I don't know what performance you get out of either lens but having used both I know that I get more than twice the performance out of the lighter, closer-focussing, sharper, better bokeh, better tripod mount lens, measured in terms of photo sales.

The later 280/2.8 version, being part of the module system, is very expensive - especially if you want a head and a focusser - and it still doesn't reach the optical performance of the 280/4 (E Puts).
What do you guys think about the 1st version 400/2.8 APO vs. the modular version?
A senior photographer is offering me his 1st version 400/2.8 APO, he purchased new 10+ years ago but hardly use it. Another guy who sold me the 105-280 is also offering his modular 400/2.8 APO. I was thinking the new Canon 400/2.8, but its price tag is just rocket high.

Thanks, phuang3. Much appreciated.
I don't have any direct experience with the first version, but the modular with the 1x is spectacular from f/4-f/11. You'd be hard pressed to find a better 400 or 800 (the guy who loaned me his didn't have the 1.4x mod). And all of the mods can take the APO extenders as well, so it's pretty versatile. And the mods are cheaper than buying 500/600 and 800mm lenses. If the price makes sense to you, the mod is probably the way to go. IQ certainly won't be a concern. I've seen plenty of images with the first version that show it's great IQ, so I'd say you're faced with two good options.
