Great work everyone. Always fun to drop in on this thread!
A couple of shots with my new daily lens, 35 Cron ASPH, on a recent trip back home to Ipoh, Malaysia and a short day-trip to Penang.
Thanks for your comments everyone . Hope to visit this thread and contribute more often.
Zhangyue, congrats on the Lux, i think you'll enjoy it. We should plan on meeting sometime. Mt. View is not that far off from SJC
Charles, lovely beach shot. You've come a long ways in your PP skills. I love what you do with the color and how well you preserve the rendition character of a lens.
Ryan, nice cemetery shots. #1 and #2 are especially nice.
Ron, ^ +1. #1 and #3 shows the mood very well.
KL, tell me about the tropical heat!
Joe, interesting shot that #2.
Ocean, the first one works for me.
Ron, Michael, Joakim, Joe and Ajay, thank you for your comments
Ron, really like #2!
Michael, love the dramatic composition of #1 and the rendering of the ZM 50/1.5 Sonnar
Joe, very nice set. Love the style of #1
Ocean, the first shot is very nice
KL, excellent series! Particularly #3, 4 and 1
Some more assorted shots with the 24 lux (#1,2) and 50 lux (#3,4). Sorry for a similar 24 lux (#2) shot as above, I just can't believe how different and good this lens is at close-to-mid distances.
Charles - great beach shot! Although we live on the east coast here, what they call beaches is just downright pathetic. Wish we had something decent.
Ron - great cemetery set . Out of your shots that are the same (28 Cron and 50 Lux) I like the Cron shot better.
Michael - congrats on the 50 Lux! Its contagious, huh? I am really drawn to your 50 Sonnar shot. All of them that you have posted of the kids so far is excellent. Nice and sharp dead center and lovely bokeh
Joe - Great composition in the first shot from Kuala Lumpur! I really like how you incorporated the shadows in your 'ghost' shot. Very nice
Ocean - Nice shots with the CV 90, the placement of the zoo on the water there is neat
KL - As always, great work on the streets of Malaysia. I agree, the 35 Cron ASPH was the first lens that got me hooked to Leica. I like your 'pretty hot day' shot....but if its hot...why is everyone in long sleeves?
Ajay - another nice set with the 24 Lux! Don't know which I like more, the streets in #1 or the car in #4 . I agree, the rendering of that lens is beautiful
Nate - very nice shot in Myanmar! Great composition on that one
Ocean2059, nice Sydney scenes
KL. super street set as always! Excellent work with the 35Cron ASPH.
Kelly, nice sunset scene from FL!
Ajay, another very nice set with the 24Lux.
Nate, love that shot! Very strong composition.
Ryan, the 3rd shot is my favorite from your last set. I like the feeling of depth on that shot.
Charles, the pp looks good.
Joe, The 2nd one has very interesting shadow; itself will be an excellent picture. I see you got a new toy. Do you like it?
Ocean, Beautiful picture. I wish you could sharp them a little more or adding more clarity with them. It could be just me
KI, Nice set of street shot. Especially like the one with your Dad, I wish I can have a picture walk with my father like you did. Maybe instead of sell my NEX, I should give it to him.
KKCSM, the image has very nice clarity.
Ajay, yes, sometime a photo walk with Leica/Zeiss talk would be nice. Curious, do you still have DSLR setup? Another wonderful set. The first one has really good color and tone with a sense of depth into the picture. Again, I like the portrait. The first car picture also shows nice rendering of 50lux.
Nate, Very interesting perspective, which lens you use. You were really close to first person.
Ryan, 1st and 2nd have beautiful color and rendering. I enjoy those green and lighting.
Charles, This is first time I see the picture. Wonderful portrait. Ajay and your 24lux shots are killing me, I wish Zeiss could come up something fast wider than 35, It will sell just as good for the 15mm I think based on user feedback in this forum. Leica’s price are crazy. Maybe a Nikon 24G is a pain relieve temporally
Michael, very nice with the Sonnar on the previous page. You really seem to get great results with it... maybe you don't need that 50 Lux aftera all? Will be interesting to hear your thoughts on the difference between the two.
Speaking of Sonnar... I met up with a fellow FMer yesterday for an informal gear shootout and photowalk. I'll let him ID himself later when he has a chance to post. He has the 85 Sonnar, a lens I've been wanting to try for a while...
As I mentioned there, it would be fun to compare against the 90 Cron AA, which I see you have in your possession now Joe? BTW, love the ghost image.
