I would consider that to be a good deal. Don't know if it's a scam or not though.

Ryan, #3 is really great.

Luka, I like your canon shot. But I think at the moment I prefer your images shot with the 25 ZM and the 35 Lux. The rendering of the Cron looks nice, but there is something missing compared to the other two lenses. Therefore I'm very interested in a direct comparison between these 3 lenses. Maybe it's just me.

Has anybody tried the 24 Elmar? The MTF looks great, even compare with the 28 Cron. But the shoots I've seen so far are rather underwhelming. I'm just not sure whether the reason is the lens itself or that the more talented photographers are just buying the more expensive lenses like the 28 Cron.

I briefly tried the 24 Elmarit on my NEX, and found it superb! Better than ZM 25 for colours and contrast, but not quite as "3D". And, of course, not as fast. Good to see you active, Boris!

There's something about the the way the 28 Summicron renders that I find extremely pleasing. And I'm getting a good amount of 3D from to boot. I think thats it. Has those pleasing Leica colors too.

Gregory, really nice set of shots! I love the angle and perspective
Phil, nice shot with the Nocti!
Boris, no experience with the 24 Elmar, but like with all the lenses, having unique signatures, if you have the opportunity, try it and see if you like the way it paints. I would not just go by the MTF charts .

Philippe, great to see you here The 24 Elmarit is an another great lens!

Excellent work everyone.

Most of the images posted in this thread are elegantly simple. I am starting to wonder if the M cameras just get out of the way and it is really up to the photographer to 'make' something. It is not that one can't use other cameras to make images like in this thread, but there is something I just can't put my finger on.

Anyways, Phil and Luka thanks for your comments on the X1 and X100.. I need to think some more about them. So far, what I've seen from X100 - images are a little underwhelming, except for the color.

Thanks Phil, Charles, Gregory, Boris and Malkovic!

Charles - lovely colors you get. My favorite is #2. I like the last one with them checking out their shot

Gregory. nice series. You definitely get diifferent angles that I wouldn't think of....and they're great. #3 almost looks like a tilt/shift with the narrow DOF. I also like the vette shot a lot

Phil - nice to see several shots over the last few days. I can always use Noct shot . Very unique rendering. I really like that last shot....an ND filter is probably an absolute must when shooting on the wider end in the Cali sun. Have you found that .9 is enough for f/1?

Philippe/Boris I would love to see some 24 Elmarit shots. That is supposed to be an excellent lens but I'm not sure how it compares to the ZM 25 and if it merits the difference in price. Probably not . I would like to see a comparison with the 28 Cron too but I think a big difference will be not in the technical points (such as sharpness) but more so in rendering. I love the 28 Cron rendering and from what I remember theZM 25 was a far more clinical lens. It is almost perfect technically in every way, but the magic that the 28 Cron has isn't there. To my eyes anyways.

Also Boris, I Have seen images posted to several different boards such as RFF, GetDPI, flickr, etc and by FAR what I see here onFM is the best overall. I feel that most of the other places there are a couple great photographers posting images in a large pool of mostly underwhelming images. You can look at almost every image thread in the Alt Lens section of FM and find a good post anytime. Long story short, you have to try it yourself....or let Luka be the guinea pig

Thanks Ryan, Carsten, Phil, Charles, Boris, Malkovic

Ryan, very nice set overall, but #3 (red paper bag) is just jawdropping. Fantastic colors and great composition with the recurring rectangular shapes.

rsolti13 wrote:
I feel that so far what I have used this lens comes closest to Zeiss ZE/ZF line in terms of microcontrast/3D effect. What is your feeling on that?

I think what it has in common with some Zeiss lenses is the high contrast of fine detail. It's one thing I missed with the 35 Lux ASPH, at least for landscapes.

Charles, excellent series. #2 has really great colors, but my favorite is #1. Excellent contrast, tonality and composition

Bobu wrote:

The 28 Cron colors are the best I've seen out of any lens. The 35 Lux has a less detailed, more moody and intimate drawing style. The 25 ZM is a really good lens, perhaps the closest one you are familiar with is the 35 ZE, although it has higher contrast in the fine detail and less contrast in the course detail. So it's somewhere between the 21 Distagon and 35 ZE.

I have a bunch of shots to post, but I'll do it tomorrow as I'm completely exhausted after a long combat operation against an IKEA case. I finally solved my camera/lenses storage problem. I've been storing my cameras and lenses all over the place - in camera bags, in a closet, on bokshelves etc.. this is what I came up as a more permanent solution:

Sorry for the crappy shot, but I didn't have the energy to make a better one. Shot with the X1 with a Canon 430EX flash mounted on it (looks absolutely ridiculous as the flash is much larger than the X1)..

Been keeping my nose to the grindstone trying to push through a backlog of recent work. Here's a favourite from Lake Geneva - Chateau Chillon at sunset. Arrived too late to go in, oh well, it was interesting enough around the outside.

M9 & ZM21

Greg - nice selection as usual. I'm curious about the CV12 - have you coded it (it seems you probably have) and which did you find to work the best? It seems to work better on the M9 than the CV15, so now, even though I'm not sure how much I would use the 12, am thinking of getting one...

Ryan, excellent last set. The first image has a nice feel IMO and love the wall in the fourth. Have you been doing anything differently with your PP lately?

Charles, love the sunset photos!

