Thanks Carsten, Charles and Joe.

Carsten, compared to the M8 the M9 has in my opinion only these advantages:
- FF
- more MP
- less shutter-noise
- no need for IR-filter
- better interface/menu

The rendering, IQ and feeling is in my opinion pretty similar.

If you don't need the wide angle choices of a FF camera or just use this camera in addition to a DSLR system a 1500€ M8 is in my opinion clearly the better choice compared to the 6000€ M9 (especially with regard to price).

But my plan is to change completely to the M-system and sell my DSLR stuff sooner or later. And I also love wide angle lenses. Therefore I wanted to get a FF M. I will make this change when every lens/camera combination is properly calibrated and thoroughly tested.

By the way I've already sold my M8, Nex5, both Zeiss ZM lenses and the 17 TSE lens last week.

Today I did some tests regarding the RF focus of my M9-P with the Summilux 50 Asph with the following result:
At MFD the focus is just perfect (at f/1.4). At 1.5 m distance I get a constant front-focus of ca. 2 cm (again at f/1.4). I repeated the test five times and always got the same result. At longer distances (10-20m) I get even more front-focus.

I need some advice from the Leica experts here.

What does this mean? Is this just a RF/camera problem or does the lens also need some adjustment? Should I just send the camera to Solms or the camera together with the lens (that would be the second visit of this lens in Solms)?

Boris

No expert advice from me, Boris, but remembering Charles' and Luka's stories why not send the whole lot of gear since you do not have any other camera (afaik) for your M lenses anyhow just to be sure... ?

Boris, sounds like a similar problem to mine with the 50 Planar. Do you get sharp infinity focus when the lens is set to the infinity hard stop? Does the rangefinder show correct focus at infinity?

I think Charles has had a lot more experience in this area and am also interested in hearing suggestions. My initial guess would be to send both in just to be sure, but means being without both for a while. Did you notice a similar problem with the M8? If not, my guess would be more the camera than the lens.

Very nice selection from the Bügerfest. Did you have much trouble focusing the Lux in light of the problems you described?

Kyle - that's an excellent set!!
Gregory - what, no photos of Will & Kate All kidding aside, very well done. I love activity around events.. getting ready, etc. and you've done a great job capturing that.
Joe - excellent composition! Also not sure what root 4 is... must be an engineer thing
Charles, very nice. I especially like the beach scenes.

A few from a park nearby, and peeking into a couple backyards from the trail.

Boris, there are three adjustments on the camera, and the shape of the cam on the lens.

The adjustment behind the red dot (or screw in the case of the M9-P) is only for the vertical alignment, and the eccentric wheel (the one that sticks out of the camera when there is no lens on) is for the close-near adjustment for the whole range, not just part of the range.

This leaves the eccentric elbow on the rangefinder wheel arm and the cam on the lens. To decide which is at fault, you should carefully test each of your lenses. If only the 50 Lux ASPH is out, then the cam needs adjustment. If all lenses are out, the elbow needs adjustment. Keep in mind that with f/1.4, the Lux ASPH is much more sensitive to small errors in adjustment than most other lenses, apart from the 75 Cron, 75 Lux and 90 Cron variants, so if you only have slower lenses, their additional depth of field could hide an error.

Heinz is right though. Once you decide on your kit, send it all in together. Only this way can you be relatively sure to get everything right in the end. If you take it to your dealer and demonstrate the problem, there is also the chance that they will ship it for you. My dealer always did that when I had a problem (Meister Camera Berlin).

Anyone know when Luka is going to be back from his tour of North America ? Certainly looking forward to seeing some familiar sights through his unique photographic style.

As an aside, I was going back over a bit of this thread from the early days and its rather funny to come across post from him talking about how he'd never buy a M9 and how a RF doesn't work for landscape style shooting. Certainly seems to have proven himself wrong in that regard!

Thanks Charles for the explanation. I think for it to work one must have it subconsciously hardwired and operate on instinct.

I have attached two of HCB's work with the lower R4R overlay to better visualize.

Nice pics everyone! Gregory - you are making me really miss the Stampede this year. Did you know the there is an extremely high birth rate spike approximately nine months after the Stampede? True.

Thanks all!

Kyle - what a great set! Sure looks like you had a great time. My favorite is 'Up and Away'

Ron - great shots. The colors look so good...looks like you are having a nice summer. We have nothing but smoke around from fires. #2 and #3 from the first set are excellent

Charles - You always hear how 'bad' the M9 is at high ISO's and while that is not D700/5DMII quality it is still very good.

Gary - Did you get an M8? If so, have any lenses yet?

Here are some more shots from the other night

28 Cron

35 Lux (I need a Nocti )

Thanks Charles, KL! KL - don't you have a film M? Gives you some time to bond

Here are my first 90 Macro shots. So far.....seems like it will be a very fun lens to use. Focuses relatively close (.7m without the goggles) and the bokeh is superb. Sharpness wide open at MFD is also excellent.

Thanks Heinz, Carsten and Charles for your advice. I did sent the M9-P together with the 21SE and the Lux 50 to Leica.

Ron, I did not test the camera/lens at infinity yet. I had only some minor problems focusing the Summilux at the Bürgerfest. On most of the images the main subject was still in focus but on the edge of getting unsharp.
