results if they wait for that golden light... The problem is that street shooting (especially in SE Asia) does not lend itself to waiting around for good light. It is often hazy, overcast, smoggy, etc. The white sky in these types of shots doesn't bother me at all.

Tell me about it... That's one of the main reasons why I don't shoot for fun anymore. I've been strictly work shooting for the past couple of months (unless away from S.E.A.). The golden hour here is actually 20 minutes at best, and only a few lucky days a month.

Good points so far... Just to clear things up, I really don't have a preferred focal length, or lengths. For weddings I shoot 35 and 85 almost exclusively (unless indoors in low light, then 24-70+speedlight). But that's only because I have two cameras attached to myself, and need the most versatile combo that gives me XX type of results without having to switch lenses.. Though honestly I'm always really tempted to attach the 24mm or the 50mm I just refrain from doing so to save myself the trouble.

When shooting studio work, I don't see much of a difference between primes and zooms (nothing that would bother the client and cause me to skip on the 24-70 or 70-200).

So really, I'm very unbiased in my approach, as long as I stick with two lenses.

Joe88 - great shots BTW, I like Japan!

Just a thought, would it be crazy of me to get a 75cron and then a 50lux... I mean, are they so close that it makes no sense?

I've been on flickr all day looking through the 6 or so lenses I mentioned... Trying to see if anything stands out!

I think if you are using a 50/75 combo for work, it might be too close and you might miss having something wider for when you need more background, DOF or for shooting larger groups, but then again, will you still have your DSLR kit with you when you absolutely need to use one?

My two favorite lenses by far. I would add the 90 cron if you shoot a lot of portraits
or 21 SE if you want wide.

Yeah, DSLR/MFDB is a must for work.. Leica is purely for play/travel, so I won't be bringing my DSLR on trips with me anymore. It doesn't really make me happy anymore to do so.

Thank you Joe Great shots, love the way you use the 50 Cron V5. Amazing rendering!

Adam, welcome back If you are looking to a two lens kit, the 28 Cron and 50 Lux Asph is a great choice. For travel however, I like the Lux's for low light and subject separation when needed, so I would almost err to having 35 Lux FLE and 50 Lux Asph. The 35 Lux FLE, would probably stay on your M9, 85% of the time, and you could then use the 50 Lux Asph for more your portrait work when needed. For more landscape/scenery shots the 28 Cron is brilliant, and of course you don't need an external finder. The reasoning for compressing the FL's to a narrower range on the M9, is that it just seems to work better, rather for example using a 90 Cron AA for quick focusing. The 75 Cron and Lux are also much easier to nail focus, and have a MFD of 0.7m, which really negates the advantage in the FOV for using the 90mm FL.

With respect to calibration, there are no shortcuts here, but I will say most repair centers have really improved their ability to calibrate both the lenses and M9's now. The 28 Cron will rarely have a calibration issue. I don't know why, but they do not. Also the 35 Cron Asph, are great too with respect to focusing being spot on. I have had no experience with the 50 Cron's ... yet

PP'ing has now greatly improved with LR 4.1/CS6 with much better algorithms, than in LR3/CS5, and I am not using C1 Pro any longer. It is much simpler and quicker work flow which adds to the fun of it all. Good Luck!!!

Hi Charles, thanks for the tips! I'm actually leaning towards the 28cron - 50lux, and since nobody seems to have objections with those two lenses being all rounders, I think I need to start making calls.

The problem for me was never calibration, although it's good to know that the leica staff are getting training for local adjustments.. My problem was always something greater and more devastating happening to the M9.. I'm wondering if all the kinks have been worked out for the M9p, or if it's just purely cosmetic?!

Best,
Adam

Adam, be great to see back in the forum Great choice! I have a M9-P, and one of the original M9's second hand, and only issue I have had with either body is the RF calibration. I also had some dead pixels, but this was quickly fixed with remapping, and can be quite common with a lot of air travel with any digital sensor.

My vote is also 28 Cron/50 Lux. Of my current 21/28/50/90 daily-use kit, the two middle lenses are by far the most used. As you know, Leica M lenses are as small as they realistically can be, and even this four lens kit with body is very portable, fitting in a satchel that otherwise could only hold a 70-200 2.8 lens.

If size is a factor, and you want a small 50, I would suggest looking at the 50 Summarit. From the limited time I had with one, it was a very nice performer. The 50 Cron I just have a difficult time liking. Not due to image quality, which seems top notch, but rather it seems quite well matched by the ZM50P for less than half the price. Though double the Cron's price, I have less difficulty justifying to myself the merits of the 50 Lux. And the extra stop really does come in handy at that focal length.

