Sorry if this is a stupid question but one of the things that has kept me away from RF's is that I love close focus detail shots. Is this a tight crop or can RF's focus closer than I think they can?
RF can focus as close as 700mm (70cm, 0.70m, 27.56")... some RF lenses can focus as close as 500mm but are not rangefinder coupled, so you have to estimate the distance from your film/sensor plane to your subject

My 21/3.4 ASPH should arrive next week. I will try and go nuts taking some shots with it. All I have to compare it with currently is the 18/4 Distagon.
That should make for an interesting comparison, especially size/handling...

The older 35/2 Summicrons are said to be very similar to the 40/2 Summicron-C, and it has issues on the M8. While perfectly sharp from corner to corner at close distance and f/2.8, it gives really smeared and ugly corners and borders at ~5 meters and beyond, even stopped down to f/11. I think this has something with the offset microlenses to do, since it also happened with my old M8. The Voigltänder 35/1.4 behaves the same and they both have the exit pupil quite far away from the sensor, which might explain it, because they're (at least the C) very sharp on film at all distances....Show more →
Tack Martin! I've also found a M8 + Ultron 28/2.0 combo but I've read about massive problems with focus shift. I think it would be wisest to buy the house first and then buy the lens I want separately. Which lens in the 28-40-ish range would you recommended if my budget is about 8 000 SEK / ~$1000 USD?
kim, great images. The 24 3.8 shines. Lloyd's site said it did, and in fact, is better than the 24 lux in ways, well, ok, I didn't say I agreed completely with him...

Does anyone use B+W XS-pro filters with the new Leica lenses that have screw on hoods? I'm worried that the larger diameter of the filter will be a problem.
Haven't posted much lately, but here are a few tidbits. Nothing really creative, but I was at the Leica Store in Munich today and had a chance to play with some of their used lenses. I tried a bunch, but posted below are images from a 50 Lux version I (2,800 Euros!!), 50mm f/1.5 Summarit (700 Euros) and the 50 Lux ASPH. These are SOOC and exposure is not identical, nor is framing, since I wasn't intending for this to be a formal comparison I'd show anywhere...
50 Lux v.I:
50 f/1.5 Summarit:
50 Lux ASPH (cropped a bit for framing consistency):
Bonus 50 f/1.5 Summarit:
If I had to add a caption to the last image... "Sales staff is amazed anyone wants to buy a Leica re-badged Panasonic compact camera at Leica prices." (Though the Panasonic cameras are decent)
Needless to say, the 50 Lux ASPH is pretty impressive and it's interesting to see the much different background blur character compared to the older lenses. But I like the focus throw of the old Lux better. The focus isn't as fast and it's a bit easier to fine tune. I'm kind of digging the Summarit's background blur character (I guess 'bokeh'). I've read quite a few tough evaluations of this lens, but the softness and bleed around high contrast areas actually kind of appeals to me. Just not sure it's worth spending 700 Euro. Didn't see any listed on KEH so not sure what the going rate is for one. This one had a touch of haze inside and I could see some separation happening between a couple elements, but it wasn't visible looking directly through the lens... Any thoughts?
BTW, the staff were very friendly and let me try whatever I wanted. Absolutely no pressure to buy anything.

Dan, I'm pretty sure, that this will not work. The clearance between the standard F-PRO filters and the new lens hoods is very very small and the XS-pro have a significantly larger diameter.
I've not tried tried them on my Leica lenses but on some of my Zeiss lenses. For example you can't use XS-Pro filters with lens hoods on the Zeiss lenses 2/35 ZE and 18ZM.
