Wow! Great shots!

I use LIghtroom 3's noise reduction so not quite sure it's similar to ACR NR. The levers and settings mentioned in the tab appear to be the same for LR 3 too.

I find that Noiseware works better, more controls are given. For example, you can reduce noise only in the shadow areas, somthing LR 3 can't really do. LR 3 has a mask for sharpening but they don't have the converse: ie a mask for noise reduction.

ANyway, herei's a severly underexposed shot at Milan which I tried to salvage in PP by using LR3's built in noise reduction functions. Colour NR - almost fullly to the right and Luminance NR in the middle.

Seeing that "my technique" ( not really, it is based on forum posts by Chris Tribble and the reading of Fraser and Schewe and Martin Evening) is discussed here, I will quote it for convenience:

There is a vital difference between the M9 and all other high-end digital cameras. The M9 has virtually no in-camera noise reduction at high ISO, resulting in more detail, but also more visible noise. To avoid this noise, there are two steps to be taken, but first consider the type of photograph:low contrast with diffuse light vs.high contrast with specular highlights. This will make a big difference to the approach you need to take in capture and post-processing.

SHOOTING:

The first trick is to gather as many photons on the sensor as possible to improve Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) without overexposing. That

Thank you KL Love the shot! It is amazing what you can retrieve from under exposed shots with the M9.

Jaap, thank you for the complete post The more I test and try, the more I am impressed with the method. Again thanks for putting the method together and sharing

Interesting discussion about NR options in ACR/LR. I gave it a shot and found that it didn't make a huge impact on my images primarily because I'm quite averse to luminance NR due to the loss of the impression of fine detail. I realize this is all very subjective and therefore my take on NR is I'm wiling to live with the grain. At least now I know what the mask and detail sliders do and how to observe their effect using the alt/option key.

Charles, your first crop is a perfect example of where this technique is ideal. The subject is normally without intricate fine detail and the luminance NR restores what our minds know should be smooth. I tried the technique on images with lots of stone and brickwork, trees, grass, etc. and found that it was too easy to quickly create what for me was a 'digital' look.

My issue with the M9 at ISO 2500 isn't so much the luminance noise as it is the colour response and the inherent issues that arise when making huge WB shifts to RAW files, because inevitably most of these images are made under low level artificial lights. These lights have low degree K values (reddish) and as a result the blue channel receives significantly less exposure than the other channels. Even though it's RAW with all that theoretical leeway, shifting the WB to compensate for this stretches the already underexposed blue channel well past its limit and the result is colour blotchiness that the chroma NR slider never really cures. Of course this is also a problem with other digital cameras, not just the M9, but my feeling is I can get away with it more with a camera like the 1D Mark IV at ISO 3200 or 6400. The solution would be to shoot with an 80A/B/C filter, but at a cost of two stops for the A, though the C might be a better compromise at one stop. But I'm not sure I want to get back to using filters...

KL: looks pretty good for what you had to do to it... just wondering how 'bad' the colour version looks?

Here's a series of images from my train trip to Leica in Allendale NJ a couple weeks ago (apologies in advance if it's a lot of images):

Leaving the Meadowlands area the train travels through a mix of suburbia and light industry...

Excellent series of shots Ron! I alway like the PP to your shots

I agree, there are limitations for the NR technique, and as you have suggested, with the blue channel being pushed at night or with artificial lights. It is an interesting technique though. Still learning more about it

Nice guys...

I am still trying to learn this M8.2 or rather tame it some. I think my biggest gripe with it is really the crop. My 35 Cron asph is just not what it is on my M6...Sigh. If the finder was the same as the M6 but the results came out "cropped", almost tricking me in a sense, I think I may be better off.

I think I am going to give it another week or so and then I may just focus on film.

As far as the noise goes, I have tried or struggled really trying to adapt to C1 Pro 6. I get so far and then I don't feel productive and it doesn't feel fluid like ACR/Lr/Photoshop. Oh well, I gave it a shot.

Here is one of my latest....

This M8.2 sure does produce some clean files. Sometimes I just stare.

