I completed my Leica APO-Summicron-SL "Trinity" (28mm,50mm,90mm) lens set today. So I went down to the Boardwalk to test Peter Karbe's command to shoot these lenses wide open. Since this is primarily a people lens for me I shot random people street style at f/2.0, shutter speed had to go between 1/5000 sec and 1/6400 sec to manage exposure. The SL3 was up to the task. I would say that the lens performs wonderfully wide open. Focus wise I don't think I missed a shot all day. I think this camera and lens setup will be perfect for the project

Got ahold of a 35 Cron APO.....compared to my 35 Lux FLE. Very interesting. My Lux FLE I want to say is very close to as sharp as the Cron, both wide open. The Cron APO blows the Lux away in out of focus areas....suddenly I don't like the Lux rendering as much lol. I want to say the Cron 35 APO looks more like f/1.4 of the Lux in background blur than the Lux at f/2

I would choose the lux over cron anytime, mild to moderate structured bokeh give the image more "content" to look at. In fact, at normal viewing size, I can't tell much of a difference, if anything, the lux seems to have punchier color (and f1.4 when you needed it!). I rarely pixel peep nowadays so much that sometimes I let through some dust spots cause I can't spot them at normal viewing size lol.

If I may say so without being presumptuous, “nothing special” is unnecessarily modest. I’d also have to say, these lenses wide open are pretty impressive.

How do you find the weight and size of the SL3 + APO lenses? Much as I enjoy using my M cameras, I find myself tempted by either the SL3 or X2D, for a combination of autofocus, IQ and colour reasons (although I really don’t need another camera), but I’d want to satisfy myself that I’d be happy using them for travel and walking 5-10 miles in cities in the summer.

Thanks for the kind words. Always appreciated.

Honestly, for travel and carrying around I favor the M system strongly. Nothing else available provides a similar level of IQ in such a compact form factor. Such a great shooting experience too.

The SL3 and APO lenses are too heavy for me for that use case. But I am 73 years old with some mobility issues. I find all of the full frame autofocus mirrorless systems too big and heavy for that when using their best lenses. I will use it primarily for studio, portraits, cityscape, and landscapes, when there is not a lot of walking. I am guessing I will be on a tripod in many such circumstances. I will say that when coupled with the APO-SUMMICRON-SL primes I don't think any other system delivers the IQ however. The APO primes are bigger than M but still smaller and higher IQ than zoom lenses. Not crazy big. The SL3 also makes a great platform for shooting small M lenses. In some cases even better than an M camera. When used that way the size/weight is very easy to manage.

That’s a really helpful and thoughtful perspective. Thank you for taking the time to reply, very good of you.

I’m interested to hear that you find that the SL3 can sometimes actually be a better platform for M lenses (perhaps IBIS is a factor?). The excellent weather resistance is another factor for me, too.

Thank you.

And yes, I know it needs cleaning (just laziness on my part not to have done it … sorry!). Life would be a lot more straightforward if all I had to contend with was scratched film ….
