Do you mean in the plane of focus or out of the plane?

I don't think it's technically 'LoCA' (longitudinal chromatic aberration) when it pops up out of the plane of focus when the plane of focus is properly correction (even though it's related).

I'm not sure what the exact term is, but for example with the Canon 50L and 85L, I see quite strong magenta/green 'fringing' of things outside of the plane of focus. Nearer defocused objects show a magenta fringe and farther objects a green fringe.

Some shots from a portrait shoot at Springbrook rainforest this morning, with the 75 Lux . The PP was done in ACR, and still yet to try C1 Pro.

I really like that waterfall shot. For lack of a better phrase, nice and 'crisp'

Continued great work to everyone.

I continue to be dissatisfied with the rendering of the gear I own. The gear is beyond my skill I'm sure, but the rendering is something I notice, so I'm having a crisis of wallet.

I suppose I will go and buy and m9 and some lenses...it seems inevitable. Even canon L glass seems lacking to me in rendering on whole. Though there seem to be a lens or two that are good.

What strikes me, and Luka you may be able to comment here, is that the shot style from the rf is so different than the dslr arena. I see great shots from the other camp, but those mostly include studio lighting, posed models, very clinical. It's just, different..and I don't prefer it even when I see portraits side by side.

I know I have a lot to learn though.

Canon glass seems flat, even though technically it's good, it lacks personality. That's not a bait statement, it's just my opinion, maybe it's in my head. I dint think so though, after heavy consideration and consulting others. Maybe nikon is better on the dslr front? I have no experience with nikon aside from trying to fix some shots a 'photographer' blew horribly..they were all 2-3 stops overexposed! That was also with a d300s, so not full frame. And the guy behind the camera obviously had no clue. I'd share but I can't due to NDA unfortunately.

In one way it is with lens preference like with music, literature etc - i.e highly individual regardless of anything else. In a way I find it more surprising that one can actually find demographic patterns. We did an informal poll in the Zeiss thread a couple of months ago, and it turned out that 2/3 of the participants were engineers. I found that very interesting. Part of the explanation is of course that the gear is relatively expensive but that doesn't explain it fully.

This reminds me of the 3D thread here on FM. When it started there was a lot of discussion, and at times there was wide general agreement about what factors play into 3D, how to get it, and which lenses produced it the most. But whenever someone posted a photo, opinions were all over on whether it had 3D or not. Photos can really get in the way of photo theory

I'm curious, what do you think about the Noctilux - new and old? I'm really in awe of the 0.95 rendering - I really like it. The old f/1 one, not so much.

The new one is an awesome accomplishment, and I like the rendering very much. In fact, from f/1.4 and down, the rendering is meant to be almost identical to the 50 Lux ASPH, even down to the MTFs. It is basically the 50 Lux ASPH with one more stop, plus a bit. For this reason, and because of the price and size, it leaves me a little cold. The difference between f/0.95 and f/1.4 is there, but it is often not huge. You would have to go looking for things to shoot to maximize the difference.

The old Noctilux (well, the f/1 version) I love wide open. It is problematic, has sometimes nutsy boke, some visible CA, and so on, but it also has a deep charm. Somehow, it is my 50 Sonnar, except that I only accept it in the Noctilux because it goes to f/1 and has sometimes the creamiest boke of any lens I have seen, apart from the 75 Lux, which is very similar. The Noctilux is a real problem-child. I would like to own one, but it will have to wait a while, at least until I get an M10.

I know what you mean with Canon glass, and agree. Nikon glass is sometimes better, sometimes not as good, but on the whole, it suffers a similar problem to Canon glass, it is just missing a bit of character. It generally has less CA though, in the top lenses, and the bodies are much nicer, IMO.

Do you have any ZE glass? This might be able to renew your interest in your existing camera. Try the 100MP if you are a tele guy, the 21 Distagon if you are a wide angle guy.

50 1.0 Noctilux with B+W ND filter on Leica M3/M7/MP 160 ASA film

I have been watching this thread for sometime wanting to get in on the fun.
But, I still shoot film .
Should I start a new thread for Leica Film images?

nice film photos Gregory.

We had another film user in this thread some pages ago and he move to a general film thread instead, you should look that up I guess.

Gregory, very nice shots! IMO I don't we should differentiate from film users, as we are using the same M mount lenses. It would great to add another dimension to this thread

Another shot from this morning with the 50 Lux

Charles, that is just awesome!

More 75 1.8 Heliar shots:

wide open:

f/3.5 (notice CA on chain)

f/2.5

f/5.6

f/2 (CA all over sign)

Ron....when I get home tonight I will see if I didn't delete all the shots that I got frustrated with. The CA occurs in the focus area and is not easily corrected (not able to be corrected in LR3).

haha very true.

