Michael - love the shots of your kids, particularly the B/W on the prior page. The 50 Lux is pretty fun, huh? I also really like the last shot you posted with the green/red umbrellas, too bad they weren't spaced out a little more
Hilmar - great set from Thailand, the 50 Noct shots are impressive
Charles - more excellent work from the temple.....the portraits are very nice!

I've never seen a satisfying explanation for purple fringing and why it only shows up on digital. Whatever the cause, it's pretty nasty looking.
The explanation is simply chromatic aberration and it does show up on film. However, the effect seems more pronounced with digital, presumably because of higher sensitivity to the infrared and/or ultraviolet wavelength regions.
I have never seen a satisfactory explanation for purple fringing being due to the sensor, and why it disappears as you reduce the lens aperture.
Certainly chromatic aberration shows up on film, but I've never seen the purple fringing around highlights on film. Not saying I've seen every picture out there You've obviously studied aberrations more than I have, so I'll defer to you. I would love to see examples of it on film though.
I have seen explanations for why it's not a lens aberration but a sensor phenomenon, but that obviously doesn't mean they are valid. They make sense in a hand-wavy manner, but that's about it.

Same here. I've seen plenty of CA on film but never this kind of fringing (looks more blue than purple to me). would love to see some samples too. The one you show on your website looks more like red/cyan CA to my eyes.

The precise color depends of course on the lens correction and the response of the sensor/film. I have a few examples on film, but the Epson scanner that I use these days also has CA, so that would not make a convincing illustration. There are of course examples on the web.
Anyway, the lens can explain everything. On the other hand I don't know much about sensor technology, and I suppose it is possible that a digital sensor introduces effects that resemble chromatic aberration of the lens. The point is that I have never seen a credible explanation.
Thank you everybody for commenting. Much appreciated!
rsolti13, I like 2, 3 and 4. Very, very nice tones and excellent processing.
zhangyue, very nice set, too. My preference is the last one. - Yes, the Noct .95 is a self-portrait in the railway station.
Sorry everybody, can't currently comment on all your photos, need to do some (real) work now.

Perhaps TheSuede can fill us in.

Those examples are radically different that the kind of situations we'te shooting in. For example, there is massive PF with the Noct ASPH on the M9 and NONE on film. Why is that?
Nate, Nice capture, Do you purposely tilt it to right?
Ryan, Nice series with 75lux. In first set, I like 1 and 2. That is very difficult lighting, but you handle it pretty good. 2nd set, I like the green hat shot and last two B&W ones.
I agree with your comment about those two ladies with red and green umbrella. I did have the chance. I was trying to take some picture around and find those two ladies half way through, I realize those colorful umbrella have very good contrast to the almost mono color architecture. There is only 20 sec, and I am later once I figured I need take the shots. That is what they call decisive moment, I missed
Seekuh, I like the mood of #1. #2 has very interesting compose. And I think the flare shot could be also very interesting if showing larger.
Kelly, A very nice portrait with excellent clarity. Is that taken with Lux or cron?

No, although I did break my leg a couple of months ago and have been limping. Who knows, but it's not intentional. It also has no bearing on the content of the picture. Looking through any good book and I see most the pictures are crooked and no one cares, especially not the photographer.
My M9 has had it's junky covering peeling off since the day I pulled it new out of the box. I just received my Cameraleather.com order on Monday, 3 months after placing my order and it sure looks and feels better with it's new skin.

Uh. Purple fringing around highlights captured with large-aperture photographic lenses. How is that different?
To answer that question, we would need to compare the chromatic correction of that lens with the spectral response of the two media.
i've seen some pretty severe PF on film with the leica R 350/4.8. i'm pretty sure i've seen some with the CV 35/1.4 on film in other peoples shots as well. i think digital does definitely amplify it somehow, but it is definitely present on film as well.
Something a bit different, shots from a contemporary dance rehearsal. Very low light - I shot at ISO1600 but had to push the images about 2 stops in post.
Kelly, very cool dog capture!! Welcome anytime here in Oz!
Ryan, excellent series, in particular the B&W really stand out
Michael, great first shot! Love the composition and abstract design! Very nice set of your kids!
Nate, another very nice shot! Must take a shot of the new redressed M9
Contas, nice bike!!!
Luka, excellent low light shots! Superb series!! Great to see you back
