this thread seems to be in the know on this lens ! does anyone know how to tell the older vs. the newer lens production and the differenced between the two? im guessing its just metering report to the body
The newer model will mention "chipped" and the Rokinon lens looks different as well. It does not have the "Rokinon" gold badge, and will say "AE" and "UMC" on it.
wow... this may sound incredibly vain, but... i'm glad i got the cheaper version. if mine comes and is not chipped i will be happy because it doesn't have those atrociously ugly fonts printed on there. i understand saving cost by doing away with the gold plaque, but how hard would it be to pick a halfway decent looking font for the logos and designations in its place?
just an fyi from another thread about MF'ing lenses... I'm trying a magnifying viewfinder DK 17m (they're about 75 bucks or so) to see if it helps with MF. Seems promising so far. I can still see the info I need at the margins, too.

What body are you using the DK-17m with? I saw a old posting about modifying the D200/D300 with this... it didn't look too hard of a modification

FYI, I just bought a Nikon HN-20 hood on Ebay for $15, which is 72mm, metal/screw-in hood I'm going to replace the flimsy hood that came with the Vivitar version
It's a good match for this lens for those w/o step up rings
I just picked up the Vivitar version off fleebay. This thing is great! I was surprised with the build quality. The focus feels a bit stiff, but not uncomfortably so. So far it seems like I have plenty of throw to dial in focus. I've got a katzeye in the mail which I'm excited to test out with this guy.
Favorite lens of mine...I rarely ever swap for the 35mm 1.8.
Manual focus isn't even a problem, in my book and the bokeh is so creamy. shot at f2.8 at f1.8 (not completely wide open, but damn close ^_^)
actually, for the Rokinon, you must leave aperture at f/22 and it is controlled through the body. I have the chipped version, so I don't know if that applies to both.
