I could not compare to others as this is my very first OM lens I bought. However I can say I really like the focal length and f2 aperture, size and weight of the little lens and the rarity that makes it expensive.

it's the rarity and the fact that mike johnston recommended it that lead to the high price. that isn't to say it isn't better than the 50/1.8, i have no idea, i'm not willing to pay the premium to find out.

Perhaps not so much better than the 50/1.8 or could be even worse.
I almost ended up with Zeiss 40mm f2.8 but found this little gem at affordable price, so why not, pick this up

indeed, i like the 40mm focal length better than 50mm anyway and the 50/1.8 is actually a very nice optic despite it's bargain basement price. so if it just performs comparably to the 50/1.8 i'd be happy to have it, except that i can't find one for under $600!

Those prices are crazy. The 50mm f/1.4(!) can be found for ~$80.

I've read somewhere that the Voigt is as good as the Zuiko 40mm f2 and cheaper alternative so you might like to look into that. I got this lens as I do like to try this focal length and I do prefer 40mm to 50mm. It is just right FOV
Well mine is mint and came with skylight filter and hood as standard and at $520, if you look at the latest alt purchase thread there is a picture of my gem there
Neither knocking the Voigt, nor praising the Zuiko ... but drawing styles between these two mfr's are typically NOT a SUBTLE difference ... always hard for me to simply equate glass between mfr's glass without keying in on drawing style. I've never shot pancake glass, so that might bring them closer together in drawing style than I would otherwise anticipate.
