Charles, the 24Lux landscape orientation portrait of the 2 guys on the truck is AMAZING! I want to see more, more more!

This lens is seriously incredible. However, let's not underestimate the skills of the photographer

Quick question, is the vignetting natural, or did you apply it in post?

I'm bringing you a video that might interest you. I'm a M8 and M9 user myself.

Maybe most of you don't know but about 90% of the Leica M9 and other Leica products is actually made in Portugal, despite the Made in Germany on the camera. This video shows the inside of the portuguese factory, where about 650 people work. This is from a portuguese TV program, so all the audio is in Portuguese...but maybe you would like to take a look. It's around 9 minutes.

Regarding the M9, the factory makes 1200 a year, according to what they say.

Here's the video:

haha...sorry but they don't talk about future products at all. It's just a portrait of the company considered a success story in Portugal in time of crisis

Thanks for sharing, Mauri. Does the factory make also the M lenses, or just the the body? The video shows machines for grinding lenses, but I wasn't sure if they talked about lens or binoculars production.

Charles, she does look familiar... very nice! Is that IR bleed in the color of the fabric?
Mauri - I'll check that out. I don't think it's a secret about M9 assembly in Portugal, but I think they make more than 1200 a year. Haven't they sold over 30,000 already?

I photographed a minor league hockey tournament today for editorial purposes, and brought along the M9 and a few lenses. The Canon was used for action and telephoto work, though those aren't shown here. Also, some of these have been cropped.

All were with the 21 Lux between wide open and f/2.8, except for the one looking down on the three helmets, which was the 28 Cron. At close quarters, the depth of field with the 21 Lux is quite shallow and focus still needs to be done carefully, as I keep rediscovering...

Gary, Siddhu and Ron, thank you guys
Siddhu, your comments are much appreciated! The 24 Lux did have some vignetting added.
Mauri, thanks for sharing! Maybe we get inside info on the latest on May 10
Ron, excellent series! Working magic with the 21 Lux I have not notices any IR bleed, or least what my eyes perceived. The black was not black in with a lot of reflected lighting

Thanks Charles. I see deep shades of purple/magenta in her top.
Thanks Hilmar! I could post those later Sunday... though honestly don't find them all that exciting - just some so-so action shots.

One of the kids, when he saw the Leica asked me if it was a difficult camera to use, because that's what it looked like to him. I suppose in some respects it can be a difficult, or unforgiving camera, but it's the simplicity of it that's so welcome for me. And with the 21 Lux, f/1.4 and ISO 640 seems to make a nice combo, with workable shutter speeds in most normal-ish indoor lighting conditions. The M9 files are still pretty smooth at that ISO and the slight glow of the lens wide open results in a nice combo, IMO. I think my favourite image of the set is the second, of the players in red waiting to go out on the ice. I love how the two boys in the foreground seem to stand out nicely. Who would have thought you could get this kind of separation from a 21mm lens?

Lenses as well. They actually talk about 15.000 of them in the last year but I have no idea which ones, if not all. You can see someone working on them for a few seconds in the video

Nate: Your last two pictures from Burma you posted here are truly outstanding regarding composition, content and apt/cautious PP. (Insert a big thumbs up here!!)

(IMHO you might tilt the last one a bit to the left in order to straighten the horizon.)

Thanks all. As for the horizon, yeah maybe I should fix that. Thanks for the input.

Charles, love those excellent compositions on your last street set, especially the first shot, so much going on there! Also, nice model with the 75Lux

Ron, I haven't had time to shoot much but will give the 90AA a try when time permits. This lens is definitely very suitable for technical shots and stills where the long focus throw helps you to be more precise with focusing wide open whereas the 90Summarit is more suitable for moving subjects, in my opinion. I tried taking pics of moving kids with the 90AA up close and it is very difficult to focus, by the time I turn the focus ring, the kids have disappeared. I haven't tried the Zeiss but your sample shot looks good. Its probably me, but for the price of a new 85 Sonnar, I probably would stretch for a 90AA, coded, good resale value, etc. I recall you had the ZM 85/4? How was that lens? BTW, those editorial shots look great. Hard to pick a favorite. Good use of the 21 FL!

Nate, another beautiful composition!

Here's one with the 35Lux ASPH v1 without the hood. During a meeting with my colleagues. I think the flare from the OHP works on this shot. Does it look somewhat like a familiar scene to you all?

Ron, just some more remarks on your great photos:

Number 1) Was it taken with fill flash or is it just available light). I like your way of processing. Blacks are blacks and everything is very sharp and crisp. Did you edit a lot in PP?

