Thanks Joakim, Luka

Armanius, nice portraits and shots posted past week with the CV lenses. Welcome to the thread
Joakim, nice "doors" series with the 50Lux. The 1st one is my favorite although the 3rd one screams 50Lux ASPH
Luka, I like the yellow, red, black pic of your construction set a few pages back. A new German flag perhaps?
Nate, nice set from NYC, like the #1 & 3rd shot best! How do you like the M9 so far?
Charles, nice continuation of your Bangkok series with the 50Lux, 35LuxII and 28Cron! Love the colors and pp. The portraits are always wonderful to look at.
Heinz, nice reflection set. My favorite is the picture with the red chairs, really nice reflections, colors and shadows.
Ryan, nice set with the 50 Planar. Has the Zeiss "pop", especially on the bench shot
Gregory, nice "varied" set as always. Love this last set with the varied expressions on the faces (and finger), very nice!! I think if you stay on this thread long enough, we can probably tell each others' personalities by the shots we take. No escaping!
Shaun, nice shot with the ZM21. Did you add this lens to your kit recently?
Paul, nice set with the CV15.
Ron, love the colors with that bomber shot! The angle gives me an impression that you were actually strapped to the wings taking that shot .

You have to differentiate between quality and quality. Leica lenses and cameras are built like tanks.. tanks that have been assembled by moderately talented monkeys. The optical design and the materials used are all first rate but the assembly is definitely not.

This is not unique to Leica. Anything that's handmade with such precision comes at a cost. If we want a Leica M system with less "problems", Leica would have to invest in new machinery and add more man hours to produce the products, but would we pay $25,000 for a M9 or $35,000 for a 50Lux ASPH so that Leica can invest in better QC or equipment? Compare a basic Patek Phillipe watch with their simplest movement, you still have to wind it everyday and its not as accurate as a quartz Seiko, but it still cost more than a Leica M9 plus a few lenses. I personally have a "famous" Swiss watch which has its winding mechanism fail after less than 10 years....

......A minute ago I was very tempted to just throw out the 5DII and lenses and just go with the M9 & M6.. but then I remembered that I can't go without a backup camera... I mean what if I bump it into something and knock the rangefinder out of alignment. That would be a disaster. So I have to have backup. And thus backup lenses - the three heavy Zeiss ZE primes. And then adding a 70-200, although big and heavy, doesn't change things much..

I think Charles perhaps got the right idea to have a second M9 for backup...

+1 on a backup M9.. and don't worry, there are many M9s in stock in the USA right now if you decide to leave the 5D kit in the truck Have a safe trip!

As always, great pics all!
Have a great trip Luka! Can't wait to see the pics - what a gear list! A second M9 is a great idea - charles is really ahead of the curve in that department!

Some shots from the last trip, having some post-trip blues and planning a next trip (haha):

Any M9 owners going for the upgrade to M9-P? "Leica M9 upgrade to Leica M9-P silver or black

An upgrade for Leica M9 owners is available from October 2011, making the Leica M9 into a Leica M9-P by replacing the top plate with the engraved Leica M9-P in desired color (Silver or Black), an accompanying bottom plate, and sapphire glass on the screen. The black M9-P also has black flash shoe. One must presume that the leather on Leica M9 grey will be changed as well. Prices should be around 1,050 € and includes an extended warranty of one year on the camera."

Cheers,
kl

Nice images Gregory and Joe! Thanks Joe, that was kind of the idea... I did a lot of photos with people milling around, which are interesting in their own right, but also wanted a few of the plane without all the clutter.
KL, very strategic positioning of the one jet of water at the fountain! All very nice images!

KL: no plan for me to upgrade. It's cosmetic only, and I have no issues with the appearance of the M9 as it is now. If it was a performance upgrade, such as deeper, faster buffer, quieter shutter, etc., I would do it for that price. The upgrade price would put me halfway to the SEM. If I sell my ZM21, I'd be most of the way there...

Thanks Ron

KL, excellent set! You love taking pics from buses and trains huh? 2nd & 4th are my favorites. #4 is really nice!

The upgrade from M9 to M9-P could be interesting because you could theoretically re-coup some of the $$ when you sell it later for a M10.

Hi Joe, Tx - taking from bus & train & cab = no choice - haha, travelling with the family (one member of which is a difficult little 4 year old girl).

Pretty keen on the upgrade - just because i am crazy about chrome. I would love to have a 2nd one in black as it really is much more discrete in black.
Very nice pics of your son with the Summarit a few pages back. Are you keeping the 90 summarit?
For me, the new 21 looks like a must have for travels. I'll be selling my 28 Elmarit real soon!

Cheers

Where is the information on the M9 to M9-P upgrade? I didn't know Leica was offering that.

Joe, thank you
Gregory, nice set of varied shots! Never know what to expect
Joe, very nice colour shots! I really like the 90 Summarit
KL, some very nice shots! #1, 2 and 5 are excellent, in particular #5. Really nice PP and conversion
Having been fortunate to have a second M9 as a backup, I can really vouch ithat having both silver and black bodies is almost a must. I did pick up both M9's second hand, but I was fortunate having both colours came as is. Easy to pick, as to which LCC correction to use, and both are slightly different too.

Nate, I got word of it from Jaapv on LCF, maybe shoot an e-mail to cs at leica-camera dot com for full details. Jaap said it was 1050 Euro for the full upgrade/CLA/warranty.

Thanks KL & Charles Yes, I'm keeping the 90 Summarit for now. The main reason I prefer this over my trusty 90 Tele-E is the much better flare control and better IQ wide open.

KL, I understand your situation with taking pics and traveling with children

A few more from my viist to DC Newseum this week. First two pics taken at the Pulitzer Prize photo exhibit. 1, 2 & 4 35Lux ASPH, #3 28Cron

BTW, especially for Heinz and film shooters, this M2 and 35Cron was used to take this picture.

Thank you Joe! Off course I have seen this Vietnam picture before, it was going through the press all over the world and I am old enough to have seen it . But I did not know that it was taken with a M2. BTW, where is this M2 displayed?

I just love the colors in your first set, they are quite different from most M9 images here. They are almost like shot on film, but with the incredible IQ of the M9.

Although I am not too much into black and white, your second series is stunning, especially the shot with the piano. That's epic.

Heinz

Running out of images, the weather is really not nice since more than a week.

Those are from March, I just got the camera a day before and took it out first time. Obviously the focus is not where I wanted it, but I still like them.

Charles - I never would have thought the M9 could ever be used like a "P&S" - but the self-portrait proves otherwise. Maybe Leica should hire you to write the P&S chapter in their new manual - they could sell many more copies!

Charles, thank you. Nice set of casual shots. It is particularly nice to see some faces behind those names here from time to time.

Corposant: spectacular colors from Ektar. I would had thought of E100VS in that case, I've never seen such warm tones from Ektar.

Corposant, very nice warm tones with the Ektar. My favourite lighting, very late afternoon

This was the scene that produced the colors - I don't think it would have mattered what film was used (even chrome):
