The two problems I had with the Einstein were as follows;
1) The reflector and modifier attachment mechanism jammed i the first Einstein I received. (unit number #0007) the second Einstein didn't have this problem and PCB, inc sent me a replacement mechanism which I replaced myself (reason for me opening up the head in the first place to look at it's guts.)
2) I also reported that I wish the fan was quieter -- but that was quieter than other fan cooled heads I've worked with over the past 26 years (those noisy brands include Speedotron Blackline, Balcar, Norman LH2400 with auxiliary fan, & the PCB Zeus. The quietest heads I've worked with are the Profoto heads for the Pro 5, 6, & & 7 and Broncolor Pulso. )
3) I also reported that To see how the Einstein hold up under heavy usage, I ran two tests on several consecutive days, triggering the unit once every 5 seconds at full power with a Pocketwizard MultiMAX transceiver in intervalometer mode. The first test ran for 1,200 cycles, thesecond 1,800 cycles. Except an occasional 30-second break when the Einstein’s thermal protection circuitry kicked in, there were no problems. If you find the thermal
protection feature too aggressive or too conservative, it’s also user programmable.
Those are the problems I ran into and I reported on them. My conclusion was a s follows:
If you like the feel and look of Profoto equipment (and Profoto’s excellent light
modifier attachment system), you might not be as happy with the Einstein. But with the
ever-expanding lineup of Paul C. Buff-made light modifiers as well as those from other
companies like Chimera and Balcar, you just aren’t going to find this much control over
lighting—the principle photographic element —for a price anywhere near the Einstein’s. I
look forward to exploring its features more fully in the coming months.
My review was written in mid May 2010. I stand by that conclusion. Since acquiring the Einsteins I've used them on several corporate, editorial, and stock shoots, and I'm still a happy user. If they didn't work, or worked as badly as you continually say they do -- even thug hby your own admission you've never touched one, much less used one, I wouldn't still be using them as I've got other lights, Dynalites primarily, but also a Zeus system, and also have easy access to Broncolor, Elinchrom, Hensel, Speedotron Blackline, & Profoto moonlights and pack and head systems.
I'm also not sure why anybody who doesn't already have a collection of standard Elinchrom softboxes needs your adapter i the first place as equally good if not better softboxes are available from both Plume, ltd and Chimera.
