Gary, I like the color version more. The blues add to the wintery feeling. My inclination would be to make the B&W a lot more moody. Right now it feels kind of tame with a lot of delicate mid tones.

The house is WWII era and is a sieve in respect to insulation. The windows are quite old and you should see the icicles hanging from the gutters.

I'd guess the storm windows were installed in the 70s, but the interior wood ones look to be original.

Burr! Sounds chilly, but we live in a 100+ y/o house that leaks badly too so I can't talk much

We moved here in 2009, and the first winter, we had Huge icicles hanging off the roof. A few days later, a new roof was completed and we were tapped out even more. Pretty, but boy can they be destructive.

Btw, I'm off to shoot Lake Michigan shoreline tomorrow in the bitter cold, as there's some really cool ice formations and if I'm lucky, these 'mini volcanos'. Should be fun.

Hi Ron, have you tried the Sirui tripod? From what I remember it folds to 14", extends to 1.4m and weighs less than 1kg. Its so compact compared to most other traveller tripods and the carbon fibre version costs less than 200. It's nicer than the manfrotto be free when I tried it

I've gotten by with an ancient, really heavy aluminum Manfrotto 055, for many years, so am hoping something smaller and lighter will help inspire me to actually take a...Show more →

Okay can't resist posting this picture as well. This is the only cat picture I've even made. A French photojurnalist told me that out of the (many) photo books published each year in France, some 50% are cat pictures. This is also the M9-P and the Summilux-50 pre-ASPH.

Hi guys - Nice images..

I've had some major drama with Leica service/warranty/repairs. These guys really need to reevaluate the term "professional" in conjunction with their brand. So annoyed with them the whole of last week. Almost wanted to sell everything off out of frustration.

Anyway, Ron I'd like to hear how the tripod works out for you. I ordered all the RRS tripods that interested me. I set them up in my house and held them in my hands etc. AND I've figured out what I'll be keeping.
For my bigger tripod it'll be the TVC-23 + BH-55 ballhead. This is the perfect hight for shooting female models. I also added the centre column incase I needed that little extra reach (male models, etc). I won't keep it on the tripod, but will have it on hand when I think I might need it. It's pretty solid, and the BH-55 is a much better ballhead choice then the BH-40. AND despite what I initially thought, the BH-55 looks really good on the TVC-23.

I'm still tossed as to if the TQC-14 + BH-30 is worth keeping. In the past, Iv'e gotten good use out of "travel" class tripods, due to all the short trips I make. But now that the M240 is pretty much the only camera I bring on trips, the tripod seems less necessary, unless I wanna do a longer exposures specifically. The thing is, it's a good tripod for the M240 but it's a simple yes or no at the end of the day, as I'm pretty fixed on the above mentioned kit.

For a M240 anything over a travel tripod is overkill. I've successfully used the gitzo traveler with a D700+14-24 2.8G lens. It was fine for long exposures in mild to semi-heavy wind. And have used it with the M240 in pretty decent winds without issues (not even weighted). Most people say the TQC-14 seems a marginally better to a lot better then the gitzo traveler.

Anyway keep us posted. BTW, you didn't buy the Leica version or the regular version?

Just to add: Sirui and Benro may have come a long way since I tried.. But the Benro I bought was a disaster, and my friend's Sirui wasn't much better.

Adam, I assume your problems were with Singapore service center? Indeed these are very unprofessional and since their are contracted by leica, they are there to make a profit and will always try to squeeze money from the client even for under warranty items.

First impressions is that there is significant VF blockage, focusing ring and build quality are much above ZM standard quality. Wide open there is some loCA and purple fringing but sharpness and contrast are top notch. It seems to be clinical though like most modern designs. More to come in the next few days.

I didn't get the chance to shoot today. I've got only 2 shots from this evening (both at 1.4):

I noticed it is very easy to nail focus wide open, partly thanks to the super smooth well dampened focusing action. The rendering is very clinical, very modern, I'm not used to such clean rendering so I'm a bit hesitant whether I like it or not. The VF blockage is a real problem. About 20% of the VF is blocked, and you can only guess what is there. I didn't take any comparison shots, but I feel that wide open, it is roughly equivalent to f/2.8 on the 35/2 biogon in IQ terms. I will need more time with it to see how I like it.

No hood. The blockage is already severe without one. I don't think it needs a hood anyway, it doesn't seem to flare at all. However, for some reason, I have already placed my finger in the middle of the front element twice (it has a funny concave front element that is invisible from many angles), I need to find a way to stop doing that

Wow, congrats Edward! Glad to read that operability doesn't seem to have changed any compared to the preproduction lenses Zeiss had at PPE last year. My impression then was also that the lens had a better feel than my other ZMs, particularly the very smooth focus. Also glad that you're finding wide open focus to be accurate with your M!

Regarding viewfinder blockage - it is a factor in this lens, but also with others, including a number of Leicas. My workaround is generally to shoot with my right eye to the viewfinder and keep my left eye open. The left eye's peripheral vision will somewhat fill in the blocked view of the right eye. But of course, it's not a perfect solution, nor a good one if you're a left-eye shooter.

Looking at your images, I'm also a bit on the fence about the background rendering in these situations. I suspect I will like it better in situations where backgrounds are less busy with specular light sources not considerably de-focused. It's probable that the 35 Sonnar in the RX1 remains unmatched. Otherwise, as you stated, in the plane of focus it looks modern and clinical.

Rocky/Adam - I may still consider a Sirui travel pod. We'll see how it goes with the FLM. The model I got is the CP30-M4S, which packs at about 47cm/18". I'm also getting one of their monopods and when discussing this with the distributor, because I needed the monopod to fit inside a Pelican 1510, after he physically measured the monopod, it was slightly shorter than the stated specs. Therefore, there may be a chance the tripod is slightly shorter, too. ~18" may be good enough for my needs, though its girth may be more relevant to how bulky it feels while out wandering around. It would have been a lot easier to make a decision by looking at these in a shop, but the local options just aren't many. The Leica Travel Tripod is the same specs as the FLM CP26-S3S. Interestingly, at $500 US, it's very competitively priced with FLM's USD pricing. In other words, there doesn't seem to be an insane Leica markup for the rebranding.

Thank you Ron! I too agree about the wide open background blur. It is not the buttery smooth Leica kind, but a much better rendering than the biogon 35/2. I find it incredibly defined for a 1.4 lens. The signs across the street are still readable in the 1st shot. I suspect the blur gets smoother slightly stopped down though. I will keep on shooting with it for a few days and posting the results here.

drawing style looks quite similar to the c/y 35/1.4 but sharper to the edges. bokeh in particular looks similar.