Did you stage the right kid?

No. 2) Beautiful composition. Like that the kids are in the lower part and that there is a lot of the environment visible.

No. 3) A perfect photo. Like the way the guy is holding the winner's cup.

No. 4) Looks like staged (just one kid looking into the camera). Excellent.

No. 5) Excellent composition and so smooth.

No. 6) Feel as if I were part of the action.

No. 7) Hockey is very rewarding. Seems as if they burned many calories. ;-))

No. 8) Action shot. You must have been quick with focusing. Stunning shot.

No. 9) Like the composition again. Great, great work.

I'm still amazed by your work. Outstanding.

Joe, cool image! Either there's an alien presence or it's a biblical reference.... Last supper perhaps? This is one of those happy accidents with a rangefinder because you can't see it before hand.

I didn't try any moving subjects with the 85 Sonnar, (other than the small girl with the soccer ball, but that was far away) so it's quite possible it could be very difficult to focus as well. I think part of the appeal of the Sonnar is that if it really is being made again by Zeiss, and if the German store advertising this is correct with their pricing, it will cost around $3000 USD, which is slightly less than what I remember was the price when it was still available, and $1k less than the 90AA... Still, I want to try the 90AA to see for myself...

Wow, thanks Hilmar! To answer your questions:

It's available light with the 21 Lux wide open, so it vignettes a fair amount, which might give the look of some flash because the edges are already quite dark. Not too much editing on all of these, just some curves adjustments to tweak the contrast a bit and white balance. The kid on the right is the reason I took this photo. She was in her own world playing with the stick, while the other kids were watching me and their parents. I didn't put them on the bench, the coach did to get ready for the game... And I find the goalie's face is quite funny... he looks kind of like a tough kid, big and brutish compared to the others. He's the same kid in the 7th photo, surrounded by the other boys with hotdogs.

No. 2) Beautiful composition. Like that the kids are in the lower part and that there is a lot of the environment visible.

Thanks, that's what I like too, and how intensely they're watching the end of another game on the ice. In higher rez, there's a really nice feel of separation of the two boys from the background.

No. 3) A perfect photo. Like the way the guy is holding the winner's cup.

Thanks, that's also what drew me to this scene. He was holding it for his wife, who won it as volunteer of the year...

No. 4) Looks like staged (just one kid looking into the camera). Excellent.

I didn't tell him to look. Like most kids, when they see someone with a camera, they're curious and watch. If it was just the backs of the kids then the image would be lacking a clear focal point.

This brings up an interesting observation: parents train their kids to stop and look at the camera. I can't count how many times that day parents would tell their kids to stop what they're doing and look at me so I can get a photo. Of course, this is exactly the opposite of what I want, which is to ignore me. I can say with some confidence that I've trained my friends' kids to not stop and pose.

No. 5) Excellent composition and so smooth.

No. 6) Feel as if I were part of the action.

No. 7) Hockey is very rewarding. Seems as if they burned many calories. ;-))

No. 8) Action shot. You must have been quick with focusing. Stunning shot.

I got lucky here. Zone focused around f/2.8 and panned it correctly as he moved with the trophy.

No. 9) Like the composition again. Great, great work.

This one didn't work out as well as I had hoped... first of all the one parent went behind the trophies but I was hoping at least a couple more kids would come at the same time, but instead one of the coaches took most of the trophies back.

Thanks Gary, Charles, Joe, Ron

Nate - love the boat shot on the prior page. VERY nice! Also, the shot of the monk on this page is great composition. Great colors

Charles - Love your shots on the prior page. Portrait #2 of the woman in purple is excellent. I can't complain about the model set on the prior page, either . The shot of the 3 girls above is great composition in getting them all relatively close to the focal plane at such a narrow DOF. Did you have to crop much of that one?

Ron - what a great set! Looks like a ton of fun. You really made the 21 Lux shine. #1 is my favorite. Some look serious, some lost, some just clowning around . The shot looking down at the 3 helmets with the 28 is also one of my favorites

Joe - shooting during the meeting . The light shining above definitely gives an otherwise average surrounding a neat look.

I took out the 24 Elmar for a spin the other day.....this lens is truly unreal in sharpness. I have never had a lens that was so razor sharp in every part of the image. The ZM 25 was sharp...the 24 Elmar seems like it takes it to another level. Not to mention, the rendering is gorgeous

brick wall test....

the last shot was pretty much pitch black in the shadows before adjustments in LR4. What a difference in LR3 and LR4 in being able to pull out the shadows. The M9 files respond very well to LR4