I would like to own one, but it will have to wait a while, at least until I get an M10.

Only problem is that they will probably be going for $7-8k then instead of the $5k that they are going for now. Damn Leica lenses increasing in price. I wish I had gotten into Leica about 2 years before I did - I could have picked up my lenses for probably half the price.

I agree with you about the 50/0.95. Amazing optical feat. I'd love to have one, without paying for it of course. But it's too close the the 50 ASPH, too expensive and too big for just an extra stop.

The old Noctilux is interesting, but for the price it goes for, just not for me. I might have thought about getting one for around $2k, but the prices are just silly now. I just got a 75 Summilux - I figure that will be my old school Leica, fast, 'character' lens.

On the topic of Canon/Nikon lenses, I don't have a huge opinion on the newer stuff for the most part, but some of the old Canon and Nikkor lenses for Leica screw mount (LTM) can be very interesting and pretty affordable. The old Nikkor 50/1.4 is a really cool lens, tons of character wide open and very sharp stopped down a bit. There are also some very cool Leica LTM lenses that have very distinct looks if you are interested...

Thanks Ryan. I went to the M8 gallery on your website and figured out how to view the images at full rez, which was informative. It seems the 75 f/1.8 lives up to it's billing by CV as slightly soft and smooth wide open and might work very well as a portrait lens considering that it's not bitingly sharp. The CA seems to be what is pretty common with fast glass and digital cameras, similar to what I'm used to seeing from the 50L and 85L. I'm not sure it's a deal breaker for me, so will have to try the lens to be sure.

I guess with the 75 Cron being an APO lens this wouldn't be a problem, and from what I recall, hasn't been mentioned by Luka. How about the 75 Lux Charles? Any major CA issues with it? Realistically, other than this CV lens, I'm probably looking at the 75 Summarit..

Charles, fantastic portraits! I especially like the B/W 50 Lux shot.

Ryan, nice shots with the Heliar. I especially like the bicycle sign and the bokeh.

Nice shots Gregory - excellent colors. I would have not guessed it's film. Technically speaking this is a thread for M8/M9/X1 cameras but I personally would not mind some film shots

Interesting. I expected you'd like the old Noctilux and it has a fairly wild rendering, so that's why I asked. I would not agree with you on the new Nocti being similar to the 50 Lux. I say this simply based on that I've seen very few 0.95 samples where I have not liked the rendering and very few 50 Lux samples where I've liked the rendering. B/W shots are an exception where I often like the rendering of the 50 Lux. The main and very important difference between the two is how the DOF falloff is handled (sharpness-to-blur transition). The Nocti at f/0.95 and Lux at f/1.4 have completely different transitions with the nocti having a longer, more gradual drop off to blur whereas the Lux has a very sharp transition.

Speaking of lenses that I like and don't like, there is one lens currently in my lineup that I'm suspicious of. I have thought on numerous occasions that I don't like it but when I've tried to find pictures to confirm it, I have not been able to substantiate it. I have gone over some older shots and made some conclusions

First we have performance at infinity:

Not bad, I'm happy with it. Nice color separation, high local contrast, sharp etc I don't like my 35/2 ZE at infinity but the ZM is quite alright.

Medium distance:

Again, not bad. Nice DOF falloff. Somewhat too smudged corners relative to the out of foucs blur, but nothing too dramatic. No weird field curvature or anything like that and zero distortion.

Close up:

Ugh, awful. I don't like the sharp edges around the bokeh blobs, the lack of good color separation in the OOF areas and the spherical aberrations.

Close up, but not as close as the previous one:

Hmm. Passable. I like the DOF transition but not the bokeh. I think this is as close as one should get with this lens.

At MFD:

Umm, well, perhaps as a substitute for taking psychadelic drugs. The only thing done to the image apart from resize is an increase in contrast.

So my conclusion so far is that I generally like the lens except for close ups where I hate it. When I get some time I'll do a full 35mm lens comparison. I have four 35mm lenses so it should be interesting.

At one point, either at l-camera-forum or getdpi, there was a comparison thread where some kind soul shot the Noctilux (I think the new one) and the 50/1.4 ASPH together. It was interesting to see the results. One of the photos was an open book on a book stand (I seem to recall it looked vaguely churc-like, but I could be wrong).

Again, on one of those two sites, there was also an interesting comparison between the two Noctiluxes. The difference in sharpness was impressive.

I searched for the first comparison but couldn't find it.