When I first got my M9 I noticed a number of hot pixels in the Jpeg files. I was a bit concerned about this, but found that LR seems to process these out from RAW conversions, and I haven't given it a second thought since. But yes, knock on wood for reliability. I must be past 50K now and hopefully it continues without issue. Lately the shutter cocking system has sounded a bit different, as though the gears weren't meshing quite as they should.

M9/35 Summilux FLE

Kinda on the fence regarding the 35 FLE, the rendering on the older one with it's imperfections were nice for me..this one is just a little too perfect.

One of the sharpest lenses i've ever used though...viewed 100% wide open its brutally sharp.

Hahaha thanks!

Yeah, I've had a whole host of issues. Not really gonna get into it, I think I've already bitched enough over the last two years. I didn't know that going through airports can cause dead pixels, or cause mapping to fail (whatever it is that actually happens when you travel).

Well, hopefully I'll be able to get ahold of a M9 or M9p relatively quickly. N lenses are another matter all together. But figured I'd start now, so I know what to shop for when the time came. Rather then impulse buying a bunch of gear (like usual) and then being overwhelmed so much so that I don't use anything.. N end up selling it all off.

Best,
Adam

rscheffler - Tend to agree with you on the summicron 50, it's really just hard to justify paying more then double (in singapore) for it over the 50/2 ZM. I found that I used the 50zm more when I had it, then I did the summicron (and I tried a few versions of the summicron, current, one before current, really old one). The 50 1.5 ZM is fun, but not something I'd want in a two lens kit.

Size isn't a factor at all.. I've taken trips with just a DSLR and 1 lens, and I've taken trips with a DSLR 3 zooms 5 primes (stupidly excessive, but I've done it for long 30d USA trips). It's not so much size, it's just that I find I have less fun when I'm obsessing over which lenses to bring, and which one to use etc etc.. So I want to try and ZEN my life (I'm selling off all my excess work gear as well), but I figured if I only had 1 lens, I might as well just buy the X2 (looks sexy around the neck, saves me a lot of money). So that's when I decided to go with a two lens kit

I suppose that leaves the 50lux ASPH if I go with the 28/50.

The 28cron, nobody seems to be saying anything bad about it. My only hesitation with the whole 28/50 combo is that I had a 28ultron, and really didn't like the FL on a range finder, but going back over the photos I took.. Maybe I just didn't like the lens. I used my friends 28cron briefly, but on vacation where everything's more interesting, (so it's really hard because of the vacation bias).

Though on flickr I found that I liked a lot of shots with the 28cron, 50lux, 35cron, 75cron.

lovinglife - It took me a long while to realize that when shooting for fun, sharpness isn't top priority. But I don't know enough about the FLE to really comment on which lens I like better mood wise.. I'd say if you're bored with the FLE images because they're to sharp and perfect, then go back to the non-FLE... Though I hear the non-FLE has focus shift issues, and I know that can be a pain in the ass, as the 50 1.5 ZM had focus shift issues and it always annoyed me.

Best,
Adam

Having briefly used a 28 f/2 Ultron, I would say there is no comparison to the 28 Cron, which has great contrast, saturation and excellent sharpness from wide open. The Ultron takes a long time to sharpen into the corners, if you need that, whereas the Cron is great across the frame by f/4. Also no focus shift. Not that the Ultron is terrible, just not at the same level. I believe Michael (zhangyue) has the Ultron and he's posted very nice image with it, so it will depend on your needs/expectations.

I think I can understand where you're coming from about 28mm in general. It was about my last choice in focal lengths for my M kit and on SLRs was never a prime focal length I owned or desired because it was too middling. My thought was always that I would rather have 20/24 or 35/50. Perhaps it was also because Canon didn't offer anything interesting at 28mm. But 28mm on the M is growing on me. Sometimes I will wish I had brought along a 35mm, but that seems to occur fairly infrequently. 28 is wide enough for a lot of in-close environmental situations without being too wide. It allows a comfortable working distance without excessive WA distortion. Wide open, the lens retains very nice subject isolation and background blur, especially at near distances. I probably would have passed on the 28 Cron if Charles and Luka hadn't posted so many compelling images with it. I think what I like about it is it doesn't really have any glaring weaknesses to work around (assuming you don't mind vignetting, which to me is part of its appeal). You can just use it and get great results, whether it's at f/2 or f/8, near or far, backlit, overcast, full sun....
