After looking all nice picture posts I got bitten by Leica bug. I am looking to buy 100/2.8 APO and do you know what would be reasonable price for mint lens? Any difference between 3-CAM lens and ROM for using it in NEX?

Thanks for your reply. In terms of optical quality will it be the same for ROM and 3-CAM?
From Puts' article on the 80-100 R's:
"The first version of the Apo-Macro-Elmarit-R 1:2.8/100mm used a mount with a double thread, later changed to a single thread, as the previous mechanism created a less smooth movement. (from serial number 3469285)"
But no optical changes. This is what he has to say about the optics:
"The optical qualities have not been surpassed to this date, although we have some others who are quite close in performance."
There are two non-APO versions of the 180/2.8, and this appears to be the second one, a much stronger lens than version I, but not nearly as sharp as the APO (nor nearly as expensive ).
carstenw is right, itīs the second version of Elmarit 180/2.8, my copy is VERY SHARP even on wider apertures, minimal or no visible CA, itīs better than 1. version which has "shorter" focusing ring and a tripod stand, version II doesnīt have it. APO 180/2.8 would be great but costs to much for me. APO 180/3.4 is better and focusing is easier and quicker to achieve focus than with non APO versions. If you can live with minimal f/3.4 instead of f/2.8 I īd buy APO 180/3.4, itīs "Made in Canada" only.
The 3.4 APO is fantastically sharp at large distances, as it was designed for the coast guard or something similar. Closer up it is normal sharp, but has less character. The 2.8 APO is the best, but hugely expensive.

Thanks freaklikeme and waterden. I check with ffordes and the serial is 3414435. I need to look for another one
Mine is just before the cross-over (3468...) and it's absolutely fine so I wouldn't get overly exercised by this.
