No, not at all. But it does affect the metering.

I'm only using MF lenses on my D700 and sure it's not easy all of the time. But I think it's well worth it with all the great glass you can get for close to nothing.

Excellent, thank you! Do you think the split screen is the easiest to use with mf lenses?

Hmmm...I just read that I would lose spot and evaluative metering and I love evaluative...that's kind of a bummer.

Somewhat off topic, will the Rokinon af confirm with a D1X? I seem to recall having an old manual lens on either a d50 or d1 that would af confirm even though there were no comm pins...am I crazy?

Really liking mine so far. Gotta get used to manual focus but it definitely works great.

It should give you the confirmation dot with the D1x/D1h.

Woot! Thanks for the response. Mine should be here in a few days.

Anyone have any samples wide open on extension tubes or bellows ? , wondering how it would work for macro?

For anyone who has shot both this lens and the Nikkor, how does the CA compare between them? I had another lens that was great except for the CA in high contrast situations and that drove me nuts, of course if the Nikkor exhibits similar CA then it isn't a huge downside of this lens. At the same time I'm not completely sure if the CA drove me hundreds of dollars nuts (or maybe it's easily fixable in post and I just need to learn how to do that better?) but still would be nice to know the comparison...

I can't compare it to the Nikkor, but I would say it's noticeably better than the Canon 100/2 and 85/1.8, not tons, but noticeable. I can't really complain about this lens, I'm happy with it.

I use a step up ring to 77mm with a polarizer. Is there any hood that will work over the step up ring? Do I need to get a screw in 77mm hood?

Ive just got my samyang yesterday, and on my copy the ring is a little bit stiff. Im surprised by that since ive heard that it was well damped and easy to rotate. But its not really a problem, i will get used to it.

The main thing that bothers me is, that the aperture ring is very close to the camera and small which makes it difficult to change aperture quickly. But again, ill get used to it.

But these are just small issues, im actually very impressed by the quality of this lens. Ive had both nikon 1.4 and 1.8 and this is at least as good as the 1.4. Build is on par and so is sharpness and bokeh.

I have the rokinon flavor...

it is a very sharp lens and the bokeh is on par with my sigma 50...

As others have stated, the aperture ring is VERY close to the body and somewhat hard to adjust because of that... the hood is a cheapy plastic hood, the cap is not center pinch (luckily i kept my generic center pinch caps from my canon days) and some of my lens rear caps dont fit snugly on the rear of the lens.

Otherwise, it actually feels VERY solid and sturdy.

not my best shot, but im too lazy

I just got mine on Wed. Took a few test shots outside. I shot in pretty harsh conditions and this lens definitely handled CA much better than the Nikon 85 1.4 AF-D did. I just sold that lens this week in favor of the Rokinon. The bokeh is fantastic. I bought this lens to shoot wide open so sharpness above 2.8 or so I could care less about as I have other lenses that will do the trick.

few random shots from the backyard......

So I'm assuming that if AF is not a concern, there's very little going for a nikon 85mm 1.8 over this lens? IQ flare handling are no contest?

Flare handling is quite good. It can be made to flare with a mid-day sun right outside of the frame but otherwise I've never noticed flare at all.
I've never used it without the hood, though. That said, the hood is chintzy in feel (but is totally solid) and the cap sucks. That's all there is to complain about vs. the Nikkors.

I need to stop looking at this. Makes me want to pick this lens up to try it out. I'm just not sure how good I am with MF. I've never MF before. I hear it's a lot easier to do on a D700 (which I have).

Flare....look at my pictures above...pointed directly at the sun with little to no flare....excellent control if you ask me

DO IT! For under $300 you can't go wrong. I thought I was bad at MF UNTIL I actually tried it . MF on the D700 is wonderful, very easy. I also have a D90, MF is not so much fun on that DX viewfinder...actually, none at all. I won't use MF lenses on the D90 unless I absolutely have to

Rsolti do you have the new UMC version or the older MC?

Because with my Samyang it's quite easy to get flare, especially without the hood.

I have to post this one....not the best shot (model wasn't cooperating ) but I wanted to show the sharpness wide open.......original shot UNTOUCHED with a 100% crop. Not sure why, but I can't miss focusing with this lens