Phil, those cars are awesome and the photos really make them gleam. Curious about your statement about not liking to go stronger than ND.9. Are there problems with color shifts, or other image degradation? It would seem to me that a .6 on an f/1.4 lens might not be quite enough in full on bright sun with white subject matter... (assuming ISO 160 rather than pull ISO 80). I realize you're at f/1 on the Nocti...

Luka, nice solution. Reminds me of when I used to work in a camera store

Interestingly, a similar type of project has kept me on observer status here. For the past week, during a lull between work, I decided to tackle what seems to be becoming a once-per-decade spring cleaning (yeah, I hate throwing away anything I *think* I might need down the road). I managed to get rid of a lot of junk, like dead and obsolete electronics, old boxes for stuff no longer in my possession, etc... But perhaps the most depressing was the reminder that I have literally thousands of rolls of processed film that at some point I want to re-edit and digitize. The problem with that, however, is I feel like I'm barely keeping on top of all the digital work from the past years, let alone the last few months.

As for gear storage, I really like the Pelican 1510 case with dividers and already have a couple for my big lenses and football travel kits. They're an excellent, practical replacement for the big cases the super-tele lenses come in. They're also practical size that doesn't get too heavy when full, so I'm thinking of buying a few more and just keeping all cameras and lenses in those instead of my current storage solutions. I figure I can also pack about 20-24 bare hard drives in one (I have about 30-40 at the moment, including back-ups, etc., though critical files are also 'on the cloud'...). A week ago we had a storm with 100 km/h (60 mph) gusts. Trees were uprooted, etc., but luckily not around the house. It got me thinking if the house ever got nailed by anything that could cause water damage, I'd be in trouble. Also, a couple days ago our 1970s vintage toaster caught on fire (!), so that got me thinking about potential smoke damage... A Pelican won't do much against an actual fire, or probably if the house got hit directly by a tornado, but it would at least provide better protection against some degree of smoke, water and impact...

Oh, and congrats Luka on the 28 Cron. It looks very impressive considering its 'bargain' price compared to the 35 Lux. I noticed what seemed to look like CA in some of the tree photos in your first set. Is it an issue with the lens, or just a fluke with those files? For example: cron28-007.

Nice shot Ron

This morning I discovered a problem with my storage solution - in the morning the case is in direct sunlight. I suppose that's less than ideal, especially for the plastic lenses/cameras. I don't know how good it is for the metal lenses to go through a thermal expansion/contraction every day either... Unfortunately I don't really know where else to put it...

Thanks. Yes, the 28 Cron is somewhat prone to purple fringing in high contrast situations, but no more than most other lenses. Less than the 35 & 50 Lux, I think. As for the price, I paid about 40% more for it than for my 35 Lux ASPH as I bought the latter used for a reasonably good price.

Luka cool case, but why is tha canon stuff at the bottom ? At least you still have your canon equip

Thanks. It's sorted by frequency of use. Leica first, 5DII + Zeiss lenses second, Medium format film & 7D + Canon AF lenses shared third.

Thanks for the comments all!

Charles - I like the beach scene. The 90 Cron APO looks like an excellent lens

Gregory - like the composition on many of those wide angle shots. 12mm is way too wide for me, I wouldn't know what to do with it. You are making good use of it

Phil - Great 50 Noct shots! My favorites are #1, #2 and the B/W one. Looks like you got an excellent copy.

Ron - very nice shot...like the silhouette. I have been adding a little more color and sharpness.....I think my shots were a little on the dull side.

Luka, nice set from Sigtuna, the lighting on the last shot with the 50Lux is beautiful. Which IKEA case is this? I think I want one too..
Ryan, nice set with the 28Cron from the previous and this page. I like the colors and comp on that gift package pic, excellent! The 4th shot with the windows and stairs is also very nice. I see a slightly different color pp in these?
Charles, another wonderful set with the 28Cron from the beach! The 90Cron AA shot is also beautiful! Nice tones.
Phil, very nice B&Ws with the 50/1.0. Beautiful rendering and tones. I think you have a great copy of this lens.
Ron, excellent capture with the ZM21! Perfect timing!

---
My Dell PC needs a new HDD and I'm waiting for them to send it to me and then I have to reinstall LR3 etc. I really don't know which is worse right now, Dell or Windows.

Meanwhile, a fun shot with the M8 CV50/1.5 from the archive

Very nice set Ryan

Thanks Joe. The IKEA case is called "Klingsbo". I'm not crazy about the design of the lower part of it, but I've managed to hide it pretty well. Cool shot by the way!

I a backlog of pictures from the past few days. I'll post some of them later, including the formal 28 Cron duck shots, but instead I'll post some shots from today where the focus is on composition using the 28mm. It's an interesting challange. 28mm is perhaps the most "grown up" focal length I've used. It requires some of the techniques of UWA lenses, but you don't get the dramatic effect that you get with an UWA. So it requires a bit more effort to get something that works in terms of composition.

The first two shots are examples of what I call 'folded perspectives' - i.e when you in the shot include multiple planes that imply perspective in different directions. The effect of this can be simply to imply a 3D space, but one can also use it in a more advanced way by incorporating perspectives that when shown in a 2D image appear contradictory. The third shot is a 2D version of the 'folded perspective'. The wide angle is used to capture a series of diverging lines that one intuitively feels should be parallel, but in the image they are not.