Shaun, cool shot! Like the PP on the shot. The noise reduction is better with ACR in LR3/CS5 compared with C1 Pro 6.01 for now at least with the M9, so this would work well with your workflow

So far, I have found that with C1 Pro, the initial noise reduction can be performed on the raw DNG files, then the final via CS5 with Noiseware Pro almost gives a better result. I think this depends very much on the type of noise, low or high frequency noise. Personally a lot of my low light shots are in the streets, or at functions, so there is a tendency for low frequency noise at high iso's. For landscapes/seascapes I would use a light tripod, and be using low iso's, so high frequency noise would not be so much of an issue.

Time for a 28Cron

I have 30 rolls of Arista Premium and Legacy Pro from Freestyle and a F100 from another FM'er on the way to my home

Joe, I got some film for Chirstmas!!! 30 rolls, I am a little jealous. Have you ever shot that rollei pan 25 film? I have always wanted to try it out. I have had it in my shopping cart a few times at Freestyle but have never pulled the triger. I now have my B&W chemicals mixed again so I may be good to go.

As far as that 28 Cron goes, I thought about that awhile back but aren't those little guys expensive? That would put me in a nice situation though...35 on the M6 and 28 on the M8.2. Hmm...

Shaun, I've been shooting mostly Delta 400 and HP5 Plus for B&W and Portra NCs for color. I need the speed for street shots so haven't tried the Rollei Pan 25 but might give it a try when we get more sunlight.

I don't have a 28Cron and was at one point thinking of getting one before I sold my M8. You can't go wrong with the 28Cron. I saw a Bargain condition 28Cron at KEH a few months back for less than $2k, so you might get lucky if you are patient. Like you, I shoot both a film M and a crop digital and switching lenses and UV/IR filters were a huge pain. Can't remember how many times I've accidentally shot some film with the UV/IR filters on. If you don't need sharp corners, the 28/1.9 or 28/2 CV Ultrons are pretty good value. Else you can try the 28 Elmarit.

Thanks Charles and Joe.

Joe: I haven't decided yet on a second M9... it's a slower time of year for me and I'm still not exactly sure how I'll integrate it into my paid work. I would like a second one, but at the moment need to look at other upcoming expenses. BTW, heard back from Leica and they're estimating the repair to be completed by January 24, if not somewhat earlier. I also got the estimate from Canon for the cracked sensor cover glass in one of my Mark IIIs and it's about $1500 CAD to replace the entire sensor assembly. I declined it since it's a high mileage camera and could be replaced at an equivalent cost with a more lightly used one... But it puts me down to only two 1D bodies, which funny as it might sound, at times is not enough for sports and event coverage. So the question is can the M fill in as a third? I think it can for events (corporate, social, etc.) but not nearly as well for sports. I could just get a 7D, but that to me feels like a waste of money because I'd hardly use it. My heart says get another digital M, but my brain says not so fast (I had serious second thoughts after pulling the trigger on the M the first time, until I actually started using it)

Some more photos from my visit to Leica. Instead of inundating everyone with so many, I'll keep it to a few at a time. In this set - detail shots of the Allendale train station - a pedestrian underpass that was built in 1939:

Nice shot Ron. 3rd &4th shots are my fav too. Which lens on the 3rd shot?

Good to know that your M9 will be ready later this month. Yes, looks like a tough call between another dSLR or M9 if you shoot a lot of sports. I'll probably go with the body that brights in the dough first. Else have you considered a used M8 as a temporary backup for the M9, the crop factor helps with longer reach. Good luck and keep us updated.

Great shots Charles, KL, Ron & Joakim

I'm back from Egypt. I had a great time - it's a fantastic place. I have just had the time to copy my photos from the external drive. I'll post images in a separate thread later when I have had the time to go through and to process them. I did however more or less randomly select a few shots and process them.

Somewhere over Romania, I think:

Beduin in the Eastern desert:

Tree, eastern desert:

Sunset, eastern desert:

Khafre's pyramid with Khufu's (Cheops) pyramid in the background:

Women, Cairo street:

Mandatory duck shot, detail from Hatchepsut's death temple:

Karnak, Ramses II's part of the temple:

Anyway, once I process the shots, I'll write up a short trip report and an evaluation of how well the M9 performed.