KL, great to see you here again, love #1 & 3!
Ajay, the 24 and 50 Luxes make a great combo.
Kelly, thanks for the clarification - not a Harry Potter follower, so I didn't clue in. Nice sunset too.. hope you had a great vacation.
Ocean, nice colours from the zoo!
Nice one Nate - I enjoy following your updates on Flickr and your interesting adventures as described on your blog.
Good set Ryan - some trees are starting to bud up here already, though we could still get hit with bad weather in the coming weeks.
Charles - pp looks very good!
Michael, great feel to the set and I very much like the first one here.
Thx for the welcome back Ron!
I had the good fortune of attending Alex and Rebecca Webb's workshop recently when they were here in Singapore. Marvellous learning experience and we did not talk at all about gear (though I desperately wanted to ask some gear-related questions). Here's a pic of the dynamic duo with their award-winning book designer, David Chickey -
I'll try to find some time to put together some thoughts on the workshop. So much information, only the same brain capacity = overloaded photographic brain
Joe - I'm curious to hear your thoughts on the 90 AA. I bet that is an interesting lens on the NEX-7 as well
Michael - Which CV 35 do you have, VI or VII? I really like your 3rd shot with the silhouette
Ron - lovely rendering with the 85 Sonnar. Really like the comp on #3, very sharp and creamy at the same time. What are your initial thoughts?
KL - looking forward to hearing more on your workshop. I to this date have never taken part in one....really want to. Problem is finding one here in Savannah, GA
Thanks Zhangyue, which new toy did you refer to? the 90 AA or NEX7? I like your 3rd shot with the silhouette, very nice.
Ron, another excellent set on your walk, the 3rd shot is my favorite. I think for the kind of shots you take, the 90Cron AA begs to be in your hand After my 28Cron, this lens wows me the most, even more than the 35 or 50Lux ASPH. Unbelievable sharpness and detail even wide open, but only if you can nail focus ... I find it hard to focus wide open and need to shoot at least 2-3 shots to get one sharp enough. The pic I posted above require 3 shots to get one with acceptable focus. I tried taking a bunch of shots wide open with my son walking or playing around and I had zero keepers I also tried it on the NEX7 and its marginally easier to focus if the subject is still. With a moving subject, even with focus peaking, it was hard to nail focus. But when its in focus, its really unbelievable.. I don't know what kind of magic dust it has. but it works! BTW, the 90Cron AA is not mine, testing it out for a friend who wants to sell his copy
KL, am kind of envious that you attended the workshop. Alex Webb is one of my favorite photographers.
Ryan, really nice set with the CV 35 1.2. Love that 3rd shot!
Nate, another beautiful composition!
Charles, nice shots from Bangkok. Can't wait to see more!
Ryan, love the last two - such color!
Nate - very serene!
Charles, great portraits of street life!
Joe, that's very interesting. I was going to ask you for a mini-review - thanks for posting one. I think I'd need to do a side by side comparison of the two. My feeling, not having used the 90AA, is that it could be a more all-round lens, especially for technical photography, based on what Luka produced with it during his USA trip. However, I didn't try the ZM85 stopped down past f/2.8. At that point it is *extremely* sharp at least in the middle on a 3D subject. At f/2 one can see it is just a touch off, but still excellent. The focus issue you're having though is a huge concern. I touched on this and other points in the linked 85 Sonnar thread in my post above. What surprised me perhaps the most about it was how extremely easy it was to focus compared to the 90 Summarit. Yeah, it's a fat lens, but that fat focusing ring provides a very large circumference, and Zeiss designed it with "an extremely precise, non-linear rangefinder coupling," according to its spec sheet. But I have to admit, I really like the size of the Summarit, and generally have no focusing issues stopped down a bit. I guess one can't have it both ways.
Ryan, what struck me with #3 above was how the bark of the tree was rendered and while the background is well out of focus, you can still make out the name on the gravestone. It's like the lens has shallow depth of field and doesn't, at the same time.
Charles, I think it's somewhere between the 75 Lux and 90AA. It's already quite sharp at f/2.
Unfortunately I only shot one somewhat similar scene each with the Sonnar and Summarit, both at f/2.8:
Nate: Your last two pictures from Burma you posted here are truly outstanding regarding composition, content and apt/cautious PP. (Insert a big thumbs up here!!)
(IMHO you might tilt the last one a bit to the left in order to straighten the horizon.)
